The title tells the tale:

"I Know Not Why I Am So Sad": Melancholy and Knowledge in Early Modern English Painting, Drama, and Prose

5 chapters, 300 pages long . . .

Congratulations, what are you going to do next?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 29 November 2006 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Just to give some of you noize duders who may not know some background, but Berkeley's English Department is one of the highest regarded in the USA, tied with Iowa for #1 in the country (currently, not using stale data).

I'm positive that this was no small feat, and Drew being able to juggle his other career of writing for Pitchfork Media allthewhile completing this study is simply flabbergasting.

it is, indeed (and it's so rigorous that i know 3 people who've attempted the program and had a breakdown after the first semester).
congrats, drew - hope your period of study was free of psychiatric intervention.

Steve, can you perhaps maybe lay off the nonsequitorial PFork pfisting? & I say this not as a fellow Forker, but as a dude that knows you could do so much better in the ZING dept. if you tried.

(congrats btw Drew!)

David RER (Frank Fiore), Friday, 1 December 2006 14:36 (seventeen years ago) link

suite! congrats!

Kenneth Branagh (gcannon), Friday, 1 December 2006 14:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Dear Mr. David Raposa,

I know that humor doesn't translate particular well on the internet unless it is an inside joke that flies over the majority people's heads, but let's just say that Drew was NOT best known for being a writer for Pitchfork and perhaps he had some other exotic career (in 2 separate interfaces) that consumed quite a bit of his time and energy... do you see where I'm going with this or should I go get the training wheels out of storage?

that a lollipop?

ian (orion), Saturday, 2 December 2006 04:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, at Cal when you file your dissertation at the Graduate Division office they give you a lollipop with a sticker on it that says "PHinisheD" and it has a scholar's cap on it. My friend Erika's theory is that it's the final insult, the best way to infantilize you during your moment of triumph- "here you go, SUCKER"
