Smyllie, encouraged no doubt by the rising circulation, gave O’Brien his own column on the strength of the letters controversy (which he himself even joined in).

this morning f. was walking our dog and he saw this mean neighbour of ours and her terrible little angry dog and the dog was jumping up at f. and she said, 'it's because you're eating a banana, he loves bananas, can he have a bit,' so f. broke a piece off and the dog scarfed it down and then the neighbour lady suddenly lunged at the banana and dug her fingers right into it to get more for her dog. f. was taken aback, he threw the rest of it in the trash.
