Cool yourself down, Poppa.

Actually, while Nick would bring the surefire roffles, perhaps it would be better to select jaymc from that particular cohort, as he would be more helpful in reconstructing the missing pieces of the fullblown ILX.

AND AGAIN!

Are these code issues, traffic issues or a combination?

I feel like I'm in that same pub that Simon and Ailsa are in on the aulde-ILX WDYLL thread, but I can't quite seem to find them.

Simon's under the table, cursing super-strong cider which he claims he hates but curiously can't seem to stop drinking.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

hic. DAMN YOU ... hic ... SUPER-STRONG ... hic ... bleeugh. you're all my besht mates.

the cider is all stet's fault. still, it makes a change from the time he forced me to drink double vodka and blue aftershock. or was it double blue aftershock and vodka? either way, i don't remember much about the next day. or the one after that.

grimly fiendish (simon), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Or black Sambuca. I blame your missus for that (even though I went back and bought more afterwards)

Drunks, all of you. (I love you.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 August 2006 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I like how Ned always softens his comments with declarations of love. (Actually, I'm starting to adopt this technique myself; the other day I told my friend Troy, who has lost a lot of weight, that I loved him, but he really should buy some pants that fit him...).

This is what I have learned from Ned. And ILX.

stevem, Wednesday, 23 August 2006 13:49 (seventeen years ago) link

For those interested (though maybe they won't thank me for calling this to general attention):

http://groups.google.com/group/ilxor

While subscription is closed at present, understandably so -- I'm not a member myself -- you can still read all the posts if you want to keep track. *VERY* technical, though, so unless you can stand that your eyes will glaze over. But suffice to say a number of good points have already been addressed which will help speed up the database/reduce bottlenecks/etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd still like it if one of teh illuminati would take a shot at my question. (Are these code issues, traffic issues or a combination?)

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 14:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not illuminati but I think the issue is a combniation of both. The code as it's written is not as efficient as the amount of traffic ilx generates needs it to be.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

OTM. The code as it stands uses the database for just about every page you see. That's ok when it's small, but i understand it's past 4gb, and the strain's showin.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Gotcha. So the code rewrite is to change our DB-access vehicle from a 4-cyl. Chevy ImpLOLa to a 12-cyl LMAOborghini. I guess one obvious question is, what if the best model available is a 6-cyl. vehicle? (I'm not doubting y'all's ability, just asking.)

I would just about get behind dumping the DB and starting fresh, and everybody could have 30 days or whatever to save their favorite threads. It would be interesting to start from scratch with basic topics like "Sex: C/D" with a mix of old-time ILXors (whose outlooks might have changed) and newcomers. But I know that's been brought up and pretty much discarded as a plan.

I Am Curious (George) (Slight Return) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

There was some talk of keeping old threads seperate and only injecting them into the live database when they were bumped, but that was purely top-of-the-head gas on my part and hasn't really been checked for feasibility.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

"Sex with a mix of old-time ILXors: C/D"

(since ken c isn't here, someone has to do the parody threads...)

Are you p3ring or wh3rding? I use wh3rd and it's been okay most of today.

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Thursday, 24 August 2006 14:35 (seventeen years ago) link

It's confusing:

poxy fule 1 = admin doing some admin thing (couple of minutes)
poxy fule 2 = too many people visiting the site (longer)
timeout = even more people trying to visit (hours on end)
other timeout = something else happens which can sometimes be solved by Andrew?

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 24 August 2006 15:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I was p3ring, but I couldn't get in with wh3rd either (assuming the other parts of the url are the same).

much_aldo_about_nothing (much_aldo_about_nothing), Friday, 25 August 2006 11:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I think you may have network/router problems Al. Happened to me before with BT connect where I could access some sites but not others.

ILX is mostly down at the moment so it's kind of hard to diagnose anything when you don't know if what you're trying to connect to is even available.

nu_onimo (nu_onimo), Friday, 25 August 2006 11:54 (seventeen years ago) link

See if you can ping the servers.

(type "ping ilx.p3r.net" and/or "ping ilx.wh3rd.net" from a command prompt)

try a tracert
