I had some friends who smoked Capris 100s (or 110s?) for a while because it was ironic, or something. I had a few, they were like air.

When I started it was (don't laught) Benson & Hedges Ultra-Light Menthol 100s

THAT WAS MY FIRST CIGARETTE, TOO. Srsly, I still get a nostalgic scent off of those. And erotic, even, because my first girlfriend smoked them.

Has anyone else tried the little asian grocery that's on broadway right by my place? Golden Palace, I think? It's really cool. They have good fruit.

I LUV that store. Cheap Srirachia sauce, fun stuff like Beef Blood, Pig Blood, and Beef Bile*, frozen pre-cooked sushi rice, and a lot of cheap everything Asian.

I used to go to that place and buy absurd amounts of Pocky and jelly candy. I miss it!

ok, jesse, if you can go to that store, you can come to my apartment. You have no more excuses.

Today was pretty great. Lunch at Giordanos, worked for 2 hours, then dinner at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba. Tapas are God's Own method of dining.

Highlights:
-Filet, med-rare, topped with blue cheese
-Mushrooms stuffed with spinach and manchego cheese
-Roasted bacon-wrapped dates with an apple cider vinaigrette OMG, GOOD! I'm going to make these at home.

Also, tapas-sized desserts are the perfect size.

Cocktail of note: Rebujito- Dry sherry with sprite and fresh lemon. Unusual.

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 04:56 (seventeen years ago) link

At the adjoining table there was a young restaurant manager bitching about the following

-He can't let his employees sell Girl Scout Cookies because if he allows 1 outside agency in, it opens the door for solicitation by unions.

-He has to do super-thorough background checks because the unions are always trying to come in and "infect his employees."

-Work at Will laws are not nearly strong enough, and leave an employer virtually powerless to fire an employee after 90 days except for in cases of exceptionally bad work, and then only after tons of warnings. One time he accidentally hired a union mole, and fortunately caught him within the first 90 days and was able to fire him.

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 05:03 (seventeen years ago) link

(That first bullet point was his restaurant group's official policy, which he was quoting.)

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 05:04 (seventeen years ago) link

That's true, actually. It's okay to have an occasionaly charity collection drive, but other than that, you can't allow some types of solicitation at the workplace without giving union organizers equal access. I forget the case. Don't tell my labor law prof.

That work at will stuff is just nonsense and makes me want to smack him around a little.

OMG, they really knew how to mess us up at this restaurant gig last night. First, the unlimited long island ice teas that got me more drunk that I had been all weekend in Chicago. Then the free dinner afterwards was just not to be believed. It was like two Thanksgivings. They kept bringing out giant plates of chicken, fried chicken, chicken wings, smothered pork chops, ham, rice, stuffing, cake, mac & cheese, chicken, etc.. I'm giving up food for lent and I don't think I'm going to miss it.

JordanC (JordanC), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 14:28 (seventeen years ago) link

That dinner is like Thanksgiving if they have Thanksgiving in heaven!

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 14:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha. What's the opposite of food poisoning? I think I'm going to go home on account of that (and I have another parochial school gig this afternoon).

Happy Mardi Gras!

I am a grumpy monster this morning. GRUMPY! MONSTER!

I think this started yesterday, when my mom emailed me this sad story. She thought she'd finally made a friend in her new city (she's been there a year). She's been going to see movies with this woman. Anyway, she had such a great time this weekend with her and they talked for a really long time after the movie. Then my mom is like, Hey! We should just have a movie night once a week! What do you say? And the lady was positive about it. Then the next morning, my mom got an email from her basically saying, yeah, the thing is I'm really busy and don't have time to spend with you...

I hate that lady. How can anyone not want to spend time with my mom? :-(

Anyway, it sort of started a little kindling for sadness in me, which this morning has fired up into a decent sized ball of rage. Despite all my rage, I'm still just a rat... and so on.

xpost - oh yeah! Something to be glad about!

Hey, can anybody recommend a decent temp agency in Chicago? Or agencies? I need some income.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 15:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry, no.

But Matt, if you're still on here, you can email me and I can send you some pointers on where/how to get shows (if you're not scared of me after my huge post just now).

Deric, my husband worked with a temp agency to some success but I can't remember what it is. I'll ask him, though.

Here is your feminist RAGE for the day. Do not read if you are already feeling overwhelmed with negative emotions about our big dumb world.

And mad hugglez to Sarah and her mom. I would go to the movies with your mom!

Yeah there was a blurb about the performance at the Children's Museum. Mostly talked about the kids' activities, but the band was namedropped and they played a recording of music and parade with laughing kids and such.

Supposedly there are photographs on CPR's site but I can't find them right now.

I don't see on anything on their website yet either but there is a photo of five dudes with sousaphones and blue tracksuits, so close enough.

Please tell me that MDD wears matching track suits, even if it's not true, because that's awesome. Even better, tell me that you wear marching band uniforms.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 15:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Here is your feminist RAGE for the day.

I'm not sure that stops with, or even begins with, feminism. There are so many things wrong with that.

I hear that in Asian cities the wealthier women sometimes get surgery to make their eyes more round.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Tell me lies. Tell me sweet, little lies.

xp - no, there is lots of racism, classism, and capitalist manipulation in there, too. And that is true about eye surgery. And women in the US get their vadges tightened and lifted.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 15:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually we do have matching track jackets. And matching dickie pants/shirts, hoodies, letter jackets, etc.

JordanC (JordanC), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 15:56 (seventeen years ago) link

teasing your poultry (kenan), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 15:56 (seventeen years ago) link

or did you mean lifted like shoplifted?

teasing your poultry (kenan), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I take a holistic view of oppression in that I think you can't fully separate sexism, racism, and classism because that they are of similar origin - those in power trying to preserve the heirarchy that gives them their power and privilege. Similarly, even oppressed groups can find a stake in preserving the hierarchy to hang on to whatever power/privilege they are allotted. I think that the methods of oppression differ depending on the target group, and that those on the receiving end experience the impact of racism/classism/sexism in different ways and to different degrees, but I think its all of a piece. This is just a great example of that: the "whitening cream" is definitely a feminist issue (because it's targeted to women generally, who are told that their entire value is in their looks, and to dark-skinned women, who are told that they are even less valuable than light-skinned women) as well as a race and class issue.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 16:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Lifted like they have their labia tightened up so they don't dangle so much. Dangly labia. It's the scourge of rich women everywhere.

no, you're right.

I almost take this as a good sign, though. India is in the middle of some heavy social transition if the powers that be are being this heavy-handed about keeping the ladies down. And using capitalist means to do it! What a world.

I wonder if it's some kind of package deal. Eyes rounded, tits enlarged, labia tucked, and asshole bleached.
