Also, Dominick's is a union shop. Solidarity and all that.

Ugh. Less food politics, more roffles. Sorry.

She actually can open the files just fine, and I showed her. And explained that she was just being Space Paranoid. (not really.)

I bought some powerbars and cookies for the road and I'm going to end up eating them all before I even get to the road. :(

I am sad that the Lakeview TJ's has apparently discontinued soy nuggets.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Yet another product name, like nutritional yeast, that just makes the mouth water.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

xp Huh.

Whatever, soy nuggets totally rule.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

:)

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Julia's roomie's gf made this amazing-looking things the other night that I cannot describe other than "soy logs." They looked like giant mozzarella sticks. She was half-offended when I said that, until I explained that this is a Very Good Thing.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Did they come with soy club sauce?

...ok, that joke is getting tired.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Places I go every week:
Dom's (for basics - usually don't buy much outside of beans, canned tomatoes, lunch meat from deli and beer)
Ro-Pa Fruit Market (for fruit/veg/tortillas,etc.)

Places I go 2x/month:
Trader Joe's for frozen shit, including fish, which is indeed cheaper there than anywhere else. Other things I get there include: dried fruits/nuts, cereal, coffee, wine (DUH), stuff for Dan to make when I'm not there, applesauce, mochi, various other things, including meat which is of a higher quality and cheaper than I could get elsewhere. Oh, and CHEESE. Their cheese section rules.

Places I go once a month or so:
Golden Palace (Asian market that Kenan mentioned) which is great for noodles, sauces, odd produce and giant frozen fishes

And the Spice House for spices.

I do spend a lot of time grocery shopping and cooking, but it makes me happy and I guess that's something I do for "fun."

One place I never go is Whole Foods. Too expensive.

The end.

Armando Grouse (Armando ), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:49 (seventeen years ago) link

clubsauce.com is disappointing.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Lemme tell you something else -- someone put a bottle of Annie's Goddess dressing in my cart at Dom's on Saturday and I didn't find it til I got home and had obvs already paid for it. WTF.

Armando Grouse (Armando ), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

cereal

How could I forget cereal! That's also a staple. Nature's Path 4-EVA.

And the Spice House for spices.

I meant to tell you, Amanda, I went there for the first time on Saturday. OMG. I bought some cinnamon. Kr bought about $35 worth of various spices and things like "orange flower water." I can't believe I'd never been there before, esp. since the Evanston store was two blocks away from my last job.

We also checked out House of Glunz, the 119-year-old wine store on Division/Wells while we were at it. This was on the recommendation of EZ from an archived Chicago thread.

xxpost WTF @ BUYING *STOCK* ON TEH INTERNETS

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Yay! Now you can take back the "I just use the ancient spices that my aunt gave me when she died because how much better can these other spices be?" excuse. They ARE better.

Armando Grouse (Armando ), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I have orange flower water too. And rose water for the baklava I have yet to attempt. I'm sort of scared because of all of the butter called for in the recipes I found. Truly staggering amounts of butter. I used the orange flower water in cookies once. It was good.

Armando Grouse (Armando ), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

xp "Oh, this Rouille? I got it at clubsauce dot com. I buy all my classic sauces there! It's so cheap and easy!"

I really need to quell my righteous indignation and get back to work...

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Yay! Now you can take back the "I just use the ancient spices that my aunt gave me when she died because how much better can these other spices be?" excuse. They ARE better.

Haha, did I really say that? I don't even know where those spices are. I think I threw them out. (And she didn't die. She just moved.) To be honest, I don't really cook enough to get into whether or not Spice House spices are "worth it" -- but I loved the store, and I love how all the spices are hand-blended, and there's just so many of them. It made me want to buy a bunch of stuff that I probably won't ever use.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:01 (seventeen years ago) link

You did say that! Otherwise how would I have known that you had old auntie spices? I do apologize for sending her to the grave early.

