the secret of JABBA JABBA NIB NIB

from an old newsprint zine i grabbed off the street in ... 1996? early 1997?

it was the centerfold illustration. two strange creatures sitting on clouds, playing scrabble. the words they had on the board were really random-ass words, like "jabberwocky" and stuff.

one was saying "SNIPEHUNT IS *NOT* A WORD! YOU ARE FAILING!"

the other (looked a lot like a blown-up tarsier) was saying "JABBA JABBA! NIB NIB!!"

it was two colors (black and baby blue) and the more i think about it, the more convinced i become that the artwork was by mr mat brinkman. i am not sure, it was much more "open" than most of the stuff i have seen but it had the same vibe.

also i am not sure which zine it was but i have a feeling it was vice because the only two zines i regularly grabbed back then were vice and a hip-hop one called "the chronic" (#9, the wu-tang forever issue was *incredible* and i am bummed i ever let go of it)

does anybody know where i can get a copy of this artwork?? has anybody else seen it?

actually i also regularly grabbed XLR8R and URB but the format wasn't right for either of those ... this was folded like a newspaper, so that i could unfold it and put it on my wall ... the "folded newsprint" thing *really* makes me think it was an old, old vice.

what city did you pick it up in?

jelky (jergins), Monday, 4 December 2006 04:21 (seventeen years ago) link

There used to be a foldout newsprint Portland-based zine from a long time ago name Snipehunt.

Something about this is familiar to me

This is by Brinkman... the only other part of that issue that would have been in color would have been the centerfold. It's 2004 though, not 1996.

wait, that sez 2001.. not 2004. i are dumb. still not 1996, though.

i picked it up in berkeley! very well could have been that zine!

vahid (vahid), Monday, 4 December 2006 05:05 (seventeen years ago) link

i mean, could have been "snipehunt"

i don't think it was paper rodeo ... the colors look right, but i don't remember it being a 100% comics zine.

OTOH who knows.
