Wow. Can anyone give me any reason why I should not immediately order it? I happen to also needa new turntable.

hmm, now i'm torn. the audio technica one is even cheaper.

the ion one gets some bad feedback from people on amazon. i'll skip that one.

I'm a tech idiot, but one thing I don't understand is whether you need to run the turntable through a preamp (and if you do isn't the USB function useless?)

i thought you just hooked the turntable right up to your computer and the software does the rest.

wait, i think the one that hammy shlammy sells is just an Ion one. maybe i will got with audio technica.

Software is Windows-only although I wonder how much easier the software actually makes the whole process - maybe not much.

The software is key to ease of use. If you're comfortable evaluating different software packages for mastering, then you should just get a nice record player with a preamp, and a little USB interface like this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BD1AF0

The key is to get a decent turntable, instead of a cheapo turntable with a crappy needle and a drive belt that will wear out in a year.

Whatever you do, try not to save your LPs as MP3s - unless you don't hear any quality difference between MP3s and CDs. Convert the LPs to WAVs, burn them to CDs, then convert them to MP3s if you want them. The CDs will sound much better.

And if you want to get nuts with it, this guy's your man:

i think these USB turntables are a great fucking idea. i don't know about the execution but the temptation is definitely there to have something you plug in without 30 feet of cable and a special adapter thingy.

yah, exactly. i have been waiting for the lazybones model for years.

i'm wondering the same thing. this would be the perfect xmas gift for my father, but he's a mac user and while he's very computer-savvy, he doesn't have a lot of time (nor, i suspect, the patience) to futz around with software issues.

i can't imagine it's a good turntable, but maybe it is. I've seen ads for the "burn to cd" system that is also o nthat page and that looks terrible.

akm (akmonday), Monday, 27 November 2006 19:11 (seventeen years ago) link

the all-in-one faux-olde-tymey looking thing that you can burn vinyl onto cd with is supposed to sound pretty bad. the copies that is. it makes more sense to me that a turntable plugged directly into your computer would sound better. it would be like plugging it into a receiver basically.

i might get rufus one of those non-burning nostalgic cd/lp players though so that he can play his trucking records and 45 storybooks in his room. those crosley ones look nice. especially the suitcase ones. though those don't play cds only lps.
