Was John Lennon on "Fame"? Also, I never really thought of it as a James Brownish thing - only inasmuch as all funk is.

Not For Use as Infant Nog (A-Ron Hubbard), Tuesday, 26 December 2006 23:09 (seventeen years ago) link

it directly rips a james track - or maybe vice versa. i can't remember exactly - he talks about it in his autobiog, which makes me thinks the rip was probably from james, rather than by him. i think the track is on Star Time.

a - Yes, he was.

b - Try listening to "Hot (I Need to be Loved Loved Loved Loved Loved)" sometime.

crosspost - and I believe this is one of those rare occassions where the imitator (Bowie/Lennon) did it first and the originator (JB) jacked the song that jacked his style.

Coldcut's "The Payback Mix". (A label-approved "megamix".)

Best memory of this track: I was dancing at a filthy warehouse party back in 1995 (raves, they called them), and the DJ switched from a jungle set into downtempo with this track. You'd have thought Jesus himself had taken over the turntables.

"Hot (I Need to Be Loved, Loved, Loved)" ripped off "Fame," not the other way around.

haha xpost, should've read more clearly.

7,999,999,984 "Jimmy's Rap" from Dreamgirls. This was already a JB homage in 1981, when the musical was on Broadway, but having Eddie Murphy play the James Early role in the movie does not hurt the comparison on little bit.

7,999,999,993 Wu Tang Clan "C.R.E.A.M."

This is actually a Stax and/or Isaac Hayes imitation/plagiarization/influence/sample/ripoff/etc. Which I guess would make it a secondhand cousin.

7,999,999,978 Lexington, KY native Henry Earl, who, until his recent notoriety, was known around town as "James Brown"

7,999,999,991 the only interesting and listenable part of Fergie - "Fergalicious"

Uh, firstly, HUGE slap in the face to Kraftwerk, and secondly, the sample of both James Brown and Kraftwerk are secondhand. That whole Fergie song is simply Afro-Rican's Give it All You Got:

http://www.discogs.com/release/80132

Which is one of the all time greatest Miami Bass songs ever. That Fergie track even sample MD Rock's cuts...

Prince - Sexy MF
