i am going to register for everything in neon colours

i'm just confused by weddings
in my head i think they are a celebration of love and everyone is there for that and it's a great reason for a fun party. but obv this is not always the case and weddings are about a lot of other things. and i guess registry does make things easier? but so many people live together before they get married anyway, they have a lot of stuff. it seems old-fashioned. though i do like presents. i am totally getting married in the woods/desert/rocks-beside-ocean, obv. and a bear/snake/whale is going to do the ceremony.

re: wedding registry, I don't know a single person who wanted to do a registry. I also don't know a single person who was then forced into doing a registry by their own parents because "You don't really want grandma trying to figure this out on her own, do you? I mean think of the crap you'll get that way." :\

upside is that you can replace/upgrade almost everything in your house this way, for free.

Purpose of registry: to outfit a new couple with the basics they'll need for life on their own, because they've never kept house before, lived with parents or in dorm, and can't afford to furnish themselves b/c they are young and just starting out. Almost none of this applies to late 20s-and-up modern (urban?) couples anymore! I think that's the distasteful part.

Altho of course there's also the part where yr guests want to feel like part of your new adventure and are happy to contribute...but it's true, sometimes guests don't have money!! I think it should be okay for the couple to request no presents -- the donations thing is awes, I think a lot of (older?) people would be ooged out if you asked for cash, tho sadly that's often the most useful thing.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 30 December 2006 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

my sis and her fiance are musicians and i think are going to ask some friends to play music at wedding/reception in lieu of gifts cause they know they're all poor. but also, i'm sure they will register for tons of shit because she is a soccer mom already (even though she's not even 30 and doesn't have kids... all she talks about is: puppies, babies and home ownership)

have just had a relative get married and yes, all the older women in the family got SO shitty when the couple requested money for a new bed rather than the trad registry list, so a list was set up anyway. (they all also objected to the bed being referred to as "the workbench" on the subsequent print-out.)

Yeah, donations got nixed for me. I didn't honestly expect people to bring gifts though, I sincerely hope you didn't bring gifts thinking I expected them, Laurel!!
