Not really. We were actually talking about this last night, since there are like four decent New Orleans places in Madison and not very many in Chicago in Minneapolis. There's Heaven on Seven, but I thought it was overpriced and not a very good po boy.

JordanC (JordanC), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I suppose though, with the format of the game, that wouldn't really make a big difference.

I don't mind the new CYHSY and I also thought their first record was overhyped. The dude still sounds like drunk Gordon Gano.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 15:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay Kenan, here is what you do. You go to Lawrence's seafood and you get a 1/2 pound of the best damn shrimp I've ever eaten. You take it home, where you have a soft french loaf, shredded lettuce, mayo, tomato slices, pickles, and hot sauce waiting. Then you have the best po boy ever eaten.

JordanC (JordanC), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 15:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I was not impressed with CYHSY when I saw John's band open for them.

JordanC (JordanC), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw them here at about that same time. It was a decent rock show, kinda crowded for my tastes but they were big hyped up at the time. I can't say it ruled, I've definitely been to shows that left much, much bigger impressions on me. But it wasn't bad. The fact that it was free kind of helped, probably.

Yeah, I'm hoping that bar trivia will not be as scholastic in nature as high-school quiz bowl but will still be academic enough to resemble Jeopardy! or Trivial Pursuit more than the VH1 World Series of Pop Culture.

Goddamn I want a shrimp po'boy.

I like eating shrimp po' boys with vegetarians like lesbians like straight girls.

JordanC (JordanC), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago) link

(I could've put another "eating" in there but I didn't)

JordanC (JordanC), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

That reminds me: should I agree to be set up with someone who doesn't eat meat or drink (DRINK!) and see if I can fix either/both of those conditions? I think the setter-upper is secretly hoping I will.

And lo, she was known as Laurel the Corruptor

danno martinez (danno martinez), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago) link

They say you can't change him, but when they say that they're talking about trying to change him *for the better*. Maybe it can work the other way round.

DO IT, DO IT

The non-drinkingness sounds like a huge challenge and possibly not worth it, but what do I know.

I eat fishies now. I had shrimp and mussels on Valentine's Day and salmon on Sunday.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:32 (seventeen years ago) link

20 bucks if Laurel can flip the vegetarian.

xpost - Getting him to drink, though - sometimes people don't drink because they know what assholes they are when they do.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Excellent.

Veg is sadness because it means my cooking will go un-et by Liked One, but drinking? What do people even DO with themselves?

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

One of my very good friends (Kid, from the band) does not drink, but he makes up for it with his eating.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

haha Yes! And with enthusiasm!

lavender mofo (kenan), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:45 (seventeen years ago) link

morbs, the production on the ace frehley version is HYSTERICAL! they bury his vocals in the harmony because of his atrocious accent, then the mid-range is pumped up in the word "groove" causing a "back in a new york grOOOHve" sound. it's amazing.

chicago kevin, it is said, never gives up his dead (chicago kevin), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

John, pretty much everything has meat or meat base in it somewhere. Lentils for brek this morning? Totally awesome made with bacon and home-made chicken stock.

I rollerskated to 'New York Groove' all the time as a kid.

I dated someone who didn't drink (and was in AA), but it wasn't a problem, especially because she still went to bars (and music shows in bars, etc.). I can't seem to stop dating vegetarians, which makes ordering chateaubriand impossible.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:58 (seventeen years ago) link

pork chop sandwiches

JordanC (JordanC), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 16:59 (seventeen years ago) link

The bacon is probably an integral ingredient in that recipe, so it's not that, but I'm not sure what the point of the chicken stock is. I guess I just dislike the notion that vegetarian food is flavorless unless it's gussied up with meat. I'm not saying don't eat cheeseburgers, I'm just saying lentils are pretty great on their own.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 17:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Nueske's thick-cut applewood-smoke bacon would convert anyone to the meat-eating cause.

I remember the Ace Frehley version from high school. meh.

^^^^ mix with garlic, salt, pepper, cucumbers, tahini. Jerusalem salad up in this piece!

Also good with this combination sans tahini as a cooling side dish with hot hot curries.

N: Starts at 8, right? I may catch a ride over if I can find one, otherwise it'll be the Fullerton bus. I'm shooting for between 7:30 and 8 I guess.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not sure yet. Probably depends on how late I stay at work, which would determine if I go straight there or if I go home first and then drive.

I have eaten there, yes. I remember it being pretty good, though I can't tell you what I had. It was a few years ago.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 February 2007 17:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Do you guys need to be there any earlier to sign up?

I just consumed a blend of 6 live active cultures. BOO YAH!
