― gr8090, Saturday, 29 November 2008 04:40 (fifteen years ago) link
hihi sorry i haven't seen it yet but i really want to because they were at mcmurdo for some of iti knew a lot of people that described themselves as lifers--either had been going down for years or intended to.if you went down with a s.o. it could be the life: work 5 months of the year and kick it for 7. people i knew bought houses in NZ and stayed there and then headed down to the ice.if you weren't going down with a loved one it'd be much more difficult. have to share a room with some dude half of every year.partof me would like to go back but part of me knows it'll never happen.will seee it though!
― jergins, Saturday, 29 November 2008 07:00 (fifteen years ago) link
(the point about the lifers makes me think i would know some of the people in it)

oh whoa. i was going to post about how Henry Kaiser http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Kaiser_(musician) was there the year i was and how he was big shit around town and wow he won a emmy or grammy and all the musicians wanted to play with him. then i was going to make some jokes about how he made a recording of rubbing his guitar against the south pole (even though i've never heard it, still, it's funny, rubbing against the pole) only to find out that he did some of the soundtrack and camera work for the herzog movie. it's a small world after all.
Herzog was drawn to Antarctica after viewing underwater footage filmed by Henry Kaiser. Kaiser was working on music for Herzog's Grizzly Man and was showing the footage to a friend when Herzog noticed it.[3] Kaiser had been to Antarctica on scientific diving expeditions, as well as with the National Science Foundation's Antarctic Artists and Writers Program for his "Slide Guitar Around the World" project.[4] Within two years, Herzog had released The Wild Blue Yonder, which made prominent use of Kaiser's footage.

this was really nice of you, and funny:
it's weird that i would have heard these stories and you haven't. anyway, this is what i've gathered: ghosts of lawyers past visit people who are about to take the bar. they don't visit the losers or the no-hopers, usually, but the ones with the *big time* futures. they impart wisdom in the night, and the clumsier ones knock stuff over, to let you know they've been there.
