Terrible, terrible news:

With deep regret, we must announce that Charles Gocher passed away yesterday in Seattle due to a long battle with cancer at the age of 54. He is survived by the two of us who adopted him as a brother 25 years ago and his many friends around the world. He will be missed more than most could ever know. Our thanks to everyone for their support and encouragement during the past three, very difficult years. Many of you were not aware that Charles was ill and that’s because he wanted it that way. Details of a memorial in his honor will be announced soon.

Oh no...quite a shock, I hadn't heard about him being ill. 54 is way too young to die.

well, there is this consolation, HIS CAREER WAS WELL DOCUMENTED.

I love those dudes. my best wishes to alan & richard. and charles' family. they were the best at what they did and they were the only ones who did what they did.

Jesus. Count me among those who had no idea about his illness. That sucks, man. Hopefully history will be kind to him. Lately I've been watching a couple of those Sun City Girls DVD comps of skits, live stuff, etc, and have become totally convinced that he was a genius.

Great legacy of recordings. I know the Bishop bros. get most of the pr but I'm sure Gocher had a huge impact on that band.

Caroliner posted a tribute on the (un)official SCG Myspace site:

This was the plan if something happened. You know we took notes the whole time. UN City Girls take apart civilization with fine crafted Sumatran buttoned harpoons. Classic caskets and incense made of dried fish from Egypt "Set" on a styled photo claw of "Alloces" taking down the hundreds of hours put into the horror of moderne music as your gown ball rolls downhill at the pace of paree. Defanging the beasts of vapid merchandised brain death sounds from the quack-a-shoe box the jockum cloy of a charmadam should still come easy to theys bishops. You put the urn in a sock on a stage with a amplification contraption, then let the word stream, laughter steam, and ranger knot lessons flow again. You know he would've given the cold cook a run for his pincushion given the spotlight. Maybe YOU know something we don't, but I seriously doubt it.

If ye bully cockle the coin, then maybe a payment in cabbage and fly tickets maybe the answer to your wolf thickets of mourn. Grain pentacle delta venus sweet hair sheets, no black curtains, a deal then? Rest In Sitri's seraphistic pleasure hut always Charlie Selzumcyz-Deroite Goche, a Phoenix of myth-ink proportions to the ende.

"DANTE'S DISNEY INFERNO rules all!!!"

ha! so true. a couple years back i bought the nice vinyl reissue for my brother in law at christmas and we had a ball listening to it. so much fun.

I was at the show in Scott's picture. Never have I felt as much fear at a concert as when they (Alan, as I recall?) started driving golf balls into the audience, until I saw that they were hollow plastic. I think that says more about me than the terror of SCG live.

RIP.

No other band has had the impact and influence on my genetic structure
like SCG has. A great deal of that is wholly laid square on the
shoulders of Charles, the utter abandon with which he approached his
prolific life is a constant reminder of where I'd like to be, in my
head, and where I am not.

Devastating. All seems quite pointless now. I knew he'd been very ill - AB told me in December, but he also said he was totally in the clear at that point. In many ways he was the Sun City Girls, the inspiration, the true genius spark and the man who lived it like he talked it. He will be sorely missed and his writings and his music are only beginning to be understood by those who think they know. Without compare. Rest in peace, good sir.

eulogy from his dad (so I'm told)

"After he's passed through this form, the department will take his
body, remove the skeleton, and hollow out the bone marrow. They will
be used as instruments for a thirteen-piece orchestra. The eight bones
that comprised his arms and legs will have trumpet mouthpieces
attached to one end, and will be used as horns. The five remaining
bone sections -- the rib cage, the hip bone, the shoulder bone, the
back bone, and the skull -- will be used as the percussion
instruments, with the hands and the feet serving as the beaters. The
musicians will be instructed in the methods taken from his writings
pertaining to improvisational music. During the orchestra's
performance -- delivered annually on November 12, his birthday -- his
internal organs, preserved in a canopic jar sitting on the stage
front, will be guarded by a young Nepalese milkmaiden who, during the
course of each ceremony, will fall into an ecstatic possession trance,
and invoke his spirit in the same manner as he is invoking mine right
now. Listen to his song. Let me leave you with one last thought: If
his idea seems too preposterous, and if you don't believe in the
reincarnation of the soul, how do you know that we're not all dead
already? "