I can assure you that they're worth it. Cinnamon that tastes spicy and not like sawdust is priceless, but even so it's not that much more expensive than grocery store cinnamon.

I am currently trying to wean myself off of licorice. It's not easy. I was eating a couple of pieces with breakfast (and lunch and dinner and before bed and when I took the dogs out...) -- that's how bad it got. I ate a pound in ONE WEEK. Time to lay off the candy.

Armando Grouse (Armando ), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:05 (seventeen years ago) link

what licorice were you eating? was it the australian black kind b/c that stuff is AMAZING.

sweet tater (sweet tater), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I was gonna say, that's not a bad thing to have accidentally end up in your cart.

Congrats on the triathlon, Kels!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

It was awesome! It was unconventional in that it was not a distance specific thing. It was indoors & you just did 30 minutes of each thing. I swam just a hair over 3/4 of a mile, biked about 7.7 miles and ran 2.9 miles. I felt really good about my distances. I only started training 6 weeks ago (hence the 6 days/week stuff). I'm totally doing another one in May or early June. Anyone else want to do it? I'm thinking of doing a sprint instead of an olympic one, but maybe next year I will do an olympic.

sweet tater (sweet tater), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Licorice tastes bad, so it can't be that unhealthy.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I would love to do a triathlon but I'm not a very good/fast swimmer.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

You can improve! Easily! I went from getting lessons on strokes (I didn't know any) in January to swimming for 30 minutes. If I can do it, you certainly can. Really!! I'm insanely pumped about this new side of myself.

sweet tater (sweet tater), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:20 (seventeen years ago) link

sweet tater (sweet tater), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I dunno. Implying that people who shop at Jewel are hopeless rubes didn't seem to stop us.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I am re-starting my exercise routine this evening. It's one of those things I really want to do but have had a hell of a time convincing myself to do again. The first few times are always the hardest, but then it's a cake walk. I want/need to lose ~25 lbs. I figure I can do it inside of 3 months or so...

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:25 (seventeen years ago) link

We're going to the gym tonight. I plan to listen to the new LCD SS for the first time.

Calico (calico), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Good for you, dude. I'm going to restart next week. It was going to be this week, but this week is gig, gig, rehearse/shop for wedding present, gig, bake dessert for ev3n's wedding, wedding/gig, hangover.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

You can totally do 25 pounds in 3 months, but don't feel discouraged if you don't make it, Dan! That's roughly 2 pounds each week which is the max you should be losing (& be healthy about it). I certainly haven't lost that on WW (although I think I've lost maybe 2 or 3?).I joined weight watchers a week & 1/2 ago & have been exercising for 6 weeks at a rate of 6 days each week. I lost two inches through my torso. I think I'm going to start weight lifting next week & keep at the crazy schedule. I will tell you that Trader Joe's meringue cookies are a sweet tooth saver. You can eat a buttload of the tiny chocolate ones & they hardly count.
Want to do a sprint tri with me in May or June to have an exercise goal to shoot for?

sweet tater (sweet tater), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

man, this thread is huge! so, another music trivia last night, with a round by jon wurster of superchunk, all about drummers. sample question:

what song from 1967 had james brown saying 'give the drummer some'?

Want to do a sprint tri with me in May or June to have an exercise goal to shoot for?

I don't know if I'm up for that just yet! My poor knees aren't too good at actual (read: non-eliptical) running. I'd settle for being able to wear my skinny jeans again!

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Where is it, Kelsey?

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

We're toying between a few . . .there are a couple near me in MN & then there's also one in Iowa (near Iowa City) that look good. The distances seem reasonable, entry fee isn't horrible, etc.

sweet tater (sweet tater), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I can email the ones we're tossing around if you want!

sweet tater (sweet tater), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:38 (seventeen years ago) link

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:44 (seventeen years ago) link

you guys are good, clearly. i'm trying to think of other questions but blanking at the moment on his round. other rounds were a music history/innovations round, a broadway/musicals round, and an audio round consisting of only whistling.
