This is something I worry about.

2x. There are friend's bands that I genuinely enjoy going out to see, and there are others that I would never go to if they weren't my friends.

JordanC (JordanC), Friday, 23 February 2007 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, when you play with a pretty big band Of COURSE they are going to draw more than you do. So it's an honor to get to play with them and for their fans and show off the local talent.

Calico (calico), Friday, 23 February 2007 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess in general I feel like most of the responsibility for draw should be on the shoulders of the headlining band or whatever group put the show together.

Calico (calico), Friday, 23 February 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Thinking about it a little more, and wanting to clarify that I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect band members to promote jointly, or flyer, or poster, or take some resonsibility for the sheer grunt work of publicity & coverage, but it seems a little gross to expect you to marshall a roving band of personal acquaintences every time. That is all. :)

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 23 February 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I only go see your bands when I want to, and I want to see you play more often than I am actually able to. So there is a lot of FF/CST credit in my bank of band fandom.

That Guiliani for President of 9/11 article is hilarious.

Also, the new new ILX isn't dumb. Stop fearing change, you buncha panty waists.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh and MP is a ding dong.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought I was clipping my nails very subtley at my desk, but apparently not. The owner of the company just leaned his head of the conference room and was like, Hey, Sarah! Clip later! Sooo embarassing. And I am having such a good day too!

Calico (calico), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

It's kinda dumb! Having images turned off apparently means no hyperlinks to them, just a blank space? That is dumb.

JordanC (JordanC), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, so should we throw in the towel and move this to nulx? I'm fighting it, too, because so many features are missing and it's kind of a pain to use, but there's really no way to stop it.

Like Windows Vista.

PORNTIPSGUZZARDO (kenan), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not entirely sure it's possible to subtley clip your nails, but it is possible to subtley ask you to stop! Hmph.

xp then turn images on! Adapt or die, people!

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:05 (seventeen years ago) link

you're in a band with louis jagger?

It's not that. He doesn't "overshare" -- it's more that he just doesn't have a private, internal life.

I guess in general I feel like most of the responsibility for draw should be on the shoulders of the headlining band or whatever group put the show together.

Just to flip sides for a minute here, because I do think that draw is important, any time you're added to a bill it's because the club's booking dude expects that you will bring money into the club, either from ticket sales or drinks. If the headlining band is not capable of selling out the show on their own, then why would a club feel comfortable booking an opener that isn't capable of pulling in their share to make up for it?

The issue I have is not with the fact that we're expected to draw, because that's a reality for any band that wants to play good clubs in Chicago, it's more about how Matt expects us to approach it.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:07 (seventeen years ago) link

But I'm trying to minimize my bandwidth usage (and possibility of tits.jpg) at work!

JordanC (JordanC), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:07 (seventeen years ago) link

it's more that he just doesn't have a private, internal life.

Cf. how half of our songs are third-person narratives about other people.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Does he treat his other band this way?

danno martinez (danno martinez), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

He has another band??

JordanC (JordanC), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:16 (seventeen years ago) link

how does anyone who is not severely brain damaged not have a private, internal life?

PORNTIPSGUZZARDO (kenan), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the other band is not "his" band.

n/a (n/a), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not entirely sure it's possible to subtley clip your nails...
True, but I'm up here mostly alone (they are in another room) and I was clipping them under my desk into the trashcan.

any time you're added to a bill it's because the club's booking dude expects that you will bring money into the club, either from ticket sales or drinks
Dude, I know that. I just mean most of the responsibility should be on the headliner or at least the organization sponsoring the show. If the venue feels certain the headlining band will lead to a sold out show, which it did, why have any opener bands at all?

Calico (calico), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

That was a rhetorical question.

I'm just being defensive. I think once a club has asked you to play, they can't go off on you for not bringing in enough people. They can just not ask you to play again.

Calico (calico), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:29 (seventeen years ago) link

(boring band business talk ahead)

If he hasn't already, M really should read some books on marketing/management/PR or, otherwise, hire someone to do PR for you guys for three months. You guys need your own n3ptali for M to meet the goals he has set for the band. He's like the guy running a restaurant and handing out flyers on the street and is feeling down when the restaurant only fills up during Summer Block Party Days or when the extended family of someone who works there is in town -- and then wonders why restaurants that hire publicists and take out ads get attention. I wouldn't tell most bands this (and I'm not following this advice), but for his particular goals he needs to pay someone who has the experience of getting other bands to meet those goals (of having their own following). And I know you can't buy that, but you can buy the services of someone who knows how to reach an audience that will stay with you.

(And I keep saying, opening for buzz bands means drawing a crowd that follows publicity - fickle crowd. If M respects bands who, for the most part, bought their attention, then he has to do the same. Or, better yet, headline with local bands, play shows outside of the indie-business world, give other bands breaks before the have their own label/attention/whatever.)

If most of the band's friends are like me, they're more likely to see you headline than to see one of these "buzz band" shows. (I don't think I've been to a single one, other than the night we were both in Madison and I saw Devotchka.)

Same old story - he just needs to find an experienced and pragmatic manager instead of banging his head against the wall and blaming the band.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Sometimes the headliner is the headliner because they're a touring band and they have a bigger reputation, but the local band gets put in the middle slot because they're capable of drawing more within that city and thus can keep a crowd in the club for most of the night (some people come a little early for the first opener, some stay a little later for the headliner).

I think once a club has asked you to play, they can't go off on you for not bringing in enough people. They can just not ask you to play again.

Yeah, I think that's true. Did I indicate otherwise?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha, I'm already used to Nu-ILX faux-HTML.

Smartest thing yet said regarding this.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the other band is not "his" band.

Correct. He says he bites his tongue in that band a lot because it's not really his place to make decisions, but he has the comfort of knowing that he has another band where he can call the shots.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

M may have better luck with Canasta's "fan base" by sending out e-mails for shows touting "free pancakes" instead of "ooh ooh hot band indie label".

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I think that's true. Did I indicate otherwise?
I don't know. Probably not. Like I said, I'm just being defensive.

Yeah, I don't think that our fans care about that stuff as much as he thinks they do, no matter how many pull-quotes from Pitchfork he wants me to include in the e-mail announcements.

If you guys play a show on March 10th that's a potluck, I swear you will get many of your friends/fans. If the show is at the Ice Fac, this could actually happen.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. GEOGRAPHY MAN

I wonder what I can cook to bring to the show tonight? I have some leftover stir fry in the fridge.

There's an ancient popcorn machine always sitting around at Ronny's but I'd be afraid to actually use it.

Mr. Geography Man?!? That's a new one, but I'll take it over "Hey, Jerk".

Thanks guys!

If ILX had avatars, this could be Dan's:

Not bad, but I am pretty happy with my avatar on my other board and would probably use it here:

I keep meaning to Photoshop "GAS FACE" onto it.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

That said, I am glad there are no avatars here.

Last night I tried to remember the name of the main island of Japan and wasn't sure, so I had to look it up. I was right, it's Honshu.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:57 (seventeen years ago) link

How did "dickweed" originate?

I'm wondering if it went "dildo" --> "dillweed" (ordinary word that sounds like a humorous insult because it resembles "dildo") --> "dickweed" (a way to restore the original vulgarity).

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 February 2007 17:59 (seventeen years ago) link
