i saw it on a bedspread in a rest home when visiting a tiny hollow-eyed woman who had to have daily dialysis for hours on end. she was an elderly friend of an elderly friend of mine, and my friend asked me to drive her there because she'd had to quit driving because her eyesight was failing. i was relieved she'd stopped because the last time i'd seen her drive i had a vision of her being one of those octogenarian drivers who accidentally plough into a crowd of people at a farmer's market. 'god, look at what it's come to,' the woman said, and she pulled a soft focus head shot photo of herself out of her bedside drawer to show us she had once been pretty. then she said she was stopping dialysis at the end of that week because it was too miserable and that she would die within days (which she did). the nurses had said that once she stopped dialysis she could stop watching her diet and eat as many oysters as she liked. she said it was going to cost them a fortune.so this colour makes me think of hot rooms and plastic water jugs and blue vinyl chairs and long grey corridors with scuffed linoleum and small televisions mounted on ceilings and delicate ladies holding hands bravely while they say goodbye.

that made me cry, for real.
i'm glad the dear lady had a nice colored bedspread. i hope she had one million million oysters in her last days, the rotten old thing.
