no offense, tom, this is pretty fly to finally see since people have been clamoring for it since forever.

Sure, some folks have enough self-control to ignore these posts, but the very reason people use killfiles in the first place is that they LACK sufficient self-control to human-ignore the primary objects of their irritation.

And some people lack sufficient self-control to ignore the people who want to ignore or to make people want to ignore them in the first place.

TEARS OF ANGUISH here...

I feel like bill gates getting all these kudos just for writing a how-to based on other peoples' code!

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 18:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Everyone giving Tombot those kudos is a bit like Bill Gates getting congratulated for writing a how-to based on other people's code! That's what i think anyway.

Sure, some folks have enough self-control to ignore these posts, but the very reason people use killfiles in the first place is that they LACK sufficient self-control to human-ignore the primary objects of their irritation.

That's only partially true. I personally used the killfile on two people: one who goes out of their way to start shit with me and friends of mine, and another who actually repulses me with the things he says. I've human-ignored the latter forever now; it's just nice to get rid of him. The former is extremely difficult to just ignore after a while. Using it makes my experience on ILX a lot better. I'm sure you are right in some cases, but it's rather insulting and precious to go around making that assumption.

or what steve said, I guess! ie ignoring someone who doesn't have the ability to ignore YOU just existing makes it a helluva lot easier to read some threads!

jw (ex machina), Thursday, 15 February 2007 18:52 (seventeen years ago) link

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic. The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute. Hoping to resolve the matter with a blockade of deadly battleships, the greedy Trade Federation has stopped all shipping to the small planet of Naboo. While the Congress of the Republic endlessly debates this alarming chain of events, the Supreme Chancellor has secretly dispatched two Jedi Knights, the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, to settle the conflict...

Queen Amidala: Although we do not always agree, Your Honor, our two great societies have always lived in peace. The Trade Federation has destroyed all that we have worked so hard to build. If we do not act quickly, all will be lost forever. I ask you to help us... no, I beg you to help us.

Queen Amidala: We are your humble servants.

Human-ignore isn't 100% fool (i.e. ILXoR) proof because how many of us are driven mad by someone but still we submit to the sweet torture of reading their posts?

Anakin Skywalker: He won't give up his power. I just learned the terrible truth. I think Chancellor Palpatine is a Sith Lord.
Mace Windu: A Sith Lord?
Anakin Skywalker: Yes, the one we've been looking for.
Mace Windu: How do you know this?
Anakin Skywalker: He knows the ways of the Force. He's been trained to use the Dark Side.
Mace Windu: Are you sure?
Anakin Skywalker: Absolutely.
Mace Windu: Then our worst fears have been realized. We must move quickly if the Jedi Order is to survive.

get your letter cases right

Ah. This may be the answer.

Killfiles are tools imo, similar to settings like "Don't show images". It's easy enough to read the posts if you want, and with Andrew's script, you see which ignored user made the missing post.

In theory I could have multiple killfiles named after different users and I could check or uncheck individuals as necessary , right?

hot tip: killfiling ned speeds up load times by 37%

^@^ (map), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:18 (seventeen years ago) link

fluffy: yes. you could also have multiple killfiles for different users and be thread-specific in the "Included Pages" list. Probably easier to edit that one time per thread than keep turning users on and off!

TOMB07 (trm), Thursday, 15 February 2007 19:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Tom, I went back to Andrew's script, looked at it for a second, slapped myself in the head, and removed the // from the front of the ignoreUser line. Jaq was my test-killee (pretty impossible to misspell) and it worked. But now I've gone back to it to try to kill GZeus's current screen name, and it won't work again, either with spaces or with plus signs in place of the spaces.

Actually I was just wondering how quickly I could read ILX if I kilxor'd Ned, Ally, kate, jaymc, etc.

RH, that was one that gave me fits on ole-ILX. Tried it with spaces and +s and eventually made it the first one on the list, which (maybe coincidentally or maybe because of the case issue) worked.
