I apparently don't know anything about popular music.

That's just false. I had totally forgotten about "Do Wah Diddy".

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Doesn't look familiar, but I kind of love those lyrics.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, Kenan, but "Earth Band"??

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm trying to remember one of the tunes we played on Friday night. It's an oldie/r&b tune, with a backbeat, and it wasn't 'My Girl' (although we played that too). We hadn't played the tune in years and I don't really know the original. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I felt dumb on Friday when I thought that "Just the Two of Us" was a Will Smith original.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm listening to this "Earth Band" version of "Blinded by the Light" and it sounds only vaguely familiar.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Will Smith did 'Just the Two of Us'? I don't even remember that.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:35 (seventeen years ago) link

He sang it with his wee son.

Calico (calico), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

LOL, not because you felt dumb, but just because this is a very jaymc thing to say and I like it.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, I was grooving to it, and Kenan said "Wait, what is this?" and I said "'Just the Two of Us'! The Will Smith song!" And Kenan said, "You mean Grover Washington Jr. and Bill Withers." And I said, "Well, yeah," even though that was totally news to me.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I never knew that was Bill Withers with Grover W.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I love me some Bill Withers.

JordanC (JordanC), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah I couldn't have named who did the tune either, just knew it was a classic.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Me either.

Calico (calico), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, a wedding staple. Nick and Sarah, take note.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Totally. You guys should check out the original recording, it's badass.

I think my iPod has finally passed away. It lasted a good, I don't know, 3 years at least.

I have a crush of shame on this record. The cover reveals exactly what you will find inside.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love" sounds very similar and is one of the best songs ever. But it's a little more suffering and a little less babymaking.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I love how all those records sound, all that warm bass and rhodes and great-sounding drums. I heard that BC played most of the instruments on his record too?

(the band uses WYWDFL as a background a lot btw)

Woah, dude's white!

Woah, Boyz II Men cover it too!

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I know, I was shocked when I first found out that he's white!

Right, and until a couple months ago, I assumed that this was a Go West original.

OTM! In fact, one of my childhood memories of the GWJr record is its being used in a TV commercial for a local stereo shop, with slow pans across lcd meters and unnecessary knobs and faux-mahogany speakers. Mmmm. Smooth.

I worked with a woman who didn't know that Rick Astley was white until she saw him in concert (she was a radio and not an MTV/VH-1 person). She's the same one who gave me a Toni Braxton CD (the one with 'Unchain My Heart') because she ordered it and then couldn't wait to have it so went out and bought another copy.

Who is GoWest?

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey I just posted a record on the blog that I was sending to a friend. I've mentioned it here before, but figured some of you all might be interested... it's that 120 Days album.

Also, since when do you have to enter a Google password when signing into blogger? I hope I didn't reset the blog login/pwd...

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I love Bill Withers. Looooooove.

Handgun O. Mendocino (pullapartgirl), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Deniece Williams' first record falls squarely into this sound too, I love it.

Did you just time-travel from December?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Who is GoWest?

Smooth-jazz staple of the late 80s/early 90s. Most famous for "King of Wishful Thinking," from the Pretty Woman soundtrack, which went top 10 in 1990.

I mean November.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I know, I know.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought maybe someone would like it, and I hate to put a good YSI to waste!

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay! I just know because I downloaded it back then and really like it!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:22 (seventeen years ago) link

JT has a very Bobby Caldwell look to him, or at least he seems to move around the same way. Am I crazy or AMIRITE?

Calico (calico), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:22 (seventeen years ago) link

(Where by JT I mean Justin Timberlake)

Calico (calico), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I will download 120 Days when I get home. Will it be good for the gym?

I love "King of Wishful Thinking"!

n/a (n/a), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:30 (seventeen years ago) link

It should be decent for the gym. Most of the songs are pretty upbeat.

I confess to liking "King of Wishful Thinking" too. I was obsessed with it for a period of time right when it came out.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Do you guys remember this song, from around the same time as "King of Wishful Thinking"? It would've been played on NBC's Saturday Morning Videos alongside Nelson's "After the Rain" and Poison's "Unskinny Bop."

ha! me, too. it's heartening that that was common.

xpost omg of course I remember "She Ain't Worth It" and the video. furthermore, it's now in my head. also: "Unskinny Bop"!

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:41 (seventeen years ago) link

1990 was the first year that I paid attention to pop music. Suddenly getting flashbacks to all those Wilson Phillips song and "Close to You" by Maxi Priest and Phil Collins's "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't remember "She Ain't Worth It." But I do remember being too scared to ask Amy Gunnett to dance to "Back to Life" by Soul II Soul at a school dance and being really sad after I got home, probably circa 1990.

n/a (n/a), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Enh, she wasn't worth it, Nick.

danno martinez (danno martinez), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Probably not. She moved to another school and some kids from my school went to a track meet or something there and said she turned into a real beeotch.

n/a (n/a), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

BUT THAT SONG IS SUCH A CLASSIC! Any missed opportunity to dance to it is sad.

teasing your poultry (kenan), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I will dance to it at my wedding and cry sweet tears of revenge.

n/a (n/a), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Though not really deserved revenge, since she didn't turn me down or anything, since I just wussed out.

n/a (n/a), Monday, 19 February 2007 17:54 (seventeen years ago) link

It really is pissing me off that YouTube is removing copyrighted material! That was where I would go when I wanted to listen to music!!

Also, they deleted Rich/FourFour's account permanently -- without warning -- for putting up copyrighted material. And he had some fun stuff on there.

A picture of Rich, because he's adorable.
