My groceries are cheap as hell, dudes (Woodman's). Still haven't been to the Trader Joe's that opened up here.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:35 (seventeen years ago) link

xp As a consequence, Jewel and Dominick's always seem really huge and weird and Middle American to me.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Has anyone else tried the little asian grocery that's on broadway right by my place? Golden Palace, I think? It's really cool. They have good fruit.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I last went to Trader Joe's two weeks ago. It was full to the rafters with yuppies who were moving soooooo sloooooowly, mouths agape, through the place. Then there were the employees stocking shelves with huge boxes of stuff blocking the aisles (or rather, not stocking, but standing around bulshitting). I made it through the first aisle, put my few items back on the shelf, turned around, and got the hell out of there. I cannot deal with an IKEA/Target/Water Tower Place department store on Christmas Eve environment when I'm trying to get my food on.

Plus, I've said it before and I will say it again, their produce is shitty and overpriced in my experience. Go to one Stanley's/Belmont Produce for orgo stuff, it's cheaper, faster, better all 'round.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Dan, totally with you. Trader Joe's here, at least, specializes in "value-added" foods, which are semi-prepared so they can be taxed (unlike "raw" groceries). Favorite example: they had over a dozen kinds of fancy pasta sauce and zero kinds of canned tomatoes. So you can, like, MAKE YOUR OWN. Pre-prep stuff is good for tired nights and dinner parties when you need 10 hand-stuffed fish fillets, I guess? But way too expensive for all the time.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:51 (seventeen years ago) link

What on earth are you guys talking about? Nobody goes to Trader Joe's for produce. And everything is CHEAP AS HELL.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:56 (seventeen years ago) link

xp As a consequence, Jewel and Dominick's always seem really huge and weird and Middle American to me.

I had that same feeling going to Dominicks after a few months at Trader Joe's. It was fun to be in a gigantic store with a whole different array of brands.

At Trader Joe's I pretty much get: nuts, carrot juice, pre-prepared chicken breasts w/ lemon, Clif bars, Go Lean. NOT MUCH OF A COOK.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

That surprises me, Eazy.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, here's what I get when I go to Trader Joe's: tortilla chips, salsa, hummus, cheese, orange juice, soy milk, veggie burgers, frozen pizza, soy nuggets, frozen burritos, pasta, pasta sauce, soup, wine, bread, applesauce, baby carrots, maybe some apples or bananas if I'm not planning on going to Harvestime any time soon. These are all pretty much staples for me.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Will wait for Amanda to get here so I have back-up.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd like to cook, but popping a handful of nuts or a Clif Bar and some orange juice always seems to win out.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Or happetizers, of course.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, my mom made some salmon from Trader Joe's last night for dinner, and it was pretty great.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:06 (seventeen years ago) link

True that. I like cooking, but lately heating up a veggie burger is way easier.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't buy any frozen/premade stuff (hummus, salsa, etc), I guess that's the major difference. Well, except for stuff like bread, I can't bake for shit.

I dunno. First and foremost, it's too far away. I don't have to drive to Dominick's if I don't need to, the train goes right there. Second, I don't like the co-op(heh)t-ing of local grocery/health food/etc stores' ethea into some kind of national chain. It is what it is, stop pretending. Third, and semi-related, I like supporting local business. Hence Belmont and/or Stanley's produce markets. Hell, even Dominick's is based here, even if it is in with Safeway or whatever.

And, as I mentioned before, the atmosphere/clientele all moving at 1/4 speed, gabbing on phones and blocking already narrow aisles, makes me want to kill. Grocery rage!

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I like Trader Joe's every once in a while, but I can't imagine doing all of my grocery shopping there. I like it for its weird options. They do not, however, have things like cheap paper towels, Meow Mix original cat food, and light bulbs. Also, I agree that their produce section is really limited, and since I've been trying to cook healthier, I aim to buy less prepared foods. That said, they are great for superquick bring-to-work-&-microwave foods, parties, and the occasional try-something-new meal.

I love Stanleys, but I'm usually lazy and just go to a big store because I want to get all my shopping done at once.

Calico (calico), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I would actually have gotten some things at TJ's that looked good, but considering that I was still going to have to go to a regular grocery store for my staples, it wasn't worth waiting in a line that went all the way around the store and spiraled past the entrance again. Plus people in aisles being MORONS. But I work days -- I think it would be radder if you cd go at like 10am on a Wednesday.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Trader Joes has some excellent stuff. Like the Triple Ginger Cookies, which I think I may owe Julia a whole container of by now.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

True, Laurel.

Oh, I forgot to comment that the employees at TJ's always seem super friendly (and, um, a little high).

