PECOTA says that he’s the 20th most valuable pitcher in baseball long-term, more valuable than Roy Oswalt, Dontrelle Willis, or Justin Verlander. He’s one of just eleven pitchers to post a VORP of 40 or higher in each of the last two seasons. He pitches in a major media market, is in the prime of his career, and has no red flags in his injury or health performance record. And yet, he’s never received a vote for the Cy Young award, never made an All-Star team, and has barely one-fifth the Google hits of Barry Zito.

Who is he?

The Elite Eleven: Pitchers with a VORP of 40 or Higher in both 2005 and 2006

Clemens, Roger
Zito, Barry
Santana, Johan
Carpenter, Chris
Smoltz, John
Zambrano, Carlos
Willis, Dontrelle
Oswalt, Roy
Webb, Brandon
Myers, Brett

JOHN LACKEY

If the Angels had any sort of offense, the West would be theirs for the next 3-4 years.

well, you're on a streak today.

A streak is just a slide that's leveled out.

I think Frost wrote that.

How did Lackey not get any Cy votes last year, tho? He was their best starter (barring Weaver, who would've been their best by far, were the Angels not allergic to winning - their VORPs are almost equal, despite Weaver having FOURTEEN FEWER STARTS), and comparable to anyone that's not on the Twins, in Canada, or blessed with Wang's luck.

WINS WINS WINS

more valuable than Roy Oswalt

how is this possible?

No Time Before Time (Barry Barry), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I think Oswalt's injury comps are not good.

Not sure why Verlander's long term value wouldn't be higher though.

Less major league success?

David RER (Frank Fiore), Wednesday, 20 December 2006 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah but a high upside, a nice arsenal of pitches, clean delivery and good command and youth would project well I'd think.
