Only a few tracks in, but the decline in her songwriting continues, even though Hal Willner's her best producer yet.

Maybe worst record of her career; worst certainly since the self-titled. When Willner's production isn't middle-of-the-road ambient-jazzy-gloss it's middle-of-the-road "alternative rock." So adventurous that Lu has caught up with 1989 but she forgot to take her songs along.

There was another thread either here or on ILX where many people criticized the cd (and sometimes her in general). Also on one of the Christgau threads, people discussed his giving this 4 stars in Rolling Stone and only offering mild criticisms.

I haven't heard it and am leaning towards not buying it (although maybe some sound samples will change my mind). I saw a Target tv ad for the cd that managed to cite some rave reviews for it. I was amased she was getting that kind of an advertising push.

Sad to say it's been downhill since Car Wheels.

I know it is popular to hate this album but I love it. I think it is much better than World Without Tears and marginally better than Essence.

It pained me to write my lengthy pan.

anyone know where one can get her version of "Gentle on My Mind"? I was counting on it being on this album >:(

Yeah, it's oh so iconoclastic to love this album. Just ask Rolling Stone, Billboard, Onion, AMG, Guardian, Entertainment Weekly, Amazon and Spin.

Sorry, I was referring to the new album, not her version of "Gentle on My Mind."
