I think it's unfair that Shareeka Epps is stealing all the acclaim when Dakota Fanning has spent all this time paying her dues and has a plum role in this holiday season's gift to moviegoers called Charlotte's Web. Don't let us down, Screen Actors Guild!

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut

Is this commercially available?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:08 (seventeen years ago) link

the education of shelby knox (bad)
Hustle & Flow director, right? Is it out in theatres, or did it just get dumped to DVD?

milo (milo), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Donner cut is out on DVD today.

You must be thinking of Black Snake Moan? Education is a documentary about a girl in Texas fighting for sex ed in the schools.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Is this commercially available?

Just released today. The first 45 minutes contain new sequences and eliminated others (the Eiffel Tower scenes, Lois Lane hurling herself into the river). Brando is back as Jor-El. The trouble: Donner, annoyed with The Director (he won't even mention Lester by name)'s "corny" humor, substituted purportedly serious sequences which dissolve into camp.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought that I read that the Donner Cut has screen tests in place of a few scenes that were never filmed. Is that true?

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:40 (seventeen years ago) link

i like movies set in schools!!

history boys was ok

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:43 (seventeen years ago) link

but do you like school of rock and do you find it to be "convincing"

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 23:56 (seventeen years ago) link

yes. i forgot i was watching a movie. i was there.

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 00:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought that I read that the Donner Cut has screen tests in place of a few scenes that were never filmed. Is that true?

Yup. And Margot Kidder looks quite obviously younger in some sequences.

OK, this sucked for the most part. I'm ashamed that this is promoted as the definitive version.

Missing: the Eiffel Tower, conquest of the small town, and Fortress of Solitude battle sequences.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 00:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Even worse: Donner uses THE EXACT SAME TIME REVERSAL GIMMICK USED IN THE FIRST FILM to wipe Lois' memory. The Superkiss of Forgetfulness in the office -- and Kidder's wonderful enactment of torment preceding it (she reminds Superman that she has to see him in the office every day as Clark) -- are gone.

OMG RICHARD "DOWNER"

this is cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 01:35 (seventeen years ago) link

does he use the exact same footage of superman spinning around the earth's orbit from the first film?

cause if so, that is perhaps amazing?

milton parker (milton parker), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 01:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Perhaps. But it isn't.

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 02:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Dirty Ho was good. Some LOLs.

ian (orion), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 03:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Lots of giggles, anyway. Interesting to see how fighting scenes have changed, how shocking new styles/moves might have been when they were first seen.

no direction home - needs a lot of editing? interviews got booooring

some kind of monster - lol @ aging wusses. best wtf moment courtesy dave mustaine

Go figger, the one I don't watch piecemeal, Flags of Our Fathers, has already been pre-chewed into bite-sized bits.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 06:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm ashamed that [Donner Supe2] is promoted as the definitive version.

No need for shame unless yr involved in the marketing.

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 14:26 (seventeen years ago) link

the proposition - the part where ray winstone awakes freaked-out to gunfire and crashes into his bedroom door had me believing that it could be great, but it wasn't, it was good. there was only one part where the nick cave music got really bad but then someone cocked a shotgun and it was over. the cast was sweet and the ending kinda bothered me as it would've been a whole lot more compelling had they made emily watson's character a little more culpable. i like that guy pearce guy, he's good at staggering around looking confused.

The Supes II small town scene was super-shitty. I'm not a fan of old Supes II, tho. Or Donner. But I'm sorta stoked for nu-Supes II. Because I'm stupid.

David RER (Frank Fiore), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 15:51 (seventeen years ago) link

as long as "no, Jor-El the baseball player" is still in

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Do DVDs of not-movies count? Season 1 of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I'm not entirely sure if I love it or hate it.

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:32 (seventeen years ago) link

So is, "What do I get for my triple threat, huh? `Bow, yield, kneel!' That kind of stuff closes out of town."

Alfred Soto (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Nklshs -- once CYE starts developing narrative arcs in S2, it gets better.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

the latter part of the proposition really frustrated me. ray winstone's character really fizzled out, and yeah - emily watson needed something else. she's such a strong actress, but her character was so wan.

Lauren (lauren), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:39 (seventeen years ago) link

My favorite episode of CYE so far was when they went to the party at Bob Odenkirk's house and he went on that rant that ended with the Tabasco finger up his ass, and LD had to do a double goodbye.

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

do DVDs of not-movies count?

They don't, but I just saw the first half-season of "Deadwood" and was generally pleased, tho it's nowhere as subversive as many anti-westerns of the '60s/'70s (including Blazing Saddles).

Bill Weber (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:55 (seventeen years ago) link

CYE is DEFINITELY NOT cinema

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:56 (seventeen years ago) link

drunk Friendster massage (nklshs), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:57 (seventeen years ago) link

**********************SPOILERS - THE PROPOSITION**********************************

when evil brother and sidekick showed up @ ray and emily's house i was like that's kinda heavy they're taking revenge for the younger brother's death, blaming it on ray when it was really emily's fault. then it turned out they didn't even know he died so it was just a big ray fucked up even that dandy douche was right sort of thing.

Satantango

NOT YET RELEASED
: - Release date to be announced, Order Now!

argh, was supposed to be november 28

v (sleep), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

is it the same company who released a real crappy-lookin Werckmeister Harmonies DVD?

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Even I would prob. watch Satantango piecemeal.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Slocki, the good thing about the narrative arcs is that it prevents each episode of CYE from being the exact same as the one before it. Toward the end of S1, I was getting tired of the formula, but the arcs gave each new episode a purpose.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:38 (seventeen years ago) link

a break or two in a 3-to-14-hr film is not piecemeal

Dr M (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:39 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost to morbs
yes, facets

artificial eye released a better version this month, but it's region 2 and i haven't got a region free player. also it's PAL which means playback is a little faster than it should be, i think

jaymc, yeah it comes on 3 dvds so i think piecemeal will be really tempting about 5 hours in

v (sleep), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:42 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, true. i find CYE best in spread-out chunks, though; i can't watch 10 episodes of it in a row like i can with other shows.

hank s1ockli (hanks1ockli), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 17:49 (seventeen years ago) link

oh dudez I just saw the best show ever it's called ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and I can't believe we're not talking about it IT'S SO GOOD*

* = yes, I liked it much; no, I'm not serious.

more re: the propostion:

i was also really disappointed at the lack of interaction between evil brother and ray winstone. that could have been fireworks!

one thing that did not disappoint was the graphic flogging scene. the story i read was that passion of the christ came out while nick cave was doing re-writes and he decided that he needed to top its flogging.

Lauren (lauren), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 18:14 (seventeen years ago) link
