q: did you buy a whisk?

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:18 (fifteen years ago) link

!!!!!

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:19 (fifteen years ago) link

did u bake them on aluminum foil like that

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:19 (fifteen years ago) link

i actually feel kind of ;_;

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:19 (fifteen years ago) link

did they stick to the foil? did you spray it first?

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:21 (fifteen years ago) link

nope tza

i sought advice from a bartell employee.
"do you bake much?" i asked
she gave me a weird look and said "sometimes"
but then she was a fountain of warm and friendly wisdom once i explained my situation. she said a whisk would be a bad choice for cookie dough because it's way too thick. she said it would be better for things like cake batter, but that if worse came to worst, i could just use a fork. so i saved $10.49 + tax

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:23 (fifteen years ago) link

i would eat them

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:24 (fifteen years ago) link

i put them on foil because i don't have a cookie sheet. just a broiling pan or whatever it's called. so i used the bottom of the pan. i used foil because it was dirty and grooved, so i thought maybe it would be ok. i tried.

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:24 (fifteen years ago) link

nononono the whisk for mixing the flour + baking soda + salt evenly

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:24 (fifteen years ago) link

so is it bad to use foil and a pan like that?

also, i just used a fork for f + bs + s

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:25 (fifteen years ago) link

though a fork is ok for that if you do it a long time yeah xp

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:25 (fifteen years ago) link

the top layer of cookie is good. i was trying to think of the bottom layer of char as being tolerable like a charred smore marshmallow, but it didn't work.

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:26 (fifteen years ago) link

they will cook unevenly if you do that and stick to it, also give you cancer

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:26 (fifteen years ago) link

anyway i hate acting like a food expert, you did good congrats

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:27 (fifteen years ago) link

actually i used a fork at first, then a wooden spoon

they didn't stick to the foil at all

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:27 (fifteen years ago) link

nononono the whisk for mixing the flour + baking soda + salt evenly

this. wooden spoon for battering!

cancer ;_;

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:27 (fifteen years ago) link

oh xpost good job!

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:28 (fifteen years ago) link

what was the emergency ?

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:28 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks harbl. so could the thickness of the pan have contributed to the bottom burn? it's thicker than a cookie sheet i think.

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:28 (fifteen years ago) link

it wasn't an emergency, just a concern. i was worried that it would be too salty because i used salted butter and 1 tsp salt, but all i spoke to said not to worry.

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:29 (fifteen years ago) link

i am not sure. i never used a roasting pan to bake cookies (i am not trying to be condescending here! it's true!). your oven could also be miscalibrated or any number of things could be wrong with it. i hate electric ovens.

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:30 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't own a cookie sheet either though! my oven was too small for mine

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:31 (fifteen years ago) link

so what do you use?

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i just don't make cookies at my apartment

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:33 (fifteen years ago) link

well that is a shame.

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:34 (fifteen years ago) link

i will do it this week at parents' house probably

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:41 (fifteen years ago) link

i have not made cookies since last year's finals studying/gingersnap marathon. maybe i will also do it this week at parents' house. probably.

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 04:42 (fifteen years ago) link

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 05:04 (fifteen years ago) link

whoa does it taste like roses?

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 05:11 (fifteen years ago) link

it is rosewater-scented, yes

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 05:13 (fifteen years ago) link

the pastry creme, that is. not the flaky layers.

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 05:14 (fifteen years ago) link

harbl, Sunday, 21 December 2008 05:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:16 (fifteen years ago) link

your cookies look like a butt

jergins, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i forgot the name.

basically: candied oranges, pastry creme w/ grand marnier, and sponge cakes (from scratch) done in a spring form and flipped for presentation.

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:47 (fifteen years ago) link

you forgot the name of the butt cookies?!!!??!!

jergins, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:51 (fifteen years ago) link

lingberts, obv

jergins, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:51 (fifteen years ago) link

jergins, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:52 (fifteen years ago) link

"i made a dozen lingberts for the party"
"you mean that one bulbous cookie?"

jergins, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:54 (fifteen years ago) link

cookies should be more pale then

jergins, Sunday, 21 December 2008 07:54 (fifteen years ago) link

you seem irritated by my cookie thread

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 08:39 (fifteen years ago) link

i love this thread, i just showed it to f. and we had a good chuckle.

estela, Sunday, 21 December 2008 08:42 (fifteen years ago) link

cookie

jergins, Sunday, 21 December 2008 08:48 (fifteen years ago) link

i have a question, in all those cookie parts, was there one tough cookie?

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 09:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Hey im makin cookies with friends today!!! But im not in charge of baking im in charge of hot buttered rum

max max max max, Sunday, 21 December 2008 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm sure it will be much appreciated! I have never had this is it like drinking butter because the thought of that freaks me out a lot.

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

No not really. Closer to drinking honey I think. Its really rich though. I had some at little branch last week. I will report back on the rum thread

max max max max, Sunday, 21 December 2008 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link

you should really try making cookies on your own sometime, max. really toughens you up. puts hair on your chest.

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

hot buttered rum sounds gross actually. but i might be interested in knowing how it is.

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 16:33 (fifteen years ago) link

It was great when made by a professional but it remains to be seen what will happen when i do it myself.

max max max max, Sunday, 21 December 2008 16:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I will keep you in my thoughts. I don't like the idea of drinking honey or butter! Rum maybe.

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 16:54 (fifteen years ago) link

im not really sure why i said honey, i guess cause its rich and sweet

max max max max, Sunday, 21 December 2008 17:15 (fifteen years ago) link

you may be interested to know: while todays recipes for hot buttered rum call for rum and batter to be topped off with 3-4 cups of boiling water, in ye olden dayes the drink was prepared by mixing rum, butter, water and spices and then plunging a white-hot poker into the brew until it stopped steaming

max max max max, Sunday, 21 December 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I am very interested to know that yes!

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 17:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Still not convinced this is something ppl should drink!

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

im going to go prepare the batter now

max max max max, Sunday, 21 December 2008 17:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Ok see that is just wrong! A drink made from batter?!?!

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 17:28 (fifteen years ago) link

well its not really batter--its like a bowl of butter + brown sugar + cinammon + nutmeg + cloves... and you scoop a little bit out, put it in a mug w/ some rum and add boiling water

max max max max, Sunday, 21 December 2008 18:38 (fifteen years ago) link

That is gross, max :(

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 19:00 (fifteen years ago) link

protip for you max: ditch everything else and ratchet up the nutmeg quantity. won't taste that good but you'll thank me later!

Lingbert, Sunday, 21 December 2008 19:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Hah!

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 19:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Also: check lingbert droppin culinary protips like woah

tehresa, Sunday, 21 December 2008 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

this worked out well btw--really its mostly rum & hot water w/ some spices and just barely enuf sugar/butter to make it thick & rich

max max max max, Sunday, 21 December 2008 21:46 (fifteen years ago) link

i still love this thread, i enjoy reading about endeavors.

estela, Sunday, 21 December 2008 23:34 (fifteen years ago) link

in rummaging through cabinets and determining we did not have a good alcohol for hot toddy, sister suggested hot buttered rum. i said 'oh haillll no!'.
raspberry ginger mojitos ensued.

tehresa, Monday, 22 December 2008 04:29 (fifteen years ago) link

dont knock it till yovve tried it!
