if you had told me nine years ago when i first started writing about music that i would be seriously worried about whether or not to include a chingo bling mextape on my top ten list i would not have believed you, probably

Hey, "More Fish" has a jacked Siah and Yeshua beat!

a bulldog fed a cookie shaped like a kitten (austin), Saturday, 16 December 2006 16:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Is that a typo or does he really call them "mextapes"? Pun kudos.

Dom Passantino (DomPassantino), Saturday, 16 December 2006 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

no typo; his last two are called "America's Faborite Wetback: The Mextape" and "They All Want Him, But Who Can Afford Him?"

What do you kids think about Da Back Wudz?

I know I'm late to the game on this, but I picked up Wood Work at one of the Tower liquidation sales only because it was a buck fifty. I may have been scared off by the oompa loompa video (which is terrifying if you happen to wake up to it in the middle of the night after having taken NyQuil and passed out while watching the MTV Jams channel), but listening to the whole album makes me imagine it in a battle with the Field Mob record for Best 2006 Atlanta Rap Album Nobody Seems To Care About (Even Though It's Pretty Good And Definitely Better Than Idlewild).

Rich Boy - "Throw Some D's"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xC9Er-rpzJI

-- Rodney and His Gang vs. Mr. Tooth Decay (rodneyjgreen...), December 14th, 2006. (Rodney J. Greene)

ha just came here to ask about this. i love this track so much. "cadillick"

amon (amon), Sunday, 17 December 2006 05:29 (seventeen years ago) link

That song is incredibly awesome. I remember reading years ago someone talking about a certain rapper (no idea who, though I'm pretty sure they were Southern) always emphasizing the 2-3-4 beats. Rich Boy does that during the hook to great effect.

xpost:

I got a copy of Wood Work in the Tower outage, too, but haven't listened to it yet. The Field Mob album suxors, though.

throw some d's is boring

and what (ooo), Monday, 18 December 2006 05:27 (seventeen years ago) link

gave cursory listens to:

ghostface "more fish" - zzzzZ ?
new project pat - nice cover but kinda dull. been downhill since ghetty green
young dro "best thang smokin" - pretty good, would listen again a+++
new lil scrappy - money in the bank is great, rest is zzzz

older stuff:
dem franchize boyz "on top of our game" - nice
crime mob - ok, mostly got it for knuck if you buck

amon (amon), Monday, 25 December 2006 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

pimp c joint on that pat stayed in replay for about 3 weeks

and what (ooo), Monday, 25 December 2006 17:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I donno I think the Pat is pretty nice, like most of his albums (except for Layin da Smack Down) its 75% or so pretty great shit and a few tracks I never listen to. I think the best track might be "Get Down" but I like "Crack a Head" and the Pimp C track and obvious 'crossover' track "What Money Do," plus I liked all the singles.... Young Dro's Drama mixtape is good and i've listened to that a lot, does the album have that much new shit on it?

deej (deej), Monday, 25 December 2006 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

layin da smack down >>>> crook by the book

choose u, smokin out, this pimp = some of the best pat songs ever

and what (ooo), Monday, 25 December 2006 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Nah I know I like those but I skip more tracks on that than any other one. Anyway to me this new one doesn't seem out of step with the rest of his career, I guess he is on the downward arc as far as his relevence, like the rest of hypnotized minds, but I thought this album was strong.

deej (deej), Monday, 25 December 2006 21:03 (seventeen years ago) link

i dunno crook is mostly unlistenable to me, generic beats amd pat sounds cartoonish/ineffective

and what (ooo), Monday, 25 December 2006 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

! I'm surprised yr so down on it, 'cartoonish' was the response i had when "Googly Moogly" leaked though; I think i said something like 'Has Project Pat gone too far, finally become a foghorn leghorn caricature???,' but I grew to accept it and its always been a part of his appeal to a degree....Are you down on nu-Three-6 beats in general?

deej (deej), Monday, 25 December 2006 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

aside from "Stay Fly" obviously

deej (deej), Monday, 25 December 2006 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

layin da smack down is good, prob. the last thing i liked from him.

still haven't heard the baby/wayne thing.

amon (amon), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 09:13 (seventeen years ago) link

layin da smack down is the last album he released isnt it? or is there some other shit I don't know about.
i dont like it nearly as much as the rest of his records.

deej (deej), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

and what (ooo), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 23:00 (seventeen years ago) link

project pat - ballers b/w aceyalone - disconnected

and what (ooo), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 01:14 (seventeen years ago) link

didn't miss a beat

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver (hoosteen), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 01:22 (seventeen years ago) link

didn't MATCH the beat, amirite. (nah, ok, it's good.)

the new Trick Daddy album is surpassing my expectations, I guess because it's got zero buzz/promotion I wasn't really excited for it but it's really good if in a more one-dimensional way than his last couple albums.

Al (Alex In Baltimore), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 01:41 (seventeen years ago) link

HEY POPMATTERS WEHRE IS MY COPY OF THE TRIKK DADDY DAMMITTT

(wtf is a "twankie", lol)

amon (amon), Thursday, 28 December 2006 08:06 (seventeen years ago) link

lol @ ppl actually feeling a track i cooked up over like 10 minutes in response to a deej zing

and what (ooo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 13:07 (seventeen years ago) link

That Trick Daddy single reaffirms that "still" is one of the worst words a rapper can put in a chorus.

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:15 (seventeen years ago) link

i dunno i like bet that alot - isnt the still [pause] blah blah blah hook just from still dre

and what (ooo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, and I didn't think it was much of a hook then either. "I still..." anything (unless it's a declaration of romantic fidelity, and even then) is a pretty boring thing to write about.

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I only listened to the album once, but "Born A Thug" is the only track I remember grabbing me.

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:26 (seventeen years ago) link

do you hate still fly too??

and what (ooo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

you mean "Stay Fly"

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:01 (seventeen years ago) link

hahaha

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:01 (seventeen years ago) link

or do you mean the Big Tymers?

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:02 (seventeen years ago) link

cuz the diff there is that the Big Tymers are self-mocking rather than describing a commercially successful holding pattern, totally the exception that proves the rule

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:03 (seventeen years ago) link

i gotta still fly-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y

what about still ballin by trick & pac

and what (ooo), Thursday, 28 December 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Miccio, you'll retract your claim when Trick makes you weep with a tale of in utero fetal death, "Stillborn A Thug," on his next album.

haven't heard it, not really in much of a rush

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

"still not a player" is pretty fun!

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

he doesn't say "still" in the chorus though

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Thursday, 28 December 2006 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

thats the best song mentioned in this entire thread

It always irritated me that "Still Not A Player" appears before "I'm Not A Player" on Capital Punishment.
