jonathan franzen in the new yorker:

The week before, when I'd arrived in Shanghai, my first impression of China had been that it was the most advanced place I'd ever seen. The scale of Shanghai, which from the sky had presented a dead-flat vista of tens of thousands of neatly arrayed oblong houses--each of which, a closer look revealed, was in fact a large apartment block--and then, on the ground, the brutally new skyscrapers and the pedestrian-hostile streets and the artificial dusk of the smoke-filled winter sky: it was all thrilling. It was as if the gods of world history had asked, "Does somebody want to get into some really unprecedentedly deep shit?" and this place had raised its hand and said, "Yeah!"

maybe crosspost this with the uhh thread:

There are mixers and then there are mixers. When you combine Shanghai’s most active international expat forum with a world-class nightclub full of some of the hottest international DJ talent around today, with an open bar that runs until 4:30 AM... Now that’s what we call a mixer! hosts a weekly mixer/meetup each Friday night at Club Bonbon, and believe us, it is the kind of mixer where you actually meetup and party down -- nametags/stickers are entirely optional!

It’s a simple, yet effective formula for fun, and for the past month Club Bonbon has been blowing up the Shanghai party scene with incredible Open Bar club nights. Bonbon has 2 areas, the main room which on Fridays hosts international headline DJs such as Canadian Richie Hawtin, Norman Jay, Hed Kandi DJ David Dunne. Last week UK guest DJ Mike Monday was in town and dropped an incredible set to a packed house of party people. Dj/Remix duo of the moment Lee-Cabrerra is in town this Friday 10/20 and NuYorican Soul/Masters at Work legendary DJ Kenny “Dope” Gonzales plays Friday 10/27!

Behind the Black Curtains!

The Main Room the DJ booth is flanked on both sides by passageways to Bonbon’s Ice Dome -- It is an entirely different area with its own open bar, tables (reserved for, DJ booth, and dance floor! gets down and dangerous in the back room, at the Ice Dome, where it is a bit easier to sit, move and chat with others, so make your way to the back, behind the black curtains, you won’t regret it... Club Bonbon, it’s the Friday night designated mixer/meetup nightspot.

Shanghai, Shanghai
(Yahoo! Maps, Google Maps)

Chinese Super League action.

Please note, exact kick-off times are liable to change. Check the club website at for confirmation just before match day. The official site is in Chinese but the next match details are on the front page and the match time is in 24-hour format and easy to spot.

Take line 3 or line 8 metro to Hongkou Football Stadium Station, then head toward the huge bowl-like structure dominating the neighbourhood.

Usually there are plenty available from scalpers on the streets - only the biggest games, against Beijing, Dalian or Shandong may sell out, and even then there's usually tickets still available. You'll be approached several times on the way to the ground, so if you can't get one for 30rmb or less from the first guys you meet, walk away and try your luck with the next sellers. If you are late and the game has already kicked off, you can get them much cheaper, below 20rmb in some cases.

jergins, Saturday, 5 July 2008 11:22 (twelve years ago) link

i am not a man prone to grand statements (no, really), but that was the single worst cabride of my life last night.

i didn't think i was going to die but i was sure there'd be an accident and recriminations and somehow we'd be blamed, because we'd never have gone on that route had it not been for our destination. i could see the cabbie and cops yelling, the other driver irate because it was our driver's fault.

then we tipped him, 2 fucking dollars, just to get out of the car on the wrong side of the river.

jergins, Saturday, 5 July 2008 11:25 (twelve years ago) link

never have gone on that route

we'd never have gone on that route if i'd been driving. how can i know the city better, after a week, than this fool?

amon, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:38 (twelve years ago) link

china's was fine, it was canada that fucked me like usual. ever since i got strip-searched and rejected at the quebec border in 2000 i've been on their equivalent of a no-fly list or something. in vancouver i ended up in the secondary customs/immigration line. the place was some kind of sad 21st century ellis island. what a beleagured batch of humanity: the saudi trader under immediate suspicion, the mexicans who had never left mexico, happening to take a vacation in BC, arab families, overseas chinese with no english, their child speaking for them. i overheard some shit, security to security "Where you have him now?" "He's in the fishbowl" i mean wtf canada i hate u most when you seem like the usa. my wait in line was nearly two hours, just standing there, jetlagged, knowing i'd done nothing wrong. fuck you canada i won't go back you fucking dicks.

amon, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

cicadas are banhammered

haha no we have our very own airport here. it's just how the tickets worked out that j. flew sea > b.c. > shanghai, whereas i flew sea > tokyo > shanghai. my experience w/ immigration was not so awful as his, proving that sometimes canada is more american than than america is.

lxy, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

i talked to serenity today. until a few weeks ago her parents lived on a golf course in a gated community in far pudong out to the east.

i guess their new building is all chinese, except for them, and close-in.

she actually said "when i get to the airport i'm so happy to see a white person." um ok. all the white people in line were totally fucking annoying except for the one cute canadian. i liked the chinese more!

jergins, Friday, 11 July 2008 23:19 (twelve years ago) link

that's pretty uhh. not only the white people in line but every where else too, pretty much. the blacks in china seemed okay, though.

"And finally, there’s the stinky tofu. Wafting down every alley and byway in Taipei is the unmistakable and often appalling odor of this unusual food. The grilled sausages and squid, with their smoke and flame, are the most visible street food in Taipei, but they are not the most aromatic.

The effect of stinky tofu on Westerners is a universal wrinkling of the nose, such as a Chinese person might feel after stumbling into a cheese factory. Summoning up some courage, I ate a piece of stinky tofu, albeit well-smothered in soy, vinegar, garlic and chili sauce. It has a sharp flavour, not at all similar to the smell. And how does it taste? You won’t know until you give it a try." so says
