lxy, Saturday, 25 October 2008 19:51 (fifteen years ago) link

i think there's a review linked upthread that talks about that rum and compares it to a $60 bottle that sounds better

jergins, Saturday, 25 October 2008 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

also, santa teresa now costs $90. when we had it in may it was $38. wtf!

lxy, Saturday, 25 October 2008 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm drinking a mt. gay that i've never had before. can't really tell what its deal is. amber but (maybe) not aged? i don't know. i'm confused by it.

lxy, Sunday, 26 October 2008 02:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i also bought a bottle of fdc7 and

lxy, Sunday, 26 October 2008 02:29 (fifteen years ago) link

lxy, Sunday, 26 October 2008 03:51 (fifteen years ago) link

amon, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 02:21 (fifteen years ago) link

no, not extra old. it's the regular bottle, and the label says mt. gay barbados sugar cane rum. beige with a yellow map. i can't find it anywhere online, even on the mt. gay website.

lxy, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 05:17 (fifteen years ago) link

mt gaie

jergins, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 05:18 (fifteen years ago) link

sandbox meet-up, ybor city, march 26-29, 2009!

lxy, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 05:21 (fifteen years ago) link

it's the regular shaped bottle, i should say.

for clarification purposes, what i consider regular mt. gay is the mt. gay eclipse. white label, yellow map.

this one is called mt. gay barbados sugar cane rum. it was $20, shelved with the fancy boozes. it's gotta be their bottom shelf variety, all sugar and edges.

wiki: Mount Gay produces a "Pure Sugar Cane Rum" occasionally known outside of the US market as "Sugar Cane Brandy".

!

amon, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Mount Gay Sugar Cane Brandy, a careful blend of specially selected rums of age up to seven years, is a fine product whose link with the sugar cane of Barbados is proudly reflected in its character. Not to be confused with generic 'brandy', the product is entirely rum. The name is a legacy from times when the product contained such a high proportion of double distillate that its organoleptic characteristics were much like those of brandy. In some markets, because of legal restrictions, the name 'Sugar Cane Rum' is used in place of the original name 'Sugar Cane Brandy'. (From the Mount Gay Rum website)

amon, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link

No, you didn't misread. The above title claims this review is for Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum, but the label calls it brandy. I just learned the hard way that they're one and the same. It seems that in some states Mount Gay is required by law to label their brandy as rum - either way, it ain't rum, and it certainly ain't good. I used it to remove a nasty clog from my drain, and it didn't even do a very good job of that. The flavor was vaguely reminiscent of shoe leather soaked in vinegar. If you think that sounds appealing, give it a shot. Otherwise, I'd stay clear.

wtf kind of law is that, that's lame

amon, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 16:11 (fifteen years ago) link

haha i guess i didn't try very hard. maybe we could make sidecars with that rum-brandy.

lxy, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 16:21 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, totally stupid law. if it had been labeled properly i wouldn't have bought it.

lxy, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 16:23 (fifteen years ago) link

i have earthshattering rum news

when you first open a bottle and take a whiff, you may not get an accurate representation of what the rum's like

i guess it's like wine. (fuck wine connoisseurs). let it breathe some and then smell, you get a better idea of what it's going to be like

jergins, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 04:48 (fifteen years ago) link

starting from a really light one and then working my way darker to the blackstrap now makes me think that u get drunk in a different way vs. staying with the same thing all night

jergins, Thursday, 11 December 2008 05:54 (fifteen years ago) link

this sounds like a fun progression, but i never acquired an appreciation for rum.

tehresa, Thursday, 11 December 2008 06:11 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, me too except mojitos
but i will appreciate RUM vicariously

t. silaviver, Thursday, 11 December 2008 06:19 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm not trying to talk anyone into anything, but if you were to try one please try flor de cane 5 year with soda water, fresh and bubbly, a nice juicy lime, and ice. one shot. measure it out. make no quick decisions. pass no judgement until the end of the first. by the start of the second you won't regre it

jelky, Sunday, 14 December 2008 08:47 (fifteen years ago) link

starting from a really light one and then working my way darker to the blackstrap now makes me think that i will feel like shit the whole next day
