I love the word "cadre."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:40 (seventeen years ago) link

It's maybe not as cool as "phalanx," but it blends in better.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I know it sounds like I am taking one position on something (drinking in class) and then totally changing my position depending on someone else's opinion (Teacher Amanda's) and that's because that is exactly what I'm doing. I did this the other day when I starte railing on people who wear sweatpants to class and the person I was talking to was like, "I wear sweatpants all the time!" and my response was, "Well, that's different!" and I was being totally honest. It was different because I like this person so there is an exception to my opinions special for her. (And any of you who want to wear sweatpants to class and drink in class OR get angry at people who drink in class.)

I'm coming to realize that's just the way I roll, opinion-wise.

I hate X except when Friend Y does it, in which case it's totally acceptable.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't even think I could pronounce "phalanx" without sounding like I had a mouthfull of novacaine.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:45 (seventeen years ago) link

hey chicago folks.

do you have any recommendations of good venues my band might be able to get a gig in chicago. i've heard it's really tough to get into the "cool" venues, so any advice would be much appreciated. thx.

We should follow up last summer's all-shorts karaoke night with an all-sweatpants karaoke night.

Matt - try South Union Arts (as long as you're not a straight-up rock band).

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I have a pair of sweatpants I have never worn. I guess I am saving them for the right occasion. With all of you.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Shorts! That's another excellent example.

I do have a pair of sweat pants. They say DePaul on them and I wear them all the time but only around the house and to Jewel.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I have LPs (leisure pants) but they are not gathered-at-the-ankle sweatpants.

ALTHOUGH I must tell you that in college I had a huge crush on this obviously ballsy dude who would wear the same sweatpants and Public Enemy t-shirt to breakfast every single day. He swaggered mightily and didn't give a single goddamn shit what he was wearing. He was cute and I invited him (anonymously) to a party once. The story will end there.

Armando Grouse (Armando ), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:55 (seventeen years ago) link

NOTE: I do not mean he had giant balls -- just that he boldly wore the same sweatpants every day, which takes confidence, which is appealing.

Armando Grouse (Armando ), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Matt - try South Union Arts (as long as you're not a straight-up rock band).

hmm....we're pretty "regular" like post punk/new wavish...is that more an art space/noise/improv dealy?

just m@tt he1g3s0n (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Leisure pants! I refer to mine as "house pants." My DP sweatpants are the modern kind that are really just flappy-legged yoga pants made out of sweatpants material. I have... gawd, like eight pairs of house pants? Only that one pair could be considered sweatpants, though.

If I spent that much time schlepping around the house to need eight pairs of house pants, why do I feel so stressed out, I ask you?

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:59 (seventeen years ago) link

That is possibly the most boring and pointless thing I have ever posted on ILX. GO ME.

I have all my windows open, and the wind is whipping through here, clearing out weeks of staleness with its balmy 42 degrees.

Matt - it's kind of arty (Tim Kinsella and the like play there).

Maybe Beat Kitchen or Subterranean? I get the feeling that no one randomly checks out shows here at most bars, so it's hard to know where to play and get an audience.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 00:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I prefer "house trousers".

Matt H -- what dates are you looking at? Would you be able to guarantee any draw? There are some "name" clubs that MoN might be able to get into (and I might be able to inquire about), but if you're just looking for a place to play on an off-night, a non-traditional venue might be just as good (if not better) in terms of a built-in crowd.

Golden Palace (Asian market that Kenan mentioned) which is great for noodles, sauces, odd produce and giant frozen fishes

Actually, I was wrong. I just walked past it. It's Golden Pacific. Golden Palace is... a casino?

John, I would be psyched for trivia but I think we are having band practice on Weds., which will be necessary since we're playing on Friday and haven't had a "real" practice in a while.

jaymc said in the cigarette thread: When I started it was (don't laught) Benson & Hedges Ultra-Light Menthol 100s

And I may have already told you this, but I smoked those for about a year in high school because that is what my boyfriend smoked. Prior to dating him, I smoked the much more butch Salem Lights.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 03:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I had some friends who smoked Capris 100s (or 110s?) for a while because it was ironic, or something. I had a few, they were like air.

