dear latebloomer,

do you think it's possible for them to make a good new "alien" franchise movie? what do you think would be the ideal setting for a good new alien? in your opinion would it be necessary to involve ripley?

hmmm, that's a good question. i think what the series needs more than anything is more of the atmosphere, horror and hard science fiction elements from the first two films rather than the cartoonish action from resurrection.

i'd also an examination into the Aliens' origins, or at least i want to know about the species that created the crashed spaceship seen in in the first Alien, and why it was carrying those eggs. of course i wouldn't want the aliens completely demystified, as that would take the fun out of them.

my ideal setting would be a discovery of or an expedition to an outpost of that alien "space jockey" civilization, perhaps long vanished. the outpost of course was a breeding ground for the aliens, who the civilization used as biological weapons in wars against each other. of course this would give an opportunity to explore a creepy, claustrophobic alien, giger-esque world, and somehow the protagonists would have to survive the inevitable reactivation of the aliens.

if possible, it'd be cool perhaps to see what the "pure" (non-anthropomorphic) form of the alien looks like, since in the previous films it's established that the aliens take on the shape of their host (i.e. the dog-shaped creature in alien 3). like perhaps the space jockeys have a "pure" sample on hand in some kind of arcane biomechanical laboratory. that kind of thing. it's just a start, but i think the hard sci-fi/biology elements would be an interesting focus. and of course if fox was nice enough to invite giger to do design work for the film that would be rad.

as for ripley/sigourney weaver i don't think ripley is "necessary" for an alien film, since the appeal has always been mainly the creatures themselves. but if she was somehow to agree to appear in it (doubtful at this point considering recent comments), the part-alien clone thread introduced in resurrection could play an interesting role, especially if she was to come into contact the ostensible origin of the creatures themselves as outlined above.

however, knowing that this is all nerdy wishful thinking and that the future of the franchise unfortunately resides for now in alien vs predator sequels, i guess i'll have to settle for the inevitable remake/reboot of the original ten years from now.

Have there been any movie/tv series that have gotten a reboot that existed originally as films and not as comics/books/other form of media?

Other than Battlestar Galactica...

i'm totally with you here.

i personally think what rules about 1 & 2 is the backdrop of corporate bureaucracy against which everything takes place, & i'd like to see a bit more of that in any sequel--the working stiffs vs. middle management element adds SO much realism. also the way everything looks (design-wise) so functional and profit-oriented. ripley using a glorified box-lifter to fight the mother alien!

to me that element is CRUCIAL to juxtapose with the actual alien stuff. not just the burke-style "we're just as bad" so much as the fact that the people need to be completely self-reliant, no one is going to help them, the crew is expendable etc etc.

that's why i think a colony/terraforming operation like in aliens might be a good setting? like some families setting up a lv-426 type of settlement when they come across some alienage. basically what happens in aliens, only... different i guess?? colony doesn't get completely wiped out?

there's lots of straight remakes of movies, is that what you mean?

xxx-post

yeah, perhaps like a straight-foward kind of story without military types. just colonists dealing with the discovery of the ancient alien-breeding complex or something as they get knocked off/coconed/eaten/whatevs..

jw (ex machina), Monday, 18 December 2006 23:40 (seventeen years ago) link

alien 3's all right. it's flawed but still a decent film, considering the circumstances under which it was made. it takes itself seriously at least, unlike alien resurrection, which really pissed me off. it's tone reminded me of batman and robin, which had come out earlier the same year. it was really "wink-wink, nudge-nudge, look how whimsical we are, squee!!"

of course it was directed by the guy who did amelie.

yo LB,

i was thinking last night before i went to bed that going the colony route might be too played out after aliens and alien 3. maybe it would be more interesting/fun to see aliens running amok in a more built-up area, like an actual city? or a planet? i'm not saying earth here... but something to think about.

There is also, in the film but not the original novella, a subplot involving an abandoned mine. According to Longyear, this was added at the insistence of the studio, which was afraid that the audience would not understand that the Mine of the title was a possessive pronoun.

there was a draft of Alien 3 written by William Gibson that took place on a futuristic shopping mall/space station kind of place.
