I kind of get the feeling someone was hoping Catherine O'Hara would get Oscar nominated for her part in this movie, it will be funnier when she doesn't.

Yeah, I can't imagine doing this. Then again, I don't have the luxury to do this with new releases like MR. FILM CRITIC over here.

If it's good enough for Farber, it's good enough for me.

Anyway, it's not like we're talking about Lynch here. This is pretty much artless Academy-bait here.

this is cutty (mcutt), Monday, 27 November 2006 21:10 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, I'd stop Lost Highway frequently. I didn't know Manny F did that, but he IS 90 years old!

The novel Little Children ain't bad, but I'm not surprised Todd Field blew it up to Oscarbait.

I don't know where to read Mr. Film Critic these days.

deep space nine (deep space nine), Monday, 27 November 2006 21:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Little Children and Half Nelson will both prob be in my top 10 this year, with the latter near the very top.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 November 2006 21:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I picked up Bringing Up Baby at Tower and it's not quite as good as I remembered (or My Cousin Vinny), but maybe it's just the ownership effect. Silver City did its predictable (though rapidly diminishing) Sayles sense-of-place thing on me, and Chris Cooper's Bush impression was tiresome for as long as I resisted compartmentalizing it (not too long), but Danny Huston was novel enough, the costumes ruled most movies, and the girls were pretty in a very uncinematic way.

nuneb (nuneb), Monday, 27 November 2006 22:30 (seventeen years ago) link

deep space nine (deep space nine), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 01:14 (seventeen years ago) link

i'd take those movies over the da vinci code. which no one should ever have to watch. don't even start watching it and start ffwding and stopping and ffwding again to the main ian mckellan bit, which is okay b/c of him, and then ffwding again because there is nothing to ffwd to. i think it contributed to my crappy do-nothing mood of last week.

saw some good shorts at resfest on friday though (these were them - the thing about shorts is that even if they're great, they're not exactly well-advertised or well-distributed :( i guess youtube is helping though.

Amelie was pretty hot whilst threatening the albino, the only not-bad thing about it aside from McKellen.

But even the movie isn't as bad as the newish pre-movie commercials they're running where Ron Howard talks about all the deep, hidden symbols they introduced into the movie, illustrated by random flashes of gold accent. Apparently one of the airline logos was meant to help you unlock the mystery of Mary's cooch.

I'll give you Nelson, jmc, but the pool scene in Little Children was the last straw on that one.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 02:12 (seventeen years ago) link

The pool scene was masterful.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 06:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Too bad Gosling's long-"deserved" hype had to wait for a condescending liberal b.s. vehicle to be birthed (I'll stick with the Jewish Nazi movie & The Slaughter Rule).

I watched The Faculty a few months ago at my parents house, the description listed Clea Duvall and Josh Hartnett in the "starring" thing, it was a fairly pleasant shock to find Frodo Baggins, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart, Jean Grae, etc etc in it. A fun stupid movie!

Why does the presence of Jackie Earle Haley negate the brilliance of the setpiece in Little Children?
