yeah, i'm being a little silly. i don't hate everyone on loser island. i just felt a little deflated by desmond dreamland after action and intrigue. i just didn't care that much. nice to see penny again.

scott seward (121212), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:17 (seventeen years ago) link

OTM Scott. Without the mystery and intrigue, this show means nothing to me. (And were they implying that Jack's tats are one of the ISLAND'S! BIGGEST! SECRETS!?)

I have to admit that Charlie is annoying when he get's all overprotective about Claire and the baby. But in that case, the clear solution is to kill off Claire and the baby. Charlie needs to stick around so I can giggle about Britpop never-weres and hobbits.

lindseykai (lindseykai), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:17 (seventeen years ago) link

BTW guys Charlie singing "Wonderwall" was gay, except when you realize the first line Des heard him sing was "maybe you're gonna be the one that saves me".

Drunk Hurley's "DUDE!" was his best utterance of the word since ever.

xpost

Would the producers sabotage their own ratings?

Yes.

nklshs (nklshs), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:18 (seventeen years ago) link

OTM OTM OTM

GAWD PVNCH (yournullfame), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

how about just kill charlie and claire? the baby doesn't bother me that much.

scott seward (121212), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago) link

so after everything we saw last night, where do you think libby fits in with the boat?

this is cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Season 4

nklshs (nklshs), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Dude loser island is soooo much better.

I definitely think the creators' were right when they said this episode would make or break LOST for you--the whole "ZOMG FATE" and more "ISLAND ARE MAGICALS" implications could definitely turn a lot of people off. I LUFFED IT THOUGH.

METAL ROBOTIC HEAD FACE (scarymonster), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I really liked it too, but felt this weird frustration when it was over, like, "um, was that really L O S T?".

nklshs (nklshs), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

My favorite moment of the whole thing was probably the microwave beep.

nklshs (nklshs), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked it. Flashbacks to events that never really happened are cool with me. Sad that Claire won't die although Charlie getting it is a small consolation.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Totally. I was all sorts of impressed that a simple generic beep on a TEEVEE SHOW could freak me the hell out the second I heard it.

What if L O S T is, in fact, a Dharma initiative psych experiment itself?

en i see kay (EstrangedNative), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually I really felt like it was closer to first season LOST than any episode since the, uh, first season. xxxpost

My theory is that Desmond's mind is going between two timelines--the one that started after the failsafe was hit started in the past, but actually moves in jumps and starts, so it's now a little bit into the future. Poor Desmond. :(

METAL ROBOTIC HEAD FACE (scarymonster), Thursday, 15 February 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

i feel like desmond was sent back along his own timeline, which is unchangeable, as is his future, and the island's

this is cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 15 February 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

but simply being sent back in time doesn't really explain knowing the future.

FAAAATEEEE.

METAL ROBOTIC HEAD FACE (scarymonster), Thursday, 15 February 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago) link

his timeline is no longer linear

this is cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 15 February 2007 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

therefore he keeps getting flashbacks to different points in time, whether they be past or future

this is cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 15 February 2007 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I can buy that!

But he definitely isn't PHYSICALLY time-traveling, so the issue of the number of timelines is kind of moot anyway, eh?

METAL ROBOTIC HEAD FACE (scarymonster), Thursday, 15 February 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

he is not physically time-travelling, but his memory has somehow been freed some the constraints of linear time

this is cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 15 February 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

so there are two kinds of lost fans then. stoners who talk philosophy when they are stoned and stoners who just stare blankly at the t.v. when they are stoned? MORE FISH TREATS PLEASE.

scott seward (121212), Thursday, 15 February 2007 17:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Whoa this episode wtf?

Fuck Claire not dying. I'd rather her than Charlie (HIERONYMUS PACE!), who at least occasionally gets some good zings. Also, hobbitses.

Stuck in ILX Limbo (Roz), Thursday, 15 February 2007 18:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I still don't get the Claire-hate. She's a cutie! Is there something loathsome in her diction that my American tin-ear can't pick up?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 15 February 2007 18:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I think it's the accent.

METAL ROBOTIC HEAD FACE (scarymonster), Thursday, 15 February 2007 18:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Guys, Charlie's not dying. No way. Desmond CAN change fate, or else they wouldn't have played that damned Mamas and the Papas song TWICE.

And Beth OTM - you can ask my roommate, I really did say to him (during scene when she thanked Desmond for saving her) "jesus I forgot how cute Claire is!".

nklshs (nklshs), Thursday, 15 February 2007 18:24 (seventeen years ago) link

where do you think libby fits in with the boat?

she gives/sells it to him right? I guess the only question is who sent her to keep Desmond on the correct fate-path. Maybe Libby was some kind of Dharma manipulator, doing their dirty work in the "real world" -- nudging Desmond in the right direction, keeping an eye on Hurley in the psych ward ....

