Well as has been stated, this is a work in progress and right now I believe it's all about functionality, not presentation

I guess I understand this, but what's the point of unveiling it early when it's still a literal eyesore? It's not like we can SEE the functionality.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

sure you can! every time you post something, read something INTERACT WITH THE PAGE!

I can't speak to the whys of it being put out there now, but just go with the flow, you know? I'm sure all will be worked out in time.

i for one am staying right here. i've had enough of this back and forth with all the problems and complaining and jon and everyone arguing all the time and i am just staying put. ;_; for now.

ogo (gcannon), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:51 (seventeen years ago) link

In terms of me typing an answer, pressing submit, and having it appear in the thread, you're right, it works, it's functional. But so did Old ILX and so does Sandbox ILX. What kind of functionality are we supposed to be impressed by?

it's completely new code, built entirely differently, the biggest change ilx has undergone since leaving greenspan. this is more about making sure things work as planned rather than impressing us.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Why doesn't nuILX just look exactly like oldILX?

Wouldn't that have been the easiest decision as far as design?

milo (milo), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

milo, pls tell me you're being sarcastic.

this is going to be like when protestant churches split in two over half the church wanting to do Power Point-fuelled nu-music and the other half wanting to stick to hymns and hymnals.

What's sarcastic about that? It's pretty much what I've been wondering throughout this entire thread.

Del Monte Young (ex machina), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago) link

this is more about making sure things work as planned rather than impressing us.

So you mean it was unveiled early so that people could get test posts in, make sure things don't fuck up? I guess that makes sense. I'll just leave it to you and Ned to make all of them.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago) link

our school was so poor we couldn't afford windows and then i learned to tie my shoelace

526 (526), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:01 (seventeen years ago) link

So Jaymc, since the content is the same and the appearance is slightly different, that means the appearance is the breaking point?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:01 (seventeen years ago) link

But so did Old ILX and so does Sandbox ILX. What kind of functionality are we supposed to be impressed by?

That's not true. Old ILX was bust to fuck. Before we left Australia, it was poxy fuled almost every day, purely because of the load. The new server bought us some time, but even then within about a month it was hitting the limits and timing out. I raised the limits twice, and it still kept growing. By June, I estimate, it would have been dead in the water again.

Sandbox ILX works because it has virtually no threads.

Both have huge security holes, which drives Jon crazy with temptation.

Appearance: the new stylesheet will slowly move closer to how ILX looks right now, I promise. But using stylesheets lets us have a preference for how you want ILX to look, so people who want old-school work-safe can have that, and someone who wants prettier versions or a version tailored for blackberries/phones can have them too.

why not? cinderblocks are cinderblocks be they in the jungle or the desert.

xxxxpost - the last consideration shows how ilx has truly arrived!

I briefly considered claiming something masonic but didn't really want to bring a shitstorm upon nuILX.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

yea whats up with that i want my treehouse in the desert maybe if i cry it will come

526 (526), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

So Jaymc, since the content is the same and the appearance is slightly different, that means the appearance is the breaking point?

Exactly.

and we've been talking about it throughout this entire thread!

All you've said is that functionality is more important than presentation. I'm saying we already have a template for presentation -- why go to the trouble of creating a new one? Or are functionality and presentation inextricably linked?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

no one has answered john's question yet i've noticed.

chicago kevin is still a little dizzy (chicago kevin), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:05 (seventeen years ago) link

it will have windows and i can peer out and stick tongue out at tuomas as he looks around and says what is a desert my shoelace is undone

Okay, that's kind of cool. Not to get all Tuomas, but I don't know what a stylesheet is -- are you saying Nu-ILX has them and Old-ILX didn't?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Not to get all Tuomas, but I don't know what a stylesheet is -- are you saying Nu-ILX has them and Old-ILX didn't?

Yes: old ILX hard-codes what it looks like, so it's difficult to change. New ILX can have a zillion different appearances. The one that's there just now is NOT FINAL.

stet (stet), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm saying we already have a template for presentation -- why go to the trouble of creating a new one? Or are functionality and presentation inextricably linked?

close, they are separate. pages in old ilx are built by php, nuilx, by java. they will be rendered differently and the onion-skin layer of presentation isn't an issue (nor should it really be) at this stage when the code and db elements are getting worked out. also stet has spoke to some of this on the thread on nu board.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 21:09 (seventeen years ago) link

So how do you tailor these stylesheets? I have little idea what they are or where they can be found.
