i think, actually, since my grandmother died in june, my family is a tad LESS racist and right wing. i mean, i feel bad that she's dead and all, but i haven't heard nearly as many anti gay comments this year.

my dad's a pretty tolerant guy for the most part, but whenever anything blatantly anti-gun or anti-military (he's a retired army guy and teaches jrotc at a high school, works with the school rifle team, etc. [i live in south carolina ffs]) comes on television, he loses his shit. i remember one time that happened during an episode of west wing, which was at the time one of the few things he regularly watched besides the history channel.

mom is like me: not tons interested in politics, but did watch a few of those gerald ford speech reruns last night, and also likes to sometimes mess w/grandma by making fun of george bush

mom's b-friend: into conspiracy theories, and will watch political talk shows all day if you let him

grandma: doesn't really talk politics much, but is conservative, religious, and most likely racist

overall, my family doesn't really talk politics that much, and as far as I know, doesn't display a lot of openly racist behavior. I'm sure there are racists in the family though, maybe they're just ashamed to admit it (especially after I got married to a chinese person that one time!)

last night my grandma was telling us about how my cousin was with her in bj's and they had a cashier with gold teeth and my cousin asked him about them and why they didn't have diamonds. she told us they were called "grids" (which i didn't dispute because hey, maybe grandma is more up on this than i am and they really are called grids) and then she whispered "i hate to say it but it's always black people, they can't afford it"
