wayne martin belger - makes handmade pinhole cameras out of stuff, then takes camera specific pictures with them.

though it belongs on architecture thread, worth mentioning that i have been pouring over le corbusier's writings. i can't write the paper for the life of me, but jesus, fucking brilliant son of a bitch.

and Ellsworth Kelly. and Jean Arp's wife, Sophie Taeuber-Arp. i cannot find a postable image, but i saw 'Point on Point' at the philly museum of art and yes, have been thinking about it.

trees (trees), Sunday, 26 November 2006 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

le corbusier is (perhaps indirectly) responsible for some truly regrettable 20th century urban design. all those big bleak blocks of high-rise housing projects with all that dead space in between... that's corbusier's american legacy.

i've been thinking about the landscape architect laurie olin, who's worked on a lot of high-profile things and has a feature on him in today's la times. but he also wrote an afterword for something i just read in class -- eden by design, about a never-realized 1930 olmsted-bartholomew plan for southern california's parks, playgrounds, and beaches.

tiki b., Sunday, 26 November 2006 06:40 (nineteen years ago)

oh and last night i watched the michael almereyda doc on william eggleston. it's a good condemnation of artworld douchery, although i'm not sure if it's meant to be. but tbh some of eggleston's anti-intellectual simpleton-savant shtick is a bit irritating too.

tiki b., Sunday, 26 November 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

jbr, i am aware of such. but would you rather have le corbusier or frank lloyd wright design the ideal city? that's the paper i have to write (sort of). i choose le c, only because FLW is batshit crazy and HIS legacy to America is suburban/exurban sprawl, which is arguably much worse than le corbusier's block apartments.

also, le c designed my favorite building in existence, probably (villa savoye), so my bias is with him despite his horrble legacy.

lf, are you goin to any of the art basel events? is anything really good happening? i read a three-page article about it in travel + leisure today in the airport.

been thinking abt PICASSO after seeing exhibit @ the Whitney a month or two ago that showed Pablo's influence on various American artists by putting em side by side so you could see, say, the effect of cubism on JACKSON POLLACK. star of the show I'd never heard of: STUART DAVIS.

coleman in exile, Monday, 27 November 2006 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Stuart Davis is the star of everything
