Belkin is being a wadi today. Trying to get a new Superpitcher track and the thing won't go. '953KB of 10.3MB'? That's not going to do any of us any favors.

if we were ranking wireless connections, belkin would still get a good score based on recent performance. anyone stands in the way of superpitcher, however, better know that rankings can plummet pretty quickly. maybe belkin should take a lesson from sway.

My advance guesses for best and worst:
-the Billy Corgan has got to be the worst, doesn't it? Depeche could come in a close second.
-I have high hopes for the Max Mohr. He was the guy who did that (amazing) first-to-last song on Superpitcher 'Today'. Or else the Villalobos. It's a new one.

i'm having doubts about that alex smoke song. it has all of the qualities, but i think the 'conversion / save the world' song is... even more.... let's please listen to it again tonight, and possibly keep hunting; smoke will guide us.

Bent's a something. More than a song. Perhaps a person. Hey, when you get home tonight could you go to the DJ Koze thread (ilm-find on this page-dj koze 'kosi comes around') and download the last track posted there? It'll take a while, and when the YSI page opens up you'll have to right click on the banner that drops down that says 'this file blocked from downloading'. When that drops down right click and choose to download. It's another Kompakt Total 6 track.
actually, Superpitcher and Ada will be playing together in Seattle in the Fall. Date not made public yet but it IS HAPPENING! Annie with live band + others not fully confirmed yet.

-- biz (b...), July 27th, 2005.

How about that?

I'll do some searching on the bus today for the 'conversion/save the world' song.

We played last night!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So if this were an email the subject line would be, 'Lucky 13 reconstructed' or 'Lucky 13, The Day After.'
Here we go. I'm going to see what I can remember, then, while not rating them, mark the best, worst, and most mediocre.

I also have the playlist from last night to help. And the songs again, to remind me.

X-Press 2 ft. David Byrne, 'Lazy'

I liked this, it banged in a funky housy way that can sometimes bug me, but the addition of mr. Byrne's vocals made it all the better. I hadn't drank enough at this point to be into it, but I like it, thinking back.

Avenue D, 'Do I Look Like A Slut?'

Saying 'shut up' in a song doesn't really work, you know? Good music, like you pointed out, and a couple of great lines, too. I hold out hope for Avenue D. Faulting someone for being 'too trashy' when their whole deal is predicated on trashy seems a little weak, so I will refrain.

Joakim, 'R U A Vergtarian?'

The first of our minimal(ish) house tracks, and will be therefore hard to keep them seperate, but a good beat and nice movement and non-fucked-up vocals, for once.

Robyn, 'Konichiwa Bitches'

We touched on this one. It's got some moments, but the sub-MIAisms seem like they'll hold Robyn back, and of course the beats are weaker. And we all know there's no excuse for that. Find Diplo!

The American Analog Set, 'Born On The Cusp'

Such sweetness. Back to 'know by heart' territory. This could be a great great record. I got the rest of it today.

Sol Polloi, '12th Street Rag'

From the Hawaiin Guitar Greats vol. 1. What great interlude music. Maybe between every third Komapkt track we should throw in one of these. Makes the hot side hotter and the cool side cooler.

Iron and Wine/Calexico, 'Red Dust'

I won't steal your comment, but instead say 1. this is bad. 2. it sounds more like Beam's swampiness than Calex's dustiness. Dustiness is better. 3. I think I'm sick of Beam's voice. It isn't his fault. I just am. 4. This is bad but it does rock a little.

Cerberus Shoal, 'The Land We All Believe In'

See, that's a song title. And so therefore (obviously) the song should be great. But it's not. They have a tendency to go over the top with their vocals, and sometimes it works. This time it didn't. Oh yeah and some sub-Tom-Waitsisms, instrumentally speaking. We did not make it through the whole song.

Tom Vek, 'I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes'

This was fun because it was so different than everything before. Plus that DFA-style insistence, a focus on the groove, a decent substitute for the Rapture. I liked this, though it's hard to imagine listening to a full album of it. Did you say Sting on the vocals? It's making me think of some 90s punky vocalist, like...mm. Right, that fucking Offspring guy. Dexter what'shisfuck? Maybe I can't listen to this again.

9 down 4 to go.

