Sam OTM x 2 (though pretending you've killfiled someone will get REALLY wearing when it replaces zinging as the new thing that people do)

Queen Amidala: Although we do not always agree, Your Honor, our two great societies have always lived in peace. The Trade Federation has destroyed all that we have worked so hard to build. If we do not act quickly, all will be lost forever. I ask you to help us... no, I beg you to help us.
[Amidala drops to her knees in front of the Gungan assembly]
Queen Amidala: We are your humble servants.
[One by one, everyone in Amidala's party gets on one knee in front of the Gungan assembly]
Queen Amidala: Our fate is in your hands.
Boss Nass: Hmmmmm.
[rubs his chin in thought]

I like PP's new approach.

Thanks! I've tried really hard to temper my Texas-hating ways. By doing so, I've picked up some really cool home repair tips!

Human-ignore isn't 100% fool (i.e. ILXoR) proof because how many of us are driven mad by someone but still we submit to the sweet torture of reading their posts?

Anakin Skywalker: He won't give up his power. I just learned the terrible truth. I think Chancellor Palpatine is a Sith Lord.
Mace Windu: A Sith Lord?
Anakin Skywalker: Yes, the one we've been looking for.
Mace Windu: How do you know this?
Anakin Skywalker: He knows the ways of the Force. He's been trained to use the Dark Side.
Mace Windu: Are you sure?
Anakin Skywalker: Absolutely.
Mace Windu: Then our worst fears have been realized. We must move quickly if the Jedi Order is to survive.

if you killfile anakin it looks like mace is going crazy

get your letter cases right

Ah. This may be the answer.

Killfiles are tools imo, similar to settings like "Don't show images". It's easy enough to read the posts if you want, and with Andrew's script, you see which ignored user made the missing post.

Chard with anchovies for lunch - mmmmm.

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:13 (seventeen years ago) link

In theory I could have multiple killfiles named after different users and I could check or uncheck individuals as necessary , right?

Anakin: I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals. I HATE THEM!

For example, I could just check killexmachina before I open this thread. ;)

hot tip: killfiling ned speeds up load times by 37%

^@^ (map), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:18 (seventeen years ago) link

fluffy: yes. you could also have multiple killfiles for different users and be thread-specific in the "Included Pages" list. Probably easier to edit that one time per thread than keep turning users on and off!

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Tom, I went back to Andrew's script, looked at it for a second, slapped myself in the head, and removed the // from the front of the ignoreUser line. Jaq was my test-killee (pretty impossible to misspell) and it worked. But now I've gone back to it to try to kill GZeus's current screen name, and it won't work again, either with spaces or with plus signs in place of the spaces.

Actually I was just wondering how quickly I could read ILX if I kilxor'd Ned, Ally, kate, jaymc, etc.

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

No no no no no not screen name!! user name!! the "Rock Hardy" to your "PEW research center"

You should work in tech support.

I should work in interface design/data presentation

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:27 (seventeen years ago) link

RH, that was one that gave me fits on ole-ILX. Tried it with spaces and +s and eventually made it the first one on the list, which (maybe coincidentally or maybe because of the case issue) worked.

jaq (jaq), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, FIXED. GZeus is blocked. THANX FOR PATIENTS, GUISE!

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

it works basically exactly the same way

^@^ (map), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

It's exactly the same, but it only works with firefox.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Shouldn't be too tricky to write for one of the Safari scripters (he says without having looked at what Creammonkey will do, natch)

stet (stet), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, I get it now. What you're saying is that if I read the thread with the instructions on it, I can learn to do the thing. Interesting.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

hot tip: killfiling ned speeds up load times by 37%

lol etc. but the truth is killfiling (at least with these client-side scripts) slows load times a little (proportional to thread length). exactly how much slower depends on your CPU. fyi.

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:43 (seventeen years ago) link

way to kill the buzz, dude

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Ally's running shit on some Win98 beige pizza box at work and doesn't seem to have a performance problem!

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I was wondering if that was my imagination. (re very slight slowdown)

accentmonkey, I'm emailing you the exact script file I'm using. Still a pain to have to uninstall and open the file in TextEdit for every change I want to make, but at least I can say I got it to work. Otherwise, follow the first four paragraphs of Tom's original post here.

The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Winner. Thanks Rock.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:51 (seventeen years ago) link

RH, I thought I told you that you didn't need to uninstall the script to make changes! (That's Killfile humor there, folx.)

Donkey Kong New York (Lee), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

i.e. if you're in Firefox, right-click (if you're not using Macs!) on the Greasemonkey icon, select "Manage User Scripts," select Kilxor (or whichever you have), hit "Edit," and voila! No more Ned Raggett.

Donkey Kong New York (Lee), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:55 (seventeen years ago) link

i'd really like a killfile for life.

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Lee, I've been doing exactly that and "Edit" doesn't bring the script up for me to edit. Nothing happens.

The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

userscripts.org has lots of cool scripts-- I made one a while back -- http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/6619

jw (ex machina), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, I went to diveintogreasemonkey.org to see if they addressed this inability to edit scripts inside the app. Found this:

In the left-hand pane, select [script name] and click Edit. This should open the installed version of [script name] in your favorite text editor. (If it doesn't, verify that .js files are associated with your favorite text editor.)

I assume that's what the part about going into about:config and changing greasemonkey.editor is about. Is there somewhere in there to specifically link all .js files to an app?

The PEW Research Center for Panty-Twisting (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:20 (seventeen years ago) link

wtf is this? (from the script site)

Google goes black

Google goes black to save world (if google was black we would save 30,000 megawatts a year)

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

All the energy from making Google's page light up white on monitors costs 30,000 megawatts a year, apparently. That script makes it black.

stet (stet), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:27 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, I guess I should have said I got that much. but still, that seems a random thing to script for. why not just tell people how to create their own style sheets. or maybe even worry about something more important? (how many megawatts does ilx use per year?)

Ms Misery (MsMisery), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:28 (seventeen years ago) link

try creating a plain textfile and saving it to the desktop, then change the file extension from ".txt" to ".js" - then openit up again and see if you get textedit or if you're directed to choose an app, in which case, hey, textedit.

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

OK the bulbs used for backlighting monitors don't actually turn off when you make some pixels black. that's the dumbest shit that ever happened.

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

They also have a script that disappears the world when mommy puts her hands over your eyes.

After two days in hospital I took a turn for the nurse. (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rain, Thursday, 15 February 2007 20:35 (seventeen years ago) link
