Ableton Live "groove" functionality is shit

So I'm noticing that the timing of the swing in Live (5.1) is really crap! I can't get anything to sound properly shuffled, it's either big band OTT doo-di-doo-di-doo-di or not there at all.

Is this just what happens when you switch from hardware (yamaha sequencer) to software? Is the timing on shuffle a known issue with Ableton, and what the fuck am I supposed to do to get a nice subtle delay on my dotted-8th+16ths?

to the right if the thing saying 4/4 (or whatever) is a number, this is the "global groove". try adjusting that (to 20 maybe?).
or if you like fannying around : record midi stuff, quantize, then switch the fixed grid off & move stuff around freehand until you've got it sounding the way you want.

this seems as good a place as any:

is there a preferred piece of hardware for all of Live's knob twiddling?

Yes, the Monodeck.

Monodeck II is not for sale nor will it see mass production.

I have awe. I can't solder a bead smaller than a prize shooter, much less create a custom MIDI controller that not only works, but looks good on the job.

Oddly enough, staying here I saw seven golden bowls make cakes and religion (goo, Saturday, 16 December 2006 02:32 (seventeen years ago) link

holy shit that thing is awesome

zappi: I know that much, I just can't seem to find a happy medium between the under-25's and the over-25's and the swing 8 vs. swing 16 etc. fannying around is something I really believe I shouldn't have to do in this day and age. Maybe I'd be better off resampling shit and doing it with the fucking Warp markers. Ugh.

try just shuffling the hi hats and not the rest of the drums.

That might do it but I want, like, a little 8th swing and a little 16th swing too. Maybe I should shuffle TWO sets of hi-hats. Ah fuck it.

Does Ableton now come bundled with sampler software?

no you have to pay for it as an extra like operator, also I'm pretty sure you still need Audacity or summat for most soundfile editing functions