The MFA, 'Rinse Time'

The song we thought would cut off but didn't. Nice bouncy house, a little more up than i like, but the MFA do a lot of things right, no?

Django Reinhart, 'Oriental Shuffle'

I am very offended that he used the word 'Oriental' in this. From now on I'll call it 'Asian Shuffle'. Nice interlude again. SEE SWEET AND LOWDOWN MORE.

Justus Kohnke, 'Krieg'

Justus, I love you. You do everything right. Even when I think you've gone off the rails 2/3 of the way into the song, you always bring that shit back around. And for that I salute you.

Booka Shade, 'Triple Identity'

Hot track. Damn. I like how it fit with the Kompakt Total 6 stuff we listened to above but felt decidedly different. Makes me want to buy 12"s and learn how to DJ.

Oh hell that's 13 and we listened to many more than that. Well.

okay, trickster, here's what i have to say:
X-Press 2 ft. David Byrne, 'Lazy'

I liked this, it banged in a funky housy way that can sometimes bug me, but the addition of mr. Byrne's vocals made it all the better. I hadn't drank enough at this point to be into it, but I like it, thinking back.

>> i liked it too; what i love about david byrne is that he's always seeking out new opportunities and seems to have no style limitations... he'll try anything. his voice was matched well with the music. (i sound like an iron chef panelist. that's a good thing, right?)

Avenue D, 'Do I Look Like A Slut?'

Saying 'shut up' in a song doesn't really work, you know? Good music, like you pointed out, and a couple of great lines, too. I hold out hope for Avenue D. Faulting someone for being 'too trashy' when their whole deal is predicated on trashy seems a little weak, so I will refrain.

>> o avenue d, i love you. please try, though, to be a bit less repetitive next time. and jergins, you are otm re. "shut up."

Joakim, 'R U A Vergtarian?'

The first of our minimal(ish) house tracks, and will be therefore hard to keep them seperate, but a good beat and nice movement and non-fucked-up vocals, for once.

>> i don't have any specific recollection of this one beyond knowing that i liked it.

Robyn, 'Konichiwa Bitches'

We touched on this one. It's got some moments, but the sub-MIAisms seem like they'll hold Robyn back, and of course the beats are weaker. And we all know there's no excuse for that. Find Diplo!

>> kinda cute but yeah, weak. i see potential if she can find her own thing and, as you say, find her diplo.

The American Analog Set, 'Born On The Cusp'

Such sweetness. Back to 'know by heart' territory. This could be a great great record. I got the rest of it today.

>> serious sweetness. so glad there's more, and that they've gone that direction again. we should get some amanset to kira (and thanks for talking me through that last night, by the way).

Sol Polloi, '12th Street Rag'

From the Hawaiin Guitar Greats vol. 1. What great interlude music. Maybe between every third Komapkt track we should throw in one of these. Makes the hot side hotter and the cool side cooler.

>> this was the surprise of the night. isn't it great how very different genres of music can blend and meet and make so much sense in the context of one another? it's a sum of the parts thing. perfect!

Iron and Wine/Calexico, 'Red Dust'

I won't steal your comment, but instead say 1. this is bad. 2. it sounds more like Beam's swampiness than Calex's dustiness. Dustiness is better. 3. I think I'm sick of Beam's voice. It isn't his fault. I just am. 4. This is bad but it does rock a little.

>> i wish you had stolen my comment because i don't remember it. i'm sure it was smart and pithy, though. this song rather annoyed me. because it sucks when something that should be great is not even good. this is the antithesis of the sum of the parts thing.

We did not make it through the whole song.

>> couldn't get over that voice. of course. i'm glad we moved on early.

Maybe I can't listen to this again.

>> vek? what is that? anyway, yeah, sting covering the cure mixed by... someone. music was okay but the singing was tedious. again. i feel fortunate that i have completely obliterated the sound of the offspring from my memory.

9 down 4 to go.

The MFA, 'Rinse Time'

The song we thought would cut off but didn't. Nice bouncy house, a little more up than i like, but the MFA do a lot of things right, no?

>> yeah this was a good'n. thinking it was going to cut off kept me from focusing on it or investing much in it, though, so i'd like to hear it again. i remember we talked a lot during the song so maybe its best potential is for background music. the mfa, they do good work. keepers.

