jergins, you know about the free parking area that is through the creepy rat-infested tunnel from the train station? Under the deck behind the FW gallery?
― jaq, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 22:42 (fourteen years ago) link
nuh uh.hmm. i have my own free spot i like but another could come in handy. i will look up fw gallery
― ((yy (jergins), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 22:44 (fourteen years ago) link
go to the king st station, turn left and go to the far end of the parking lot - there is a tunnel that goes under Jackson and follows old unused tracks, go down that and follow along the chain-link fence past the garbage dumpsters. There's a guy that has set up housekeeping under there in a cardboard box fort, but he is easy-going. There's 7 or 8 spaces under there - not always useful during the workday b/c other people know about it, but almost always totally empty on the weekend. It is very creepy to have to walk down there, wear sturdy shoes.

thanks for an adventurous day, jergs!lxy, it was swell to see you, too!also, surprisingly, there were only 2 repeats of things i already have in the spices!
― te,he (tehresa), Thursday, 9 July 2009 08:00 (fourteen years ago) link

― lxy, Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:30 (fourteen years ago) link
miracle turmeric, for sure.

― te,he (tehresa), Thursday, 9 July 2009 18:55 (fourteen years ago) link
turmeric really? well then, way to go, everybody!
maybe you could get harbl's extra+++ turmeric recipe.
― lxy, Thursday, 9 July 2009 19:01 (fourteen years ago) link
oh i just cooked yellow split peas. they weren't ruined, i didn't even notice extra turmeric taste even!
― spite n ease (harbl), Thursday, 9 July 2009 19:53 (fourteen years ago) link
they must have been really yellow!
― lxy, Thursday, 9 July 2009 19:58 (fourteen years ago) link
turmeric is very good for you but i can't remember quite how
― spite n ease (harbl), Thursday, 9 July 2009 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link
no it's true when i saw dr. andrew weil give a lil talk he was raving about the benefits of turmeric but now i can't remember why... something about longevity?
― te,he (tehresa), Thursday, 9 July 2009 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link
Mr. Jaq and I were inspecting a turmeric root at Uwajimaya last night! Housed between the mushrooms and the herbs, looked like a scrawny carrot. Maybe all that yellowness gives you a sunny outlook?
― jaq, Thursday, 9 July 2009 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link
the tamarind i got (also at uwajimaya) was in a box and i had no idea if there was a way to choose it for best quality so i just got some and it seems to be working out ok but i really don't know maybe it is horrible quality! i also got a cherimoya there that i was really excited about but then i let it get too ripe and had to get rid of it because it was leaking on my counter :(
― te,he (tehresa), Thursday, 9 July 2009 20:27 (fourteen years ago) link
i have never bought a real tamarind, only the gummy pulp you buy in sealed plastic. seems ok.
― spite n ease (harbl), Thursday, 9 July 2009 20:36 (fourteen years ago) link
this is what i had to do with my tamarind:<img src=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3159/2434687926_f3a302d60c_m.jpg>there is still some left. maybe i'll make some juice.
― te,he (tehresa), Thursday, 9 July 2009 20:40 (fourteen years ago) link
oops http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3159/2434687926_f3a302d60c_m.jpg
I love those tamarind sodas that Greenleaf makes. They are probably just tamarind pulp, simple syrup, and soda water. Sprinkled with chopped peanuts though!
I bought apricots and a cherimoya last night! I found out a few weeks ago it is perfectly fine to keep your cherimoya in the fridge. It will stay good even if the skin gets all brown and shabby.

Skillet did a breakfast thing by my work today. mmmmmmm i got corn pancakes with raspberries and almost a sour cream or something. fun morning surprise
― jergins, Friday, 24 July 2009 18:20 (fourteen years ago) link
Oh I so want to try some of their food! They are headquartered in the building across 4th Ave from us, the one where City Light found my wallet on the roof.
― jaq, Friday, 24 July 2009 18:34 (fourteen years ago) link
they're really pretty amazing, what they do. but....the food is SO heavy. if i have a full lunch from there i feel sick afterwards
― jergins, Friday, 24 July 2009 18:38 (fourteen years ago) link
I've heard their burgers are really excellent - have you tried one? I think they set up for all the Mariners games, will have to mosey over that way maybe.
Corn pancakes sound A+++
― jaq, Friday, 24 July 2009 18:44 (fourteen years ago) link
the burgers ARE excellent, i've had them 3x, i'd be curious to know what you thought. i think it's maybe some kind of carmelized onion something on top. OMG. very very very heavy though, i didn't eat dinner any of the times i had one for lunch. people also complain about skillet's cost but that doesn't bother me so much, not when Metropolitan Market is my #1 grocery store.
i DID see them around before a mariners game. oh here http://www.skilletstreetfood.com/calendar.htm they should do something with the light rail, set up at SODO or c. city or rainier beach
― jergins, Friday, 24 July 2009 18:56 (fourteen years ago) link
oooh they will be here next friday, too. perhaps i will try this!
― te,he (tehresa), Friday, 24 July 2009 19:44 (fourteen years ago) link
would anyone care to try the zig zag lounge soon? the bartender is highly recommended.it's on the pike place hill climb. i hope it's not a tourist trap!
― te,he (tehresa), Friday, 24 July 2009 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link
i would love to! stuff at the market's fun imo, and i don't mind a few tourists.
i'm out of town through August 2nd, but after that let's plan on it. also, light rail drinks columbia city trip plzzz
― jergins, Friday, 24 July 2009 22:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes! THere's also a good Mexican place (El Quetzal) and a Filipino point-point place I want to try near the Beacon Hill station.

is it called that because you point at what you want to order?

yeah yeah jaq, we want to explore around each of the stations! i guess around othello there's a great vietnamese bakery, tammy bakery. hey, maybe you've gone there? i've heard rumor about the beacon hill mex connection. and that's the station i most want to explore.
― jergins, Friday, 24 July 2009 23:20 (fourteen years ago) link
yep, it's sort of cafeteria style.
That list is making me want to pack up and head home right now jergins. also need to stock up on gin for the coming heatwave.
Haven't been to Tammy - we lived closer to the Rainier Beach station (which, there isn't much there but a super p-patch and a gigantic buddha - okay pho place if you walk all the way over to Rainier though also donut king) and didn't explore as much as we should have. it was really great to ride down MLK on those smooooooth rails after living through all that destruction/construction.

baltimore is supposed to get a new light rail line but people in one neighborhood are complaining that it will be 'too loud', also why can't i just drive a car
