three weeks pass...

as of this morning i have got parsley, cilantro and basil growing in pots in the little courtyard outside my kitchen door.

my 3 faves on those semi-rare occasions when i pretend to be a serious cook

t. silaviver, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 06:24 (twelve years ago) link

i hardly bother with any of the others.

i like cooking and i cook often and i cook well but i don't cook very fancily, i mostly like food that is simple but well-prepared.

estela, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 07:10 (twelve years ago) link

i only eat elaborate poorly prepared foods

spite n ease (harbl), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

lxy, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

a heavy cold rain has been battering my herbs. the parsley and basil are still bouncy but the coriander is in a slump.

estela, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

Parsley and cilantro are both disgusting savages

smoove operator, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 01:09 (twelve years ago) link

estela, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 03:06 (twelve years ago) link

i make a pretty awesome lentil soup with cilantro, meyer lemon & cayenne pepper

t. silaviver, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 05:23 (twelve years ago) link

smoove otm

lentils too imo

mookieproof, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 05:59 (twelve years ago) link

i love lentils and i would like to have that soup recipe if it's not a bother.

estela, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 06:06 (twelve years ago) link

my variations from the recipe

instead of the yogurt i add meyer lemon
i often do half red lentils, half brown
instead of chopped onion, i do a whole shallot

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/18/health/nutrition/18recipehealth.html?_r=1&emc=eta1

t. silaviver, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 06:19 (twelve years ago) link

oh yeah i skip the puree, totally unnecessary especially if you use red lentils

t. silaviver, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 06:22 (twelve years ago) link

thanks, that looks really good.

if it plays its cards right it could become the official sandbox cookbook.

estela, Monday, 4 June 2012 01:41 (twelve years ago) link

i'm going to make t.s's lentil soup this week. sadly without meyer lemon though because they're not available here. i wish they were. t.s, would regular lemon be a terrible letdown?

estela, Monday, 4 June 2012 01:46 (twelve years ago) link

i tsked my tongue at lxy's tongue twister.

estela, Monday, 4 June 2012 01:47 (twelve years ago) link

i wonder what kind of cards that cookbook is holding

does it know how to play bridge?

mookieproof, Monday, 4 June 2012 02:17 (twelve years ago) link

estela, plain ol' lemon will do just fine, there was a restaurant in nyc while i still lived there that introduced me to the magic of lemon added to lentil soup and i believe they just used your everyday lemon. meyer lemon has a very tangy & sweet orange-like flavor that really interacts with the cayenne in an ideal way but i can't always get meyer lemon so i make do and it still tastes awesome.

t. silaviver, Monday, 4 June 2012 05:36 (twelve years ago) link

this was good http://www.publicradio.org/columns/splendid-table/recipes/soup_corianderlentil.html
there is a lemony lentil-spinach soup in claudia roden middle east book too

spite n ease (harbl), Monday, 4 June 2012 11:15 (twelve years ago) link

thanks xp, i'll use regular ones, but i do love meyer lemons and wish they sold them here.

that looks good too, harbl.

estela, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 00:39 (twelve years ago) link

i hope that book can't play bridge because i can't and i think i never will.

when my sister and i were teenagers we went to stay with our excellent elderly aunts for a week and they taught us 500 and gin rummy and then made us go and play in a local gin rummy tournament in a freezing country hall with them (where an old man shouted 'my goodness those two girls laugh a lot' and someone pointed out to him that our aunts were known for this also and then he said he hadn't realised we were with them and that he wasn't complaining anyway just making an observation) and we didn't disgrace our aunts who had been a bit worried about how we'd go and then when our holiday was over they gave us a pack of cards for our long journey home (a train, a ferry and another train) and by the time we got to the ferry we were fuzzy on the rules again and we had a bitchy row about it so in the interests of harmony we threw the pack of cards over the railing into cook strait and we have never played again.

it rained and rained and the cilantro died before i could make the lentil soup but it was sunny yesterday and today and there are some small straggly new shoots coming through. the parsley and basil are thriving though, in fact they have a virtuous ironman giving it 110% air about them that is making it difficult for me to like them.

estela, Monday, 18 June 2012 13:18 (twelve years ago) link
