expensive, though.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 27 November 2006 09:33 (seventeen years ago) link

What's the street price?

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Monday, 27 November 2006 16:25 (seventeen years ago) link

$50

Worth every penny

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 27 November 2006 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

They should sell it as separate discs.

Next Christmas.

What I want for Christmas: a Tom Waits lyrics refrigerator magnet set. It will include words like "smoke," "skeleton," and "Kenosha."

And if such a thing does not exist, it should.

he's on letterman tonight, daily show tomorrow

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 05:46 (seventeen years ago) link

gave this a thorough listen all the way through on Thanksgiving, finally. it has really good sequencing as a whole. the covers stand out the most on first go-round, the Ramones one is sweet and the "King Kong" is fucking mind boggling, ultra-distorted vocal rhythm chug like some Tall Dwarfs loop gone haywire.

sleeve (sleeve), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 07:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Didn't he (and her) write that Ramones cover for the Ramones?

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 10:21 (seventeen years ago) link

"Didn't he (and her) write that Ramones cover for the Ramones?"

You mean "The Return Of Jackie & Judy"? If he did, he wasn't credited for it.

still wrapping my head around it...but man..its just so easy to love tom waits...three discs, though is a bit much. its the nature of such a set, but i feel just mired in some odd muck. this is a good and bad thing

I went through a Waits period in the 90s. I know he's good, but nowadays I find it hard to get excited about what he's doing. Was surprised to see Christgau giving this 4 stars in Rolling Stone.

Nu-Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm assuming he's done "I don't wanna grow up" but then whaddoIno...

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 15:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Just checked: My goodness, he really did do "The return of Jackie and Julie" !!!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

So to confirm: do the liner notes include zero session info? Not even dates of recording or players?

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm waiting for the best of single disc version.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 19:01 (seventeen years ago) link

No session info or recording dates in liners, just a list of musicians for each disc. Done intentionally, he doesn't want it to be broken down like that and wants it to be considered one thing.

MarkRichardson (Mark R), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not one thing, whatever Waits wants. Any listener would know the tracks cut a wide swathe through his career. So the idea that basic session info would interfere with a listener's experience of aesthetic wholeness or whatever is nutty. It would be nice to know who's playing some of those wicked guitar licks.

Roy Kasten (Roy Kasten), Tuesday, 28 November 2006 21:24 (seventeen years ago) link

one month passes...
Holy crap this is good, and I'm only halfway through disc 2.

nowadays I find it hard to get excited about what he's doing

I was skeptical too after the last 4 or so albums, but this is near Bone Machine quality stuff so far.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 1 January 2007 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I gave the box set one listen and it didn't really strike me as being anything at all. The first disc had a few good tracks, but the rest was just..."there". Hoping it will grow on me.

theres alot of winners

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 2 January 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

There are TWO Ramones covers. 'Danny Says' is even better.
