What the hell is up with nabisco??

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 10:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i've changed it to AAC, 224 kbps. might change to 320 but scared that those files might be too massive.

alan mentioned something about working from a new non-admin log-in - don't understand how to do this, how necessary is it from a security point of view?

lexpretend (lexpretend), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 11:11 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not nearly as necessary on Mac OS X as it is in windows as you wil get prompted for a password when anything wants to do anything low level. I'd turn off auto-login (system Preferences/Accounts/Login Items).

i import music to MP3 256 or 320, tho AAC 192 is roughly the equivalent of this as i understand it. i want all my tunes in the same format so reluctant to use AAC on that basis.

new itunes update totally sucks btw. i couldn't work out how to actually look at my ipod contents as per the old version.

Jon's fault. He hacked into Nabisco and changed him. ;-)

My old boss and I did a very nerdy test where we took Mp3 (Quicktime), AAC (Quicktime), Mp3 (LAME), ALAC, FLAC and uncompressed files, for control, of the same tracks and did a comparison. ALAC was the best but the difference when you dropped to AAC 320KBps was minimal (192 wasn't much below that but there was the tiniest hint of artefacting at the very high end and we needed so very high end headphones to hear it). LAME was better than QT for MP3 and Steve's equivalent rate is about right, except in cases with very high dynamic range.

how come? does this make anything easier? at some point i'm going to get traktor and start using that, are all the various formats compatible with it?

lexpretend (lexpretend), Tuesday, 13 February 2007 11:24 (seventeen years ago) link

AAC is fine in traKtor, IIRC.

no it's just me being anally retentive.

given that AAC offers equivalent/greater quality but at lesser filesize it does make sense to use it.