Today seems to be going superfast for me, even though I don't have any work to do... weird...

Calico (calico), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:20 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG, Kenan, you are so right on there.

Calico (calico), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not trying to say there aren't worthwhile things there, don't get me wrong. I've driven myself nuts looking for specific items/spices/preserved vegetables (grape leaves spring to mind at the moment) at big stores and specialty shops, and then there's a whole damn shelf of them at TJ's or Whole Foods.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I wish I could afford to only shop at Whole Foods for now on. One of my coworkers does and insists it's no more expensive, but then again she is a richie rich and eats salad EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR BOTH LUNCH AND DINNER.

Calico (calico), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Dan, contrasting Trader Joe's with Stanley's seems weird because isn't Stanley's mostly just a produce market? So you have Stanley's and I have Harvestime for produce. Stanley's is probably better because of all the organic stuff, but otherwise they're both local. (Harvestime is owned by the same people that own Edgewater Produce.)

I've definitely been frustrated at TJ's on a Saturday afternoon when it's crowded, but that's the case at any grocery store during peak hours. And I do appreciate the friendly employees there, as Sarah said.

They do not, however, have things like cheap paper towels, Meow Mix original cat food, and light bulbs

Hmmm, I've gotten paper towels there, and I don't remember them being ridiculously expensive. And yeah, you're not going to be able to find things like light bulbs there, which is why I just go to Ace or CVS if I need something like that right away, or else save up a trip to Target if there are lots of things like that that I need. Trader Joe's is definitely not a one-stop shop, so if you like having a place where you can get all your shopping done, then yeah, TJ's is not that place.

A coworker just wrote me and said she can't get a file to open on her CPU. I don't know why this is so funny to me.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

One of my coworkers does and insists it's no more expensive

Yeah, this is silly. A tub of fresh salsa at Whole Foods is like three times as much as one at TJ's.

I forgot another thing that Whole Foods has that you can't find elsewhere, though: Tofurky deli slices.

Man, those ginger cookies fucking rule.

n/a (n/a), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I actually don't get to hit up Stanley's much any more because it's far away. When I was practically living with my ex-gf and cooking with her a lot I went there all the time. But Belmont produce is right across the street from the Belmont/Kimball Dominick's so that's pretty easy. They have more of a Mexican focus, but it's still good because I cook a lot of that kind of stuff.

I wasn't trying to directly contrast TJ's with Stanley's, necessarily, just kind of rehashing a point from an argument I got into with a friend (which was the genesis of my "are you a yuppie?" question from a few weeks ago) -- that argument being based on my dislike of stores that co-opt a philosophy (say, eating "health" food or living frugally) and turn it into a nation-wide profit maximization venture. To be very honest, I view places like Wal-Mart and TJ's/Whole Foods in the same light because of this, for better or (mostly) worse.

But I'm a cynic... doesn't mean much of anything except to me.

...ok, that joke is getting tired.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Places I go every week:
Dom's (for basics - usually don't buy much outside of beans, canned tomatoes, lunch meat from deli and beer)
Ro-Pa Fruit Market (for fruit/veg/tortillas,etc.)

Places I go 2x/month:
Trader Joe's for frozen shit, including fish, which is indeed cheaper there than anywhere else. Other things I get there include: dried fruits/nuts, cereal, coffee, wine (DUH), stuff for Dan to make when I'm not there, applesauce, mochi, various other things, including meat which is of a higher quality and cheaper than I could get elsewhere. Oh, and CHEESE. Their cheese section rules.

Places I go once a month or so:
Golden Palace (Asian market that Kenan mentioned) which is great for noodles, sauces, odd produce and giant frozen fishes

And the Spice House for spices.

I do spend a lot of time grocery shopping and cooking, but it makes me happy and I guess that's something I do for "fun."

One place I never go is Whole Foods. Too expensive.

The end.

cereal

How could I forget cereal! That's also a staple. Nature's Path 4-EVA.

And the Spice House for spices.

I meant to tell you, Amanda, I went there for the first time on Saturday. OMG. I bought some cinnamon. Kr bought about $35 worth of various spices and things like "orange flower water." I can't believe I'd never been there before, esp. since the Evanston store was two blocks away from my last job.

We also checked out House of Glunz, the 119-year-old wine store on Division/Wells while we were at it. This was on the recommendation of EZ from an archived Chicago thread.

Armando Grouse (Armando ), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I have orange flower water too. And rose water for the baklava I have yet to attempt. I'm sort of scared because of all of the butter called for in the recipes I found. Truly staggering amounts of butter. I used the orange flower water in cookies once. It was good.