Django Reinhart, 'Oriental Shuffle'

I am very offended that he used the word 'Oriental' in this. From now on I'll call it 'Asian Shuffle'. Nice interlude again. SEE SWEET AND LOWDOWN MORE.

>> oh so suddenly you're... never mind. i was trying to play off that bit in 'arrested development' but as usual i can't remember how it went. this was a great track, though. good call, jax.

Justus Kohnke, 'Krieg'

Justus, I love you. You do everything right. Even when I think you've gone off the rails 2/3 of the way into the song, you always bring that shit back around. And for that I salute you.

>> justus is a man of talent and wisdom. i want to marry him. (would make moving to germany a lot easier, wouldn't it?) i couldn't be gladder to have some new justus. he does not go wrong ever, even when his lyrics are totally over the top. doesn't take himself to too seriously is what that says to me.

Booka Shade, 'Triple Identity'

Hot track. Damn. I like how it fit with the Kompakt Total 6 stuff we listened to above but felt decidedly different. Makes me want to buy 12"s and learn how to DJ.

>> yes. and yes. and yes.

what would carrie and john and rion think of lucky 13?
we should play this new version:

"Tricky Random Lucky 13 with Special Guests"

put the green ipod on random and draw the guests out, urging them to talk about music in general and specifically about the songs being played. record their thoughts and reactions here.

we're pretty much guaranteed to get a good and interesting array in 13 random songs -- i predict we get for sure a baile funk, some ghana soundz (since my ipod is in love with ghana soundz), a couple of german minimal tracks, the mountain goats, a pop song or two, and... who knows what other completely random randomness. probably that would be the time the random would choose to play a dj set for the first time ever.)

what you think?

LSten, welcome. It's as easy as:
1. get/find 13 songs you've never heard before.
2. listen to them once and score them 0-10.
3. post your results here!

You can do the same ones we've done (I could make you a tape/burn you a CD) or find your own. We've got a Woods-centric one coming up this weekend that you might find amenable.

speaking of the mountain goats, john darnielle said this on 7/29/5:
"By the way, the best album released so far this year is still The Foundation by the Geto Boys. Like, by about a country mile. Nobody else in rap working anywhere near this level. Just so you know."

do you know them?

what do you think about a Lucky 13 assembly of songs / artists recommended by j.d.?

-- lxy (lxy), Monday, September 12, 2005 11:25 AM (2 years ago) Bookmark Link

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, we could do some form of recommendations. With j.d. it would be a lot of metal, though, i think. I was also wondering if we could do a lucky 13 with Annie's new DJ Kicks. That might be fun, or the songs might be too short.

Lucky 13 for 9.18.2005
LD#1
This is the first time I haven't looked over the list before, instead writing them down as I went. I also couldn't sit still.

Don't Make Me Wait (original 12" dub mix).....Peech Boys.....6

2005: the year of great instrumental tracks and crappy vocals. I can at times fall for the sub-Prince thing, but I didn't here.

Great Waves............Dirty Three............8

As she mellows, Chan Marshall's voice reminds me more and more of Edie Brickell. But I still like her.

Heads High............Mr. Vegas............3

Not offensively bad, but really, not at all good. Repetitivetitive.

Hush Hush Tip..........'N Tyce..............4

that baby voice, combined with sucky lyrics, doesn't do it for me. I liked the piano line, the way it sounded like jazzy hiphop from 10-12 years ago.

I Want None of This...........Radiohead...........6.5

Does this one have the same speed/sound/vibe as 'Life In A Glass House'? That was my first impression. The Radiohead ideal, with the quotes about 'always moving forward, not wanting to sound like we used to' starts to sound a little suspicious this many years later, with this traditional of a song. Also, is there a limit on the # of songs that can hit the 'moving' nerve, the cry reflex, from a single artist/band? I fear Radiohead may have used them all up.

jah...........M.A.N.D.Y..............6

Not the greatest MANDY track, but thank god for a beat, finally. How many times have i said, 'this song makes me want to smoke pot'? So I did, and the rest were the stony 7, just for the public record.

good sounds, occasionally overwrought, nice breakdown, difficult ending, a little harsh....a six.