THAT WAS MY FIRST CIGARETTE, TOO. Srsly, I still get a nostalgic scent off of those. And erotic, even, because my first girlfriend smoked them.

Has anyone else tried the little asian grocery that's on broadway right by my place? Golden Palace, I think? It's really cool. They have good fruit.

I LUV that store. Cheap Srirachia sauce, fun stuff like Beef Blood, Pig Blood, and Beef Bile*, frozen pre-cooked sushi rice, and a lot of cheap everything Asian.

Today was pretty great. Lunch at Giordanos, worked for 2 hours, then dinner at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba. Tapas are God's Own method of dining.

Highlights:
-Filet, med-rare, topped with blue cheese
-Mushrooms stuffed with spinach and manchego cheese
-Roasted bacon-wrapped dates with an apple cider vinaigrette OMG, GOOD! I'm going to make these at home.

Also, tapas-sized desserts are the perfect size.

Cocktail of note: Rebujito- Dry sherry with sprite and fresh lemon. Unusual.

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 04:56 (seventeen years ago) link

At the adjoining table there was a young restaurant manager bitching about the following

-He can't let his employees sell Girl Scout Cookies because if he allows 1 outside agency in, it opens the door for solicitation by unions.

-He has to do super-thorough background checks because the unions are always trying to come in and "infect his employees."

-Work at Will laws are not nearly strong enough, and leave an employer virtually powerless to fire an employee after 90 days except for in cases of exceptionally bad work, and then only after tons of warnings. One time he accidentally hired a union mole, and fortunately caught him within the first 90 days and was able to fire him.

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 05:03 (seventeen years ago) link

(That first bullet point was his restaurant group's official policy, which he was quoting.)

Metrosexual Healing (crunkleJ), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 05:04 (seventeen years ago) link

That's true, actually. It's okay to have an occasionaly charity collection drive, but other than that, you can't allow some types of solicitation at the workplace without giving union organizers equal access. I forget the case. Don't tell my labor law prof.

That work at will stuff is just nonsense and makes me want to smack him around a little.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 14:18 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG, they really knew how to mess us up at this restaurant gig last night. First, the unlimited long island ice teas that got me more drunk that I had been all weekend in Chicago. Then the free dinner afterwards was just not to be believed. It was like two Thanksgivings. They kept bringing out giant plates of chicken, fried chicken, chicken wings, smothered pork chops, ham, rice, stuffing, cake, mac & cheese, chicken, etc.. I'm giving up food for lent and I don't think I'm going to miss it.

JordanC (JordanC), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 14:28 (seventeen years ago) link

That dinner is like Thanksgiving if they have Thanksgiving in heaven!

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 14:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha. What's the opposite of food poisoning? I think I'm going to go home on account of that (and I have another parochial school gig this afternoon).

Happy Mardi Gras!

I am a grumpy monster this morning. GRUMPY! MONSTER!

I think this started yesterday, when my mom emailed me this sad story. She thought she'd finally made a friend in her new city (she's been there a year). She's been going to see movies with this woman. Anyway, she had such a great time this weekend with her and they talked for a really long time after the movie. Then my mom is like, Hey! We should just have a movie night once a week! What do you say? And the lady was positive about it. Then the next morning, my mom got an email from her basically saying, yeah, the thing is I'm really busy and don't have time to spend with you...

I hate that lady. How can anyone not want to spend time with my mom? :-(

Anyway, it sort of started a little kindling for sadness in me, which this morning has fired up into a decent sized ball of rage. Despite all my rage, I'm still just a rat... and so on.

xpost - oh yeah! Something to be glad about!

But Matt, if you're still on here, you can email me and I can send you some pointers on where/how to get shows (if you're not scared of me after my huge post just now).
