If it's good enough for Farber, it's good enough for me.

Anyway, it's not like we're talking about Lynch here. This is pretty much artless Academy-bait here.

MR. FILM CRITIC (Eric H.), Monday, 27 November 2006 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

who are you

this is cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 November 2006 21:10 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, I'd stop Lost Highway frequently. I didn't know Manny F did that, but he IS 90 years old!

The novel Little Children ain't bad, but I'm not surprised Todd Field blew it up to Oscarbait.

I don't know where to read Mr. Film Critic these days.

FOOD & INTIMACY; twenty minutes from canadian televison. awesome.

Oh shit, forgot!!...

Hard Candy - I kind of loved this movie.

nklshs (nklshs), Monday, 27 November 2006 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

infernal affairs, post-'departed'. it doesn't hold up, too much musical interlude corny bullshit.

deep space nine (deep space nine), Monday, 27 November 2006 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Little Children and Half Nelson will both prob be in my top 10 this year, with the latter near the very top.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 November 2006 21:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I picked up Bringing Up Baby at Tower and it's not quite as good as I remembered (or My Cousin Vinny), but maybe it's just the ownership effect. Silver City did its predictable (though rapidly diminishing) Sayles sense-of-place thing on me, and Chris Cooper's Bush impression was tiresome for as long as I resisted compartmentalizing it (not too long), but Danny Huston was novel enough, the costumes ruled most movies, and the girls were pretty in a very uncinematic way.

nuneb (nuneb), Monday, 27 November 2006 22:30 (seventeen years ago) link

is little children actually good? it looks so beyond awful.

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Monday, 27 November 2006 22:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm a sucker for movies like that.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 November 2006 22:54 (seventeen years ago) link

speaking of beyond awful: my roommate brought home Lucky # Slevin. worth my time? worth my time....ON WEED?

grbchv! (gbx), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 00:49 (seventeen years ago) link

a good rule of thumb is to avoid any movie featuring josh hartnett.

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 01:08 (seventeen years ago) link

fuck those movies!

deep space nine (deep space nine), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

tho i'd probably take them over anything he's done post '99

deep space nine (deep space nine), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 01:14 (seventeen years ago) link

i'd take those movies over the da vinci code. which no one should ever have to watch. don't even start watching it and start ffwding and stopping and ffwding again to the main ian mckellan bit, which is okay b/c of him, and then ffwding again because there is nothing to ffwd to. i think it contributed to my crappy do-nothing mood of last week.

saw some good shorts at resfest on friday though (these were them - the thing about shorts is that even if they're great, they're not exactly well-advertised or well-distributed :( i guess youtube is helping though.

need to see 'the departed'

impermanent rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 01:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Amelie was pretty hot whilst threatening the albino, the only not-bad thing about it aside from McKellen.

But even the movie isn't as bad as the newish pre-movie commercials they're running where Ron Howard talks about all the deep, hidden symbols they introduced into the movie, illustrated by random flashes of gold accent. Apparently one of the airline logos was meant to help you unlock the mystery of Mary's cooch.

milo (milo), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 01:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Slevin is not beyond awful but it was not good either. imo.

Hopefully this will put an end for once and for all to this strange business about my being a film critic.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 02:10 (seventeen years ago) link

slevin is worth watching.

(x-post) (Although I did just write about crap Streisand Star Is Born and will soon add something about Maniac Cop and Disney's Robin Hood to the DVD section.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 02:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll give you Nelson, jmc, but the pool scene in Little Children was the last straw on that one.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 02:12 (seventeen years ago) link

The pool scene was masterful.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 06:24 (seventeen years ago) link

When it was a shark instead of a sex pervert and it wasn't a pool at all but a beach on Amity Island, maybe.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 06:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Having finished the other half of Nelson, my take on it miraculously didn't change from before. Who says piecemeal viewing distorts one's impression?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 08:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Too bad Gosling's long-"deserved" hype had to wait for a condescending liberal b.s. vehicle to be birthed (I'll stick with the Jewish Nazi movie & The Slaughter Rule).

I watched The Faculty a few months ago at my parents house, the description listed Clea Duvall and Josh Hartnett in the "starring" thing, it was a fairly pleasant shock to find Frodo Baggins, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart, Jean Grae, etc etc in it. A fun stupid movie!

nklshs (nklshs), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I enjoyed Lucky # Slevin in that it is probably the only time I will ever hear Morgan Freeman cuss.

my buddy is the quarterback in that.

i am in love with the departed.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 16:30 (seventeen years ago) link

What was condescending about Half Nelson?

Why does the presence of Jackie Earle Haley negate the brilliance of the setpiece in Little Children?

Can we change the thread title so as not to attract ILF cranks?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

for starters, the oh-so-gratuitous scene w/Gosling's family near end

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Gratuitous, maybe, but I didn't think it was heavy-handed, and I liked watching them all interact.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i am in love with the departed.

Jams, Altman or Betty Comden?

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

last night - Dawn of the Dead remake. not bad altho essentially a huge 28 Days Later ripoff. opening bit before the credits was grebt.

I cosign the Faculty too

dmr, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Why does the presence of Jackie Earle Haley negate the brilliance of the setpiece in Little Children?

He negates nothing because there is no brilliance in it to be negated. I'm sorry, jmc, but this is a definitively worthless movie.

Can we change the thread title so as not to attract ILF cranks?

I'm sorry, I'll try to be more respectful as per the standards of noize board.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Changing Times, which will probably make my top 10; Morbs OTM in claimin git's a better film about colonialism than Caché.

Nice to see the kid from Nico & Dani all grows up.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 28 November 2006 17:47 (seventeen years ago) link

The Faculty might have been the last movie where Hartnett appeared to be awake most of the time.

Just Watched:
Silent Hill (well, the first 45 minutes) - KIND OF REALLY BORING. Not enough fucked up monsters. Dyke cop in leather is hawt tho. Also apparently someone gets skinned at the end so I am going to have to finish this at some point.

Soon-to-arrive Netflix:
Curb Your Enthusiasm season 1 disc 1
Eyes Without a Face (YOU GUYS I AM SO EXCITED 4 THIS 1)

Watching tonight probably:
Gozu

Eyes Without a Face

This movie is a lot stranger and tamer than I expected ... until it was extremly not tame at all.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonster), Wednesday, 3 January 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

the gun / sex scene was total Lynch, looked straight outta Wild At Heart. v. weird movie.

yeah i watched that w/my parents when i was about 15. (we rented it on videodisc!) sex stuff majorly awkward. after the gun scene my mom was like, "um, you know that's not normal sex..." and i was all "DUH, mom!" (don't know what she was worried about, we didn't even own any guns.)

Just watch Silent Hill on fast-forward, stop whenever something happens that looks interesting. You don't need the dialogue.
