chicago has better burritos than anywhere on the east coast, that's for hell sure.

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 20:18 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a good burrito place EVERYWHERE, more or less. (I mean geez right now I'm having pangs for the enchiladas from Flash Taco, and that's just a fast-food full-of-drunks corner stand.)

Beware the fat pizzas. In my world there is such a thing as pizza and there is such a thing as lasagna, and we don't need some weird cheesy hybrid blurring the distinction.

Totally get up on those Vienna Beef classics, though, and savor the cucumber.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 20:19 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a good burrito place EVERYWHERE, more or less.

Yeah, I was going to say this. Belmont is a major street, there's probably dozens of good taquerias on Belmont.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 20:24 (seventeen years ago) link

man, i LOVE flash taco. it's so perfectly situated, i've left shows at at least 3 different venues during boring bands and brought back flash taco. sometimes you just can't wait for the tamale dude, y'know?

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

you can ALWAYS wait for the tamale dude if Flash Taco is yr only option. fucking gross, man. MAN.

baby wizard sex (gbx), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 20:57 (seventeen years ago) link

you're out of your mind.

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 20:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Totally out of mind. They might just be ladling it out for drunkards, but those Enchiladas Flash, with the chorizo, just ... ridiculous tasty.

The weird part is that my memory-layout of good Mexican in Chicago is just built on a million mid-sized anonymous burrito places, all of them delicious, just up and down Western or Ashland or dotted through Wrigleyville or whatever -- nothing I could name offhand, I guess. And then a couple more sit-down spots in Pilsen, and then whatever tacquerias I happened to be around a lot (like the taqueria Michoacan II around Irving Park and ... Sheridan? ... where I accidentally ate half a tacoful of BRAINS num num).

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Flash Taco only stands out in my mind because their vegetarian burritos come with grilled peppers and onions. I also like the black-bean (instead of refried) option at Picante, although they're pretty overpriced compared to the plenty decent anonymous places with names like La Fiesta Mexicana and Famous Taco Burrito King or whatever.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

taco veloz on chicago (either just east or just west of ashland, i can't remember right now) is good. there are not one, not two, but THREE locations for la pasadita all on the same block (ashland between thomas and division). i like la pasadita because it's cheap, it's good, it's open late, and no one has been murdered there in at least 10 days. or at least 5, i know someone got shot there last week.

and holy fuck i can not believe you mentioned irving park and sheridan because a friend of mine tends bar in uptown and gets me drunk for free on thursdays. i always wind up at the mexican place between the bar and the sheridan red line stop. burritos the size of a can of tennis balls. SPICEY PORK BURRITOS!!!! always sound like such a good idea at 1:45 am, by 7:15 when i'm on the el riding to work it's obvious they are a huge mistake.

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

does flash taco still have the dollar menu? i can remember staggering out of sub-t with no folding money and still being able to get 3 tacos for like a buck or something.

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

according to a friend of mine the best burritos ever were from a place on western north of division at like potomac or hirsch. but he was from the uk so he probably didn't know what he was talking about.

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:29 (seventeen years ago) link

brits don't know shit about tacos. i know this because i am currently surrounded by brits and they don't know shit about tacos.

GET A TACO MORANS

JordanC (JordanC), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 21:51 (seventeen years ago) link

around the cali blue line stop will probably be the next place i move once i can wrap my brain around the idea of packing and unpacking my apartment again. i always say this time is the last time but it never is. it's either up that way or out to humboldt park, which, truthfully, if it was on california on the park, it really wouldn't be so bad.

otto midnight, that 'tofu makes you gay' ding dong (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 22:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Friend bartending near Irving Park and Sheridan = hahaha umm not that I've been there in a few years, but last I spent time the main options on said corner were like Nick's Uptown and the new Holiday, making the area some weirdass northern reflection of that one corner on Milwaukee in Wicker Park? And then Nick's was open like two hours later than every other bar, so the clientele of various sorts of places would funnel into Nick's around closing time and inevitably someone would get physically tossed out, maybe by bouncers, maybe by fellow patrons? Plus also crappy plastic darts and the erotic swimwear Memory boobies game.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 22:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I believe Otto's friend is at Holiday.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 December 2006 22:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Directly across from the Michoacan II! And around the corner from a convenient hot-dog stand, if you're too drunk to trust that you won't accidentally order yourself a brain taco.

roffle! there's two, near southport, where i used to live in 1998. neither are that good.

also, completely discount everything nabisco ever says on the subject of chicago food considering that he 1. likes flash taco 2. doesn't like chicago-style pizza.

Last night I was trying to think of an NYC/Chicago translation map (prompted by thinking "hey Jon, Belmont = 14th Street"), but I didn't get very far. I don't know if that says more about their being totally different cities or just my imagination not working.

last time i was in chicago it was a short amtrak layover and i had JUST enough time to go down the street for some italian beef w/ giardiniera and then run back to catch my train. it was cold that day anyway.

the museum of science and industry is swell, totally one of the best science museums in the country (not as good as the one in san francisco though).

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 29 December 2006 01:41 (seventeen years ago) link

i still have the job, luckily i've been so sick (as jon can attest by his repeated "are you sure you don't want some dayquil?" at the bar) that they assumed i wasn't coming in. when i came in this morning they told me to go home, depending on how much i get done i may take off soon.

and jon/kenan, did we close out our tab before leaving wednesday? i know i closed out the first tab when the bartender's changed shifts but we had a few more after that.

Jon, when can we hang out? My band is playing a show on Saturday early evening if you want to come, not too far from your HQ. Sorry I wasn't able to make drinkeez the last couple nights.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 December 2006 16:04 (seventeen years ago) link

hey, i'd be up for more drinks tonight (though i'm staying the fuck away from the jameson this time around). i have to meet a guy about a thing but i'll be around probably after 9:30 or 10 if you guys want to catch beers somewhere.

I might be up for that. Kr and I are going to Green Zebra for dinner at 7, and then we're making sure Nick and Sarah's cats aren't dead, but we don't have plans following that.
