once my mom threw me a surprise party in high school and invited a really weird set of people who she imagined was my 'friend group' and then she gave them all masks and i guess she rented? or even bought? a fog machine? and anyway i opened the door to the room and it was totally smoky and all these people in those clear plastic masks with the weird paint-makeup

i havent really recovered

for a friend's birthday recently, she thought that no one else could come and/or had flaked out, and that it was just going to be her and me going to dinner. however, little did she know that i was in contact with her roommate and via some behind-the-scenes machinations, there were already 4 people waiting for us at the restaurant with a couple more to come. on the way to the restaurant, i was telling her that it sucked that all her friends had flaked out on her but you know what fuck them, we'll have a good time anyway, and all the while i knew she had a friend surprise waiting for her. T, ji.

it was a fun night! nothing wrong with surprise parties per se.

i sometimes have to remind myself that one friend's surprise is another friend's shock.
