I remember seeing them at some sort of weird Nike-or-somebody-sponsored 'Back to School' day festival at Cal State Northridge in 1994 or '95 with a bunch of other bands, and this guy was working himself into a frenzy heckling them as they played, screaming "this is date-rape music! There are real problems in the world! There are real problems in the woooooooorld!" while pulling on his hair. It was fucking hilarious. Classico.

I'm pretty sure I told this story in a RealIlm thread, but in 1996 I visited a friend who was PAing at the MTV Beach House for the summer, and went to the 'set' to see a bunch of bands: Everclear, Primus, Jewel, and No Doubt. We stood around in the Malibu sun all day while bands played and Jenny McCarthy taped intros. It was pretty fascinating and really fun.

For No Doubt (who started with a version of "Sailin' On" by Bad Brains that most people would likely have been appalled by, but I kind of liked), the MTV producer lady asked me to get on stage. They were recording "Spiderwebs" for their 2nd song with a big horns section. Right before they went into the song, the MTV lady shouted at me from off screen to take off my shirt. As a pale, profoundly self-conscious fattie, I was horrified. I said I couldn't. She was kind of frustrated and asked me again, and I mumbled that I couldn't for some reason. Everyone was staring at me, including people from the band. I asked if I should get off the stage, and she sighed 'No.' The band played the song as lots of super hot SoCal shirtless women and men danced around.

I watched it when it was on a week or so later, and sure enough, everyone's having the time of their lives and I am standing there, absolutely mortified, not moving for the duration of the song.