Desmond CAN change fate, or else they wouldn't have played that damned Mamas and the Papas song TWICE.

but he didn't change fate, the universe "course corrected" until he got to the cricket bat

dmr (dmr), Thursday, 15 February 2007 18:26 (seventeen years ago) link

another more literal course correction was that the island wouldn't let him leave on his boat, he sailed around in circles

dmr (dmr), Thursday, 15 February 2007 18:29 (seventeen years ago) link

re: claire

Not the accent so much ("MOY BOY-BEEE!") these days. But really, besides giving birth to Aaron, she's probably the most pointless main character and really should be demoted to Rose/Bernard status. But I also think it's a Claire and Charlie thing - on their own, they're ok, but together, blegh.

By the way, if you google Charlie Hieronymus Pace, the first result gets you an Italian biography of Hieronymus Bosch, translated by one Claire Pace.

Stuck in ILX Limbo (Roz), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:03 (seventeen years ago) link

one thing is still bugging me about last week's episode and the Tom commment people were talking about -- "ever since the sky turned purple" their communications are down, or they can't get off the island anymore, or something

he was implying that if not for that event they would have sent Ben to a real-world clinic for surgery

but that doesn't really jibe with Ben saying they had targeted Jack bc of his surgical skillz .... they already had Jack in a hood when the sky turned purple

dmr (dmr), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:14 (seventeen years ago) link

My guess is that island-born Ben would rather not leave for medical assistance. So they sought out Jack's help, but were keeping the off-island option as a last resort (like if Dr. Douchebag chose not to cooperate). But then... PURPLE SKY!

lindseykai (lindseykai), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i feel like desmond was sent back along his own timeline, which is unchangeable

just a thought but was Charlie in the flashback really Charlie? if so it was a Charlie who never got famous (or else he would have been all YEAH YOU KNOW ME FROM DRIVESHAFT, BROTHA)

so some aspects of the past maybe are changeable?

although I think I agree that he didn't physically time-travel

dmr (dmr), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

he is not physically time-travelling, but his memory has somehow been freed some the constraints of linear time

except ehn he gets concussions, maybe?

yeah I guess that's right ... I forgot how the old woman said desmond's boat race was still "a few short years" away

k i just watched episode 8. i haven't read the thread yet because i just wanted to immediately post here to say HOLY FUCKING SHIT. SRSLY.

back later.

k my girlfriend just ridiculed my pensive "post-LOST thinking expression" after i spent a couple of minutes rubbing my temples. i feel she is somewhat underestimating my obsession.

teh_kit (g-kit), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:27 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm slow here,

was jewelry-store-mistress-of-time in "next week on lost"?

Rick Gibralter (grady), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:10 (seventeen years ago) link

do people in scotland really say "brotha" all the time? I like Desmond but it seems kinda fakey.

METAL ROBOTIC HEAD FACE (scarymonster), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost Yeah, I thought I saw her in there, too.

I think it's true, I've read the glasgow thread.

The Many Faces of Gordon Jump (Leon), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I say "Brotha" all the time. But only when impersonating Desmond. Which is all the time. Conversations in our house = "do you want to watch L O S T now, brotha" "yes, brotha", etc.

(I clicked on this thread by accident as I haven't watched this week's yet, but I caught that while scrolling down)

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago) link

that's a risky click

this is cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:25 (seventeen years ago) link

This episode totally ruled. I loved that so much of it was devoted to the "flashback."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Has the Desmond Hume - John Locke -philosopher point been made? Not that it means anything. To me.
I didn't love this episode - still like the thread(s) better!
I found it weird that Desmond wouldn't react more when red shoe guy got smushed RIGHT NEXT TO HIM!
That suspension of disbelief was too much for me.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:34 (seventeen years ago) link

was jewelry-store-mistress-of-time in "next week on lost"?

I thought that too, but jeweler time cop lady actress (Fionula Flanagen) isn't on next week's guest star roster (but Alex, Karl, and Tom are).

nklshs (nklshs), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Has the Desmond Hume - John Locke -philosopher point been made?

somebody mentioned it at some point I'm sure

there was also a Burke last week

not sure it means much beyond "zomg, questions of free will and causation"

dmr (dmr), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Drunk Hurley's "DUDE!" was his best utterance of the word since ever.

totally! possibly best uttered word of the past several episodes

so there are two kinds of lost fans then. stoners who talk philosophy when they are stoned and stoners who just stare blankly at the t.v. when they are stoned?

hand raised for former. totally into desmond's non-linear time access, plus some multi-dimensional stuff too

re: claire - that really was the first time in a long time she's looked cute and not been whiney

also, desmond, hottt

I didn't find this episode that great. Then again lately all the shows have kind of disppointed me :(. Anyway, did anyone notice the dharma logo on dead guy's red shoes? Or was I just hallucinating? I'm almost certain it was there, but what the fuck is it doing there?
