grape leaves

where does one buy grape leaves? would a large suburban grocery store have them? and how do they come packaged: preserved in olive oil or fresh? i don't know where to look or what they would look like. i can only find pre-stuffed grape leaves in a can, grosssss

I've always seen them in a big jar. In olive oil, I suspect. I've never actually bought them. I kinda enjoy the salty oily grossness of the prepackaged kind.

I've seen them in jars, packed in water (brine?). It'll have to be a fairly large grocery or one that specializes in the exotic/frou-frou. It's the kind of thing a Trader Joe's would carry. They'd be with the pickles and olives.

they're water-packed, i think. definitely not in oil. are you going to make your own stuffed grape leaves? i did that once. it took about 6 hours and every inch of counter/table space we had in the kitchen.

i want to make them because i have a buttload of time and my parents' kitchen and money. also i love them. and i found out they are packed in brine and sold in jars. we don't have a trader joe's. i'm going to look in the frou-frou store tomorrow. i might have to forget about it.

ok i did it, it worked and only took like 3 hours, maybe (not counting boiling and letting sit overnight). i found them in an italian imports store. good but i will remember to add more salt to the stuffing next time.