La Pollera Colora (Michael Mayer Mix).....Gonzalo Martinez.........8

Here we go. Great beat layering. Loved the depth of the beats and the latin feeel. A little long and repetetive, with the end losing momentum.

Maps............Arcade Fire.........DNQ, for me

I couldn't give it a score. Yeah, we've done cover songs before, but never one I've known this well, two different ways (Ada). I liked it, though.

Mifune (Martin Landsky Remix).........Sunsetpeople........6

This one was more relentless than our other electronic tracks, verging on being too fast. It also lacked the sweep other the other get physicals (Mandy, Booka, Chelonis).

That said, I liked the 'up' sound: 30 degrees, fast decay, every two seconds.

Phantom Broadcast..........The Go! Team............6.5

There's always an adjustment period when the Go Team come up on a mix, isn't there? It's a jolt, sound-quality wise.

Well, they've discovered their American roots. Good title too. Short though.

Smiling Off (Luomo Remix)........Black Dice...........7

very smooth start. I figure you hated the vocal but I didn't mind, at least for most of the track, its otherworldliness, its repetition and fade. The move to harshness and back is beguiling. Great breakdown, many brilliant moments, a bit too long....seven.

They Wanna Know (Whisper edit/refix mix).....Mr Lee G & Ghislain Poirier.........9.5

OH HOLY SHIT! It's the whisper song as i always knew it could be. Wow.

washing up...........Tomas Andersson.........6

that analog keyboard is really in attack mode. What is it about the songs that annoy the hell out of you and make you dance at the same time?

Lucky 13 for 9.19.5 LD#1
Don't Make Me Wait (original 12" dub mix)....Peech Boys....6

the music is a plus ("clapping" and bass); i have mixed feelings about the voice, and the piano is a minus.

Great Waves....Dirty Three....6

i like the ringing warmth of the tune, but her voice reminds me of someone i can't name, and seems outdated.

Heads High....Mr. Vegas....5

i like the 50's quality of the voice, but this song is not interesting enough to be so repetitive.

Hush Hush Tip....'N Tyce....7

this is a good serious groove contrasted with a good rap (all plusses), but her voice is pretty grating.

I Want None of This....Radiohead....6

the harmonies are nice but this is disappointing in that it doesn't seem like a progression from amnesiac.

jah....M.A.N.D.Y.....6

there's something going on that i like (nice, warm undercurrents; good changes) but i don't like the sterility and driven-ness.

La Pollera Colora (Michael Mayer Mix)....Gonzalo Martinez....8

while the "clucking" noise is too high up in the mix, this song has good layering and builds, and a nice, subtle fade-out. i really enjoyed the intro with its contrasting light-heavy beats.

Maps....Arcade Fire....2

a poor rendition of a good song. their voices suck.

Mifune (Martin Landsky Remix)....Sunsetpeople....8

full, moving, compelling.

Phantom Broadcast....The Go! Team....7

a nice little snippet from the old west. succeeds in part because it's short (like me).

Smiling Off (Luomo Remix)....Black Dice....3

spooky and bad.

They Wanna Know (Whisper edit/refix mix)....Mr Lee G & Ghislain Poirier....4

the vocals are better than the original, but they're still gross. damn that music is good though, innit?

washing up....Tomas Andersson....0

this song gives me the creeps and i never want to hear it again every. i had to lock the door while listening to it... that's how much it freaked me out. i think i'd rather listen to the animal collective than this. and it's especially disappointing because i was so sure i was going to like it.

it's fun and funny to read your comments after i've posted mine. (no, i sure didn't look. that makes it funner, huh?) i like seeing your narrative about the tracks, since that doesn't typically happen so much during an in-person session. nice summary on the radiohead; you expressed what i was thinking much better than i did.
here are our totals:

12. washing up...........Tomas Andersson.........6

They Wanna Know: hurray for a 9.5, highest individual Lucky 13 score to date! (my playlist got fucked up because of the protected songs, but i didn't realize it till i was already going, so i didn't listen to some of the songs in the proper order. perhaps if i had bookended They Wanna Know with Smiling Off and washing up, i'd have given it a much higher score. as we've discussed, context cannot be ignored.)

thanks, j.
