I'm starting to feel that NYE is the most overrated of holidays, I mean why is it such a big deal?

It is so overrated. It is the holiday of the huge cover charge and crap line up. It hink I've only paid 1 cover charge in the last 8 years. Low key is the way to go, (although free passes to whatever sounds good too).

NYE in Japan is really nice. Quiet and reflective. Eat special food, watch pop singers on TV, and then go to a shine and throw coins over peoples' heads.

I will be in NY this year. Hopefully I can convince Carey's dog, Peter Jennings, to give me a kiss at midnight.

OMG did any of you in DC, none of whom seem to really be around today, see the ad in Express by the DOH for smoke free DC??? It's like a pile of douchebags, really explicitly!! Lobby dude bitching about his suit being smokey, girl with LNS super-flatted hair going on about how much she spent and now she won't have to have her expensive hair smell (uh do you not shower?), and best, a TOTALLY DRUNK LOOKING SORORITY TYPE bitching about respiratory problems (while talking to a man who, quite honestly, looks like cgi superimposed into the picture??). HAHAHAHA it is pretty much awesome.

Ah. Every time I come back to the US, I see these people in ALL bars and they've paid for expensive "grooming" which only emphasises a certain plasicity. Oh, and teh ugly they're trying to mask.

They're just kind of mind-blowing to me. They're the ones that complain the most about how they "reek of smoke" but they're definitely the first to consider it totally acceptable to go up to a stranger and bum smokes, sometimes multiples, because they "don't smoke but just this one time." So it cracks me up that they are the poster children for the smoke free DC ad.

Those "women" are two of the fugliest things I've ever seen. I didn't know it was possible to crossbreed humans with giraffes/shitzus.

does anyone know if Jaleo downtown does anything on NYE? The Crystal City outpost does, it seems.

NYE plans:

In general, fuck a new year. Amateur night. It's like an enormous company holiday party except without knowing anyone and having to pay for it.

That said, in DC cabs tend to be so fucked on NYE that I think the best plan is to pick a bar within walking distance of your house with a $20 or under cover and plan on walking home. For me this year it may end up being Bedrock Billiards.

Jaleo does something every year with a few seatings and flamenco dancers and that stuff. I think I randomly ended up at Jaleo last year at midnight, actually! But didn't get there until 11:45 or so. No ticket, no cover, it was great!

I am basically agreeing with your thesis but have friends in Laurel-ish area who want to come into city and do something. Within walking distance is key; we walked from Black Cat every year we did that, it was just too lame otherwise.

I'm thinking Jaleo would be perfect ie low key and fun but I can't see anything online for them. La Tasca is doing something for NYE but La Tasca, while ok, is not nearly as yummylicious as Jaleo. Though La Tasca's "pitchers" of sangria are more like "multiple gallons," huge plus in their favor.
