from the daily swarm: speaking of djs, i saw dj assault + dj funk at primavera last week. for those who dont know, they are pretty much the biggest names in ghettotech. alan braxe (who co-produced ‘the music sounds better with you’) was overrunning by about 10 minutes after several requests by dj assault to cut the record. alan braxe continued to ignore him, so dj assault walks over, pushes him into a speaker stack, and then grabs the mic and shouts “IM FROM DETROIT HOMEBOY”. the crowd cheers, onstage scuffle ensues, and then assault comes back and drops some 150bpm techno with songs about licking pussy over the top.

ok not new news but i like this excerpt
Just after 9 p.m. on a hot and muggy night in late July 2005, a pair of chartered tour buses pulled up to Vision Nightclub & Lounge on Atlanta's Peachtree Street for a party celebrating the release of Young Jeezy's major label solo debut, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101. Yet when the bus doors opened, it was not Jeezy who emerged but members of the storied ATL street crew Black Mafia Family (BMF).
Dressed in head-to-toe black, the hundreds-strong posse strode toward the megaclub in almost choreographed unison. "They moved like one mass, one organism," remembers one of the party promoters. "I had never seen anything like that." The club had expected BMF in force—they were even comped on the guest list as "+100"—but it was not prepared for an army. Panicked promoters hustled BMF through a special side entrance, VIP treatment that even Jay-Z, Ludacris, Fabolous, and Slim Thug did not receive.
Once inside, BMF awed partiers by tossing fistfuls of cash as they awaited Jeezy, who, though not officially a crew member, was considered "family." And by the time he arrived, just after 1:30 a.m., the crowd was stoked and ready to receive him as A-town royalty.

I am checking in on the Dorothy Doring CD, Southern Exposure. Has it made its way to your desk and have you had a chance to review the CD? If so, does it fit your programming? Vocal jazz with a strong supporting structure doing a nice mix of styles and eras that results in an enjoyable listen. Learn more and hear a sample at http://www.karionpresskits.com/dorothydoring/dorothydoring.html C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz The keys to the success of Southern Exposure are right there from the start: Torkanowsky deft arrangements, his light touch accompaniment on piano, combined with Doring's smooth, crystalline vocals with some occasional bluesy grit—that get to the emotional core of a bunch of familiar tunes. Bluesy grit? Doring's take on Joe Greene's “Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin’” is about as soulful a sound as you'll hear. For contrast, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” features Doring's voice with a lighthearted bounce, with tenor saxophonist Derek Doucet blowing like an extremely cool cat over guitarist Steve Masakowski's crisp comping. Gershwin's “Nice Work If You Can Get It” bubbles and pops with Michael Skinkus' percussion behind Doring's straightforward vocal treatment of the tune. “What the World Needs Now,” from the Bacharach/David songbook, is given a modern sparkle and insistent drive by Torkanowsky, and, again, a soulful delivery by Doring. The set closes with Abbey Lincoln's “Throw It Away.” It's a dark, late night sound, a artist alone as the crowd thins, singing accompanied by a plaintive saxophone from somewhere deep in her heart. Beautiful! Thank you for your time and let me know your thoughts on the Dorothy Doring CD, Southern Exposure

The Breeders are striking out on their own. No longer signed to 4AD, they'll self-release Fate to Fatal, their new limited edition EP, on April 21 (with a Record Store Day pre-release). It's a completely D.I.Y. affair: The band members did everything themselves, from contracting with the vinyl pressing plants to hand-screening the covers.

Cómeme is a label with its working base in Buenos Aires, founded and run by Matías Aguayo and Gary Pimiento. Starting with spontaneous and itinerant parties on the streets of the argentinean capital, parties called "bumbumbox" (which later would travel through huge parts of latinamerica), Gary, Matias and their musician, dancer and dj - friends felt the necessity of running a label that represents the sound that resulted from this way of partying. The sound they created, in collaboration with friends from Buenos Aires, Santiago, Asuncion, is a result of collective work and a common esthetic search between different cities...

bumbumbox:
Matias Aguayo, Eugenia Caloso, Pablo Castoldi and Gary Pimiento do the bumbumbox in the city of Buenos Aires, and sometimes abroad, takin their boomboxes to a public space where together with invited friends and passer-bys a spontaneous party is celebrated. The music comes from an mp3-player connected to the soundsystem. It features dj sets from friends all over the world, who prepare their short sets at home and send them to us via internet. these sets are placed in the heart of our party. Each boombox, loaded with 10 batteries, the adventure of taking a public space, makin friends thru dancing and enjoying music are the ingredients of these parties, which celebrated in daytime or during the night, take place beyond the entertainment business. Some of the bumbumbox sets were done by: Dj Máximo Bondino (Noruega), Christian S. (Cologne), Matías Aguayo (París – Buenos Aires), Vicente Sanfuentes (Chile), Djs Pareja (Buenos Aires), Diego Morales (Santiago, Chile), Korkut Elbay (Cologne), Mikhail (París), Mauricio Rebolledo “Alvin” (playa del Carmen, México), Roccnes (Hamburgo). And we have also featured sets by classics such as Ron Hardy, Daniele Baldelli, Larry Levan, Bobby Q, Steve Hurley, Timmy Regisford, Grand Master Flash, Alexander Robotnic, Bobby Konders which we have selected.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Media helicopters hovered overhead and photographers camped out in front of Japan's top talent agency on Thursday after one of television's cleanest-cut stars was arrested for public indecency.
Tsuyoshi Kusanagi of the pop group SMAP was found drunk and naked in a public park in Tokyo in the early hours of the morning, his agency said in a statement. He was alone and shrieking at the top of his voice, media reports said.
"What's wrong with being naked?" he demanded of a police officer who tried to question him after receiving a complaint about the noise, Kyodo news agency said.
Kusanagi, 34, shot to fame almost 20 years ago as a member of SMAP, the popular boy band whose five members have gone on to monopolize Japanese TV screens in everything from drama to variety and even cookery shows.
The slender Kusanagi is seen as perhaps the most serious of the five, known for his acting skills and fluency in Korean, which brought him fame in South Korea.
"He has such a clean image," one woman told commercial broadcaster TBS. "He doesn't seem like that kind of person."
But Thursday's incident risks damaging the commercial juggernaut of SMAP, whose members, especially heart throb Takuya Kimura, are popular with advertisers.
Corporations including Toyota Motor Corp said they were pulling commercials starring Kusanagi.
Even Communications Minister Kunio Hatoyama expressed anger, because the actor was the face of a government campaign to get the public to switch to digital television.
Kusanagi's agency, Johnny & Associates, a big name in the Japanese entertainment world, issued an apology.
"We apologize deeply for the trouble and worry caused to everyone, especially his fans," the agency said in a faxed statement, adding that it would make a further announcement on Kusanagi's future career.
Tokyo police declined to comment on the case.

justus has a new release: http://kompakt.fm/releases/don_t_go
Oops he did it again... following his very own tradition of creating one modern disco monument after the next, Köhncke again does the splits between past and future, kitsch and avantgarde, German precision and total lunacy. "Don't go" is nothing short of another instant classic. The highly infectous hook, the breakneck bassline and these mind-boggling moments, when you can feel Justus' fingernails gently scratch your cortex... On the flipside ex-Closer Musician Dirk Leyers surprises us with a deeply pounding remix of "(It's gonna be) Alright", one of our big faves off Justus Köhncke's recent album "Safe and Sound". Leyers slingshots the original in the middle of the mainfloor without giving up a cent of the originals' soul.
