Sugar Cane/Buzz Rickson's Vintage Selvage Denim Jeans are for those who can appreciate the myriad of nuances and character found in the finest single-malt scotch, the clearest, most-colorless diamond or a hand-crafted, centuries-old oriental rug while you guys were still listening to Tortoise and Stereolab.

i've decided i'm not buying any new jeans until i can get the $495 hand-dyed 100% indigo okinawa jeans.

maybe if i could set aside 5 bucks a week for two years ...

I imagine hilarity ensuing if Steve Shasta showed up to work wearing Canes! Vahid, don't pay History Pres prices, you can get those Okinawas for 330ish, maybe less.

i've never seen him not in levis or camo shorts

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 4 December 2006 07:56 (seventeen years ago) link

dudes, what's up w/Cheap Mondays? they really are cheap.

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 4 December 2006 07:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I have a half dozen pairs of j-denim that are such faithful reproductions that they fool some people (ie, jason), but not so much around the office.

I have a couple old pair of Sugarcane 47 501 repros (including one pair that I've had before I worked here). They held up okay (like a B-/C+) from a quality standpoint, which leads to be concerned about SC's longevity. They cost about half of the listed retail on the HP site, but possibly hampered because the dollar is at a 15 year low against foreign currency.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 4 December 2006 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh I bought them at American Rag in Osaka when you were listening to the Archers Of Loaf, I don't buy denim online (esp. not at those prices!)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 4 December 2006 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

i saw archers of loaf @ soma opening for weezer on their first tour (the blue album cover). last song of the set, singer from AoL pours a gallon of milk over his head during the feedback solo. mind blown.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 4 December 2006 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

wait steve you work for lev1s????

vahid (vahid), Monday, 4 December 2006 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

vahid, was this at SOMA?

no i work for WakeboardMedia.com as editor-in-chief.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 4 December 2006 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

i saw archers of loaf @ soma

fall of 1994 IIRC

vahid (vahid), Monday, 4 December 2006 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

grbchv! (gbx), Monday, 4 December 2006 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

obi strip (sanskrit), Monday, 4 December 2006 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

v,

hahahahaha, sorry for my poor scanning skills! are you sure it wasn't april of 1994? i'm pretty sure it was april because it was my friend's bday and we took him to see AOL as that was his favorite band.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 4 December 2006 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Exchange rate with the yen is actually pretty decent right now though, so if you end up visiting Japan, or know anyone there who can pick stuff up for you, prices are much better. Otherwise, call up Gordon at Blue in Green in SoHo or Kiya at Self Edge in SF.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Monday, 4 December 2006 21:16 (seventeen years ago) link

self edge's prices are identical to HP, I believe they are their supplier.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 4 December 2006 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

did you buy them when you worked at that one yuppie furniture store, steve shasta?

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Monday, 4 December 2006 21:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm pretty sure HP is the distributor for all Canes in the US. Lots of other great JP denim at Self Edge and BiG though, that I think is not so inflated in price as Canes are here.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Monday, 4 December 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

no i bought them when i was a freelance consultant. i'm surprised you didn't know that.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 4 December 2006 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, jerk

grbchv! (gbx), Monday, 4 December 2006 22:26 (seventeen years ago) link

sorry, i don't have a database! i also i still enjoy listening to tortoise and stereolab, but i never liked archers of loaf.

Tyrone Slothrop (Tyrone Slothrop), Monday, 4 December 2006 22:30 (seventeen years ago) link

What about long walks on teh beech?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 4 December 2006 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 4 December 2006 22:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I've been reading this thread all day and not really paying attention, I guess! It just came to me.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 4 December 2006 22:40 (seventeen years ago) link

april 1995??

vahid (vahid), Monday, 4 December 2006 23:20 (seventeen years ago) link

i was attending the JEA high school journalism at the convention center, we drove over to SOMA from our hotel in the gaslamp. the JEA website lists the san diego convention as happening in april 1995.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 4 December 2006 23:22 (seventeen years ago) link

also the night before i went to a show at the 14th + c street space (remember that?!?) (it was some garage rock 4-piece w/ an organist, they were all wearing j spacemen sunglasses and black mod jackets) and i don't think 14th + c was open in april 1994.
