userscripts.org has lots of cool scripts-- I made one a while back -- http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/6619

jw (ex machina), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, I went to diveintogreasemonkey.org to see if they addressed this inability to edit scripts inside the app. Found this:

In the left-hand pane, select [script name] and click Edit. This should open the installed version of [script name] in your favorite text editor. (If it doesn't, verify that .js files are associated with your favorite text editor.)

I assume that's what the part about going into about:config and changing greasemonkey.editor is about. Is there somewhere in there to specifically link all .js files to an app?

wtf is this? (from the script site)

Google goes black

Google goes black to save world (if google was black we would save 30,000 megawatts a year)

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

All the energy from making Google's page light up white on monitors costs 30,000 megawatts a year, apparently. That script makes it black.

stet (stet), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:27 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, I guess I should have said I got that much. but still, that seems a random thing to script for. why not just tell people how to create their own style sheets. or maybe even worry about something more important? (how many megawatts does ilx use per year?)

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:28 (seventeen years ago) link

try creating a plain textfile and saving it to the desktop, then change the file extension from ".txt" to ".js" - then openit up again and see if you get textedit or if you're directed to choose an app, in which case, hey, textedit.

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

OK the bulbs used for backlighting monitors don't actually turn off when you make some pixels black. that's the dumbest shit that ever happened.

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

They also have a script that disappears the world when mommy puts her hands over your eyes.

Works for CRTs though.

RH, I actually remember having the problem you described, but I don't think I figured it out before a newer version of FF was released, which fixed the bug. Do you have an older (i.e. before v.1.5) version?

Donkey Kong New York (Lee), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

No, I'm up to date, 2.0.0.1.

I made TextEdit the defaut app for .js files, but it didn't have any effect on Firefox/Greasemonkey.

I am, I think, a bit sad to realise there's so many ILXors I know and love who don't have the nornmal amount of self control to just chuckle and ignore the various tools and irritants on ILX, and honestly feel this thing is neccesary.

Especially if it results in things like Kate being serious and she honestly thinks this gives her license to start acting like a 5 year old, which is just petty.

I enjoy laughing at the few people on here I don't want to read tbh *shrug*.

Also, hahaha Nabisco's joke was subtle, but I got it.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 15 February 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

this is going to increase my neuroses about no one liking me exponentially :(

Webber (Webber), Thursday, 15 February 2007 23:15 (seventeen years ago) link

i have no idea what a killfile is, what is going on?

this all sounds very tedious and i'm not going to bother reading this thread or anything to do with killfiles actually

so there.

pulled some rad stunts on my bmx today btw

probably ignorant question: I find Andrew's script more usable cos it's got the "post by ignored user [name] removed" line in it, is there any particular benefit in using kilxor instead?

IF YOU CAN'T RESIST THE URGE TO LOOK

jw (ex machina), Friday, 16 February 2007 00:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I had trouble getting Andrew's script to work for more than one user. xpost.

;_;

jw (ex machina), Friday, 16 February 2007 00:56 (seventeen years ago) link

in my kf i changed "post by ignored user [name] removed" to be "posts by [name] are stupid and should not be read by anyone" for laffs

esoj@w3rk (esoj@w3rk), Friday, 16 February 2007 01:27 (seventeen years ago) link

oh riiiiight! i suppose the double hr line thing that kilxor leaves you with is easy to overlook, so it looks like no-one's posted and you can pretend they don't exist, instead of thinking 'haha i am ignoring you and you don't know it (or care)' each time. it is for better people than I am. =[

really, Jessie? andrew's script is fine for more than one user for me, just putting them on successive lines, i had more trouble getting kilxor to work (mostly because i am thick).

cis boom bah (cis), Friday, 16 February 2007 01:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Jon I would nevar put you on an ignore list fwiw =)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 16 February 2007 02:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait, out of its context that sounds BAD!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 16 February 2007 02:04 (seventeen years ago) link

i couldn't make andrew's script work at all :-( what OS are you using, cis?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 16 February 2007 09:27 (seventeen years ago) link

OSX tiger? I think my firefox is up to date also. istr that Andrew made two different versions of his script and the second, which didn't need spaces replaced with +, worked for me.

cis boom bah (cis), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:37 (seventeen years ago) link

hmm, i shall investigate further. i switched back to firefox 1.5.7 a while ago, so maybe that's my problem. on the other hand, there's something almost sooting about not even noticing that posts are disappearing.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 16 February 2007 10:45 (seventeen years ago) link

killfiles are fucking gay.

I have persons I greatly dislike, but none are stupid enough to go through this pain in the ass process.

Also, they're mods, so it would be counter-productive.

this thread is not for arguing the merits of killfile usage, it is for questions about the implementation of killfiles. If you're sad that it's come to this, complain on the mod request board about how you would ban all of this white crybabies. thx.

TS: crybabies who do something to alleviate the nuisances in their life vs. crybabies who complain about the character flaws of people who feel their life contains nuisances which can and should be alleviated

Allyzay heard you got beat up in a club. (Allyzay Eisenschefter), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

The only thing I will crybaby about is that I don't think I should have to install and run a completely different web browser in order to get access to killfile functionality. That is a minor WAAAAAAAAAAAAH, though.

Jesus Dan (dan perry), Friday, 16 February 2007 16:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Dan, what browser do you use?
