...but without Paul Weller

pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

I've tried to think of a more ludicrous "group reforms but without key member" zing, but I think The Jam without Weller might be the most ridiculous comeback possible.

Not that I give a toss either way about the boring gits.

The Many Faces of Gordon Jump (Leon), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

NIN w/o Reznor would be a good laugh.

unfished business (Scourage), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Time for that Nirvana reunion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Public Image Unlimited!

David RER (Frank Fiore), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Okay that's a good one but I've always assumed NIN was a one-man band, so for this game they don't count.

It's Expected I'm Maud Gonne (Modal Fugue), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

You'd figure Grohl and Novoselic would be entertaining, tho. And PIL certainly had enough other good members to be worth watching.

It's Expected I'm Maud Gonne (Modal Fugue), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

You'd figure Grohl and Novoselic would be entertaining, tho.

Especially if they had no guitarist and just did all the songs Lightning Bolt style instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

That would be wunnerful, yes. I'm sure they'll play backup for Francis Bean sometime within the next 10 years anyway, god help us.

It's Expected I'm Maud Gonne (Modal Fugue), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

There's quite an obvious one but I'll leave it to Ned to say. Suffice to say that they may have written his favourite album...

unfished business (Scourage), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

I guess a big thing here is that Weller notoriously left The Jam cos the other pair were too lumpen. If they'd just decided to form a new band together there would be less of the tearjerking whiff of Creme Brulee about the whole thing.

It's Expected I'm Maud Gonne (Modal Fugue), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Rick Buckler has been touring with a jam tribute band anyway.

pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

?? lumpen? foxton had mad ennergettik bass parts, not boring rock plod at all!

just m@tt he1g3s0n (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

David Van Day's The Jam now, please.

White Collar Boxer (DomPassantino), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think ripping off "Taxman" makes you Bootsy Collins.

It's Expected I'm Maud Gonne (Modal Fugue), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

copying bootsy collins isn't the only way to not plod, either

just m@tt he1g3s0n (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

okay i'm listening to girl on the phone on my ipod right now...foxton is way motown actually.

just m@tt he1g3s0n (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

I'm being unnecessarily mean, I know. And Foxton (and Buckler) sounds fine within the context of that band, but I don't think either of them are very exciting and trying to launch a comeback with that name but without the main songwriter feels, at the least, dodgy to me.

It's Expected I'm Maud Gonne (Modal Fugue), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

oh dude the whole concept of this reunion is mad tarded! (don't get me wrong)....i just thought they were a pretty nice pop/rock band! good backing for weller.

when i think "lumpen" i guess i think of stuff like oasis's rhythm section, not the jam.

i guess this is sort of the UK equivalent of a replacements reunion w/o paul westerburg? (ha both Paul W's even!)

just m@tt he1g3s0n (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Lumpen's in the ear of the beholder, true. I think there were suggestions from several quarters when The Jam split up that Buckler, at least, wasn't up to playing in the style Weller wanted to go with. I like Style Council better anyway, but that's probably down to over-familiarity with The Jam's stuff as much as anything.

It's Expected I'm Maud Gonne (Modal Fugue), Monday, 19 February 2007 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

i should hear style council. i'm not even that huge of a jam fan anyway, but i love the greatest hits i have.

i dunno, you gotta admit foxton had more junk in his trunk than coldplay or travis!!!

just m@tt he1g3s0n (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

oh also i have setting sons, which is cool too.

just m@tt he1g3s0n (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

maybe foxton & buckler could hook up with merton mick

does it have something to do w/Weller recently performing Jam songs?

Perhaps someone could link to some other news articles which confirm this momentous ne...oh, wait.

ailsa_xx (ailsa_xx), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

"Speaking about the absence of Weller, drummer Rick Buckley said: "Paul Weller has a fantastic solo careers and is one of the UK's most talented songwriters. Paul is always welcome to join us for the reunions, but until then, we've got a new tour and a new album to do.""

Funny, I'm sure believe Mr. Buckler hasn't always been quite so warm and generous in his comments about Mr. Weller....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 19 February 2007 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

they should tour w/the new cars and rundgren can sing for both groups!

bliss (blass), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

There should be a law against reforming a band without their original frontman and creative brain.

Geir Hongro (geirhong), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

What about if it's just a brain? In a jar?

It's Expected I'm Maud Gonne (Modal Fugue), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

Actually I think Ray Manzarek tried that in the late 70s.

It's Expected I'm Maud Gonne (Modal Fugue), Monday, 19 February 2007 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

Especially if they had no guitarist and just did all the songs Lightning Bolt style instead.

The Watt/Hurley set at ATP a couple years back was just about that.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 19 February 2007 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

Of course, they could just get the weller vocal tracks off Polydor and tour with a cassette player upfront!

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

Paul is always welcome to join us for the reunions, but until then, we've got a new tour and a new album to do.

I like how they make "a new tour and a new album" sound like a pressing obligation despite the 20+ year interim.

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

it's at times like this i like to remember an old NME "thrills" article that called him "dick suckler". mind, even that's not as funny as the basic idea of these two knob-ends going on tour. fuck me ragged.

the only way this could possibly be half-interesting would be if they actually went out and JUST DID THE BASS AND DRUM PARTS and nobody played anything else. and that wouldn't be interesting so much as unusually stupid.

this is just wrong.

i'm taking it too seriously, amn't i?

grimly fiendish (simon), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

Think they'll do "Smithers-Jones"?

m1cc1o (m1cc1o), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 01:07 (nineteen years ago)

This will of course not be as disastrous as Queen without Freddie Mercury. But it is still a very, very, very bad idea.

Geir Hongro (geirhong), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

"Think they'll do "Smithers-Jones"?"

Shouldn't "Smithers-Jones" be considered a Stiff Little Fingers song rather than a Jam song by now?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

i think they're better off without that cunt weller.

temporary enrique (temporary enrique), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

They should do a "be Paul Weller" lottery for each song at each gig.

Apart from "Smithers-Jones" and "Don't tell them you're sane" that is.

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 09:29 (nineteen years ago)

"They should do a "be Paul Weller" lottery for each song at each gig."

Especially Paul Weller gigs.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

You been to one?

Everyone sings along like it's one big 'all together now'

M Grout (Mark Grout), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

"You been to one?"

Not while I still have my strength.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

"Rick Buckley"...I love it. Does this mean that Bruce "I'm A Freak" Foxton will be lending his sonorous baritone to exciting new interpretations of Tim and Jeff's legacy?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

Jake Burns should do the vocals

Soukesian (Soukesian), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

Presumably Tracie was unavailable.

Coming soon: The Still Council, with Mick Talbot and Someone Out Of Galliano.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

In view of the fact that Bruce Foxton's replacement in SLF is apparently Ali McMordie, I can't help but wonder whether Bruce he quit SLF in order to do this, or whether he's doing this because he was kicked out of SLF.

I wonder if Mr. Grout or Dr. C remember when Mr. McMordie was a member of Reading band Friction Groove with a bunch of former members of Between Pictures?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 20 February 2007 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

Heh, I even remember the advert for the bass vacany in that band:

"Bass player wanted, apply Martin Rushent Genetic Studios, reading (0734 xxxxxx)"

They got signed to Atlantic on the strength of the Ali McMordie connection. Irony: they wouldn't have signed SLF but they would because "ooh, famous bass player" sindrome.

(I won a copy of Timebomb at a "Carribean Club" local bands night (which was packed to the rafters, this was really big event! MB Hi-Power blew away all comers! And other more Reading nostalgia coming soon to a thread near you! a wopbaomaloobop.)
