beyond banksy: 40 street artists we should know about

1. blek le rat

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3278/2972787608_3f65a8a311.jpg?v=0

Long before there was “street art” as we now know it, there was Blek le Rat. He was one of the first graffiti writers in Europe; one of the first people to use stencils to make public art on the street; one of the first—if not the first—to break away from the dominance of New York graffiti style; and one of the first to use icons instead of writing his name.

2. shepard fairey

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/75/AndreTheGiantSticker.gif

Fairey created the "André the Giant Has a Posse" sticker campaign in 1989, while attending the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). This later evolved into the "Obey Giant" campaign, which has grown via an international network of collaborators replicating Fairey's original designs.

3. swoon

http://swindlemagazine.com/images/swoon5.jpg

Countless artists take to the streets each day and integrate their imagery into the city landscape, but few have achieved the level of reverence and respect given to Brooklyn-based artist SWOON.

We would break into abandoned buildings in the South Bronx and cut large, geometrically shaped pieces out of walls and floors, opening up the spaces to be photographed.

"My work explores the emotional and physical struggle of growing up in an urban environment. Through hand-cut stencils and installations made from found materials I hope to inspire compassion for the often overlooked individuals of society."

"Fuelled by a sense of righteous indignation I also felt empowered by the expressive and creative outlet that street art afforded me. Instead of feeling like a helpless passenger on a train headed for disaster I felt that I had created a voice for myself amid the noise of the city."

*TUBS Memorial Mural Project*

- a temporary art intervention in a disused building.

*Opening April 26th *

*2 - 6pm***

*50th and **Roosevelt** Ave NE., in the University **District of Seattle**,
**WA***

Currently on view, Free Sheep Foundation is proud to host an exhibition
memorializing the forthcoming demolition of the former TUBS building in
Seattle’s U-District. Highlighting graffiti-style murals by over 20 artists
(please scroll down for list of artists) and window installations, FSF would
like to invite the public to view this artistic intervention with the same
heart as viewing cherry blossoms in Spring. This temporary project is meant
to serve as a beautiful display of color in the waning days of a building's
demise, as well as a re-interpretation of site and celebration of the City.
In partnership with the property owners, we offer this gift to the
neighborhood and the world, embracing our rapidly transforming urban
landscape.

Historical records of the site are available since 1905, when it was
developed as a residence and small commercial space. In 1923, the building
was redeveloped as a grocery store, eventually becoming the Big Bear Store,
then the Lucky Store, and in the early '60's, the P&C Serve U Grocery.
During this time, the site was also shared by a car dealership. In the
mid-70's, the building became renovated and housed The District Tavern (one
of the earliest rock music venues in Seattle) and Fotomat Drive-thru. In
1982, TUBS took over the building as its most recent tenant-to-date;
operating a spa with rental rooms of hot tubs and saunas, and offering
tanning and massage services. Soon the site will be developed into a 60 unit
apartment building with ground floor retail.
