Of course I'd probably have still gone if it was merely ONE song back then, but it would have been nice to know in advance!

Melvins/Fantomas Big Band, Victoriaville 2003. It was probably more than 5 songs, but they wrapped it after 35-40 minutes. The cheers turned to boos REAL quicklike.

Guitar Wolf, Oxford, MS. They didn't go on until about 20 minutes before the place had to close. (The language barrier and them not understanding that the place had to close at midnight was presented as the cause of the hassle, but I'm not convinced.) More boos.

Bill Frisell with Brian Blades, Greg Leisz, and Greg Cohen, I think? Charged like 35 bucks--which when you're fresh in college, is lots of moolah. Greatest set I've ever heard, but it was like 40 minutes! Granted, I think every song was in the same open tuning and key, so maybe it's not so bad that it wasn't twice as long. Nonetheless, they didn't encore, and then did another set in like an hour that lasted, reputedly, even shorter. Perhaps they thought that the audience would assume it was a BlueNote/Village gig, but it wasn't! It was in a Texas bar--damn!

I'm sure when I saw Orange Juice they played about for 25 minutes, which would have been nowhere near long enough but I seem to remember everyone expecting it to be about that long and so we were happy.

This was probably in about 1980 or 1981 so forgive me if my memory has failed me.

When I saw Caspar Brötzmann Massaker they played four songs in 45 minutes. Same deal with Khanate, though they only stopped because Plotkin's amp blew up.

Closest thing I can think of is The Juan Maclean.

arrived like 15 minutes late, expecting not to miss anything, and after like 3 and a half songs in (and incredible it most certainly was) over, just like that.

1986, Jesus and Mary Chain. Exactly five songs, fifteen minutes, for fifteen bucks.

I saw the Mary Chain in Glasgow early that year and they played 9 or 10 songs - which was something of a pleasant surprise.
